Help with equipment choices (level 14 Barbarian)!

Advice

So, after several levels of not much time in-between adventures, my party has finally gotten some time to shop and trade instead of relying on what we find.

My character is a level 14 Invulnerable Rager Barbarian, and I have no idea what kind of equipment a level 14 character should have. I'm open to general overall suggestions involving trading in stuff I have, but what I have mainly is a +4 cloak of resistance (which probably needs to be upgraded if anything), a Belt of Physical Prowess Str/Dex +2, and a plot-relevant artifact weapon (2-Handed 1d12-when-medium B+P +2 Furious Invigorating Dragon-Bane Cold Iron Tree Trunk currently, though it has evolved before and probably will again). Also, the character is a Human Werebear through an unusual set of circumstances (changing is at-will, but takes a full round, and the DR/silver is only 5, so it's overridden by the invulnerable rager DR anyway). I also have a mithral breastplate I'm considering getting enchanted with some bonus and an ability or two (bolstering?)

I'm not sure exactly where we are on WBL and most of my party are inexperienced players (even more than me) with no shopping lists, so I don't know where I should be gear-wise; I don't want to be too selfish even though I have some ideas on where I should go with upgrading what I have and new stuff.

So I'm looking basically for as much advice as I can get, to decide between.

Offensive: composite longbow,if your allowed to enchant your weapon add speed (+1) (gives an extra attack) and impact (+2)will increase the 1d12 to 2d6 which increases your average base damage from 6.5 to 7. If you have something that makes you grow a size category you will be dealing 2d8 bringing your average base damage to 9 points.

Defensive: enchant your armor with spell resistance (gives ac to spells), cloak of resistance (boosts all saving throws, ring of evasion (chance of totally evading all damage from things that target reflex, exactly like rogues), ring of energy resistance (fire)

I thought 2d6 enlarged to 3d6? And actually previously my weapon had the power to make me enlarged somewhat similar to the Titan Mauler's Titanic Rage, but it lost that power relatively recently due to plot. It may get something like that later, though, we have a lead on a way to improve it and the other artifacts we got at the same time.

It is considered an artifact, so I can't enhance it myself, but I think Impact would be a really nice and on-flavor enhancement to hope for in the future (Especially since I keep forgetting about Invigorating, and we fight a lot of nonliving things anyway). Speed is obviously awesome but it's slightly less on-flavor for a giant tree trunk.

I'm concerned about spell resistance making it harder to be healed, especially since our party healer is a heavens oracle (and my Cohort, so two levels lower) rather than a cleric.

I am definitely considering the evasion ring, though.

the 2d6-> 2d8 was from the monk's damage table, I think your right though. you can drop the SR as a standard action but in the long run it will give you more actions because you won't be put out of a fight by save or suck spells as much, don't get it if you don't want it since cloak of resistance will help against most spells.

Oh, and I'm set for a ranged weapon, though I rarely have to use it. We found an artifact composite longbow early on that has the power to add enhancements to arrows fired from it in exchange for HP damage, and the party gave it to me because I had the best strength bonus and the most HP. (unlike the plot artifacts all the characters in the party got, that one is just one that the GM and a friend of his made up and thought was cool)

+4 Furious Courageous Great Sword? or a large +4 Furious Courageous Bastard Sword? Sure It's like a -2 to wield, but your rage bonuses completely negate that.

I'm not really looking for advice on weapons, mostly armor and supporting equipment.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Weapons: since your a barbarian, your going to have a huge static damage bonus. As such, I like to embrace that through crits. Keen falchion, or improved critical. For starters.

Make it, +5 adamantine falchion with Furious, courageous, dueling (from field guide, only if you spell sunder) holy , and impervious to make it tougher to break
If not holy than impact and one other ability

As for other items:
Headband of havoc: a barbarian must- immediate action rage, and +4 lvl to one power
Boots of speed, striding and springing, feather step boots( ignore hindering terrain)
Pauldrons of the juggernaut- these are amazing for barbarians
Gloves of reconnaissance/ gloves of stone shaping- move earth around like clay
Light fortification on armor- 25% miss chance for crits
Fortification stone put on your weapon
Cap of the free thinker- to help out will saves
Jingasa of the fortunate soldier- reduce a crit hit or sneak attack and help out your AC.
Quick runners shirt- get close than full attack. Even helps with pounce barbarians.

Typical primary magic items to consider and/or pick up:
Magic weapon (check!)
Magic armor (you seem to lack magic armor at level 14?)
Ring of protection
Cloak of resistance (check!)
Amulet of natural armor (may not be a strong consideration for you)
Belt of strength and constitution (you have one but if you can get a stronger one all the better, maybe focus just on strength).

Lvl 14 PC's have an expected WBL of 185k worth of equipment (generally split 25% weapons, 25% protection, 25% other items and 25% on disposable or mundane gear).

That's roughly 45k for weapons, 45k for armor/protection, 45k for other magic, etc.

You could have a breastplate +5 (25,200) and a ring of protection +3 (18,000) for example. I think cloak of resistance falls under other magic items, as would the belt. Your belt of physical might +2 (10k) and your cloak of resistance +4 (16k) leave with a little bit to play with (20k).

Your weapon is over 72k value so your DM may not want you to have equal amounts of other magic, but that's between you. Good luck!

Our GM likes to roll treasure randomly, and we had a crafting party member but they died like five levels ago and that player didn't feel like making a new character who could do the same, so basically we have had a serious lack of items of choice, especially recently. Like I said, this is the first shopping downtime in a while.

Um...a few items to consider:

Wayfinder with Clear Spindle Ioun Stone for the resonance property of immunity to charm/enchantment as if continual Protection from Evil.
Luckstone.
Ring of Evasion.
Ring of Freedom of Movement.

And I've always been fond of Celestial Armor myself (fly 1/day, +3 chainmail that's light and only has -2 ACP) but you are already high on the wealth scale. :)

hmm, are Juggernaut's Pauldrons worth it over a cloak of resistance? even if you could get a GM to agree to a combination of the two, that would be a lot of gold (77,500 for +5, I think?)

Over a cloak of resistance? Most likely not. Your better off with a cloak of resistance. The pauldrons just allow a few enlarge persons, increasing DR and an increasing attack.
