Ancient White Dragon "blizzard" ability clarification...

Rules Questions

The information listed under the Ancient white dragon entry is causing me (and my fellow players) some confusion. It says that the dragon can, as a supernatural ability, "use its breath weapon to create a blizzard in the area around it as a standard action. This creates heavy snow conditions in a 50-foot radius for 1 minute, centered on the dragon. This snow slows movement (4 squares of movement per square entered) and limits vision as fog does."

The confusion stems from the use of the phrase "create a blizzard". The entry mentions the production of a heavy snow condition which slows movement and limits vision. According to the core rulebook, the environmental term "blizzard" does more than what is listed in this entry, so it was debated whether this blizzard ability creates a "blizzard" or just the heavy snow condition that is described in the entry.

This was particularly important because we had characters that were flying which would have been affected by the wind speeds and other checks produced by a blizzard environmental condition.

Thanks for the help!

The ability does what it says it does; it doesn't invoke the actual weather effect 'blizzard'. That's just descriptive text.

Sovereign Court

It actually does create a blizzard it even says so in the description, yeah its a very strong wind, it creates snow, it limits vision as well but doesn't matter for the white dragon since he can see through the fog/snow and attack his opponents, raining down spells, cold breath etc...

Hey ImaLaronis,

Small hint, usually first sentence (or in this case part of sentence) in description of ability is flavor text. In your case tho, some pondering would suggest that dragon cannot create windy conditions with breath weapon or at very least it would seem less likely. The snow still restricts vision and sight tho and functions more as a debilitating fog then actual blizzard. If it was a real blizzard, it would not be stationary also.

Hope this helps,

Malag

Pathfinder Adventure Path #46: Wake of the Watcher mentions Gnoph-Keh, which mentions the Wind Speeds are clockwise (circular) and at the same speed as a normal blizzard windstorm speed.

If this is the same type of Blizzard, of course...

Sorry if this is thread necromancy but I was having a look for the "restricts visibility as fog does" explanations.

White dragons can see through fog?

White dragons can see through fog?

"Snow Vision (Ex) A very young white dragon learns to see perfectly well in snowy conditions. A white dragon does not suffer any penalties to Perception checks while in snow."
