Starz' Black Sails officially premieres next Saturday, January 25th, but the first episode is already online on the Starz website.
Here's a trailer/preview if you don't want to watch the whole first episode.
It is written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island and has already been renewed for a second season.
One note of "caution," though: There's nudity and sex scenes. ;-)

Might be some good inspiration for anyone playing in or running Skull & Shackles.

I caught the first episode. Good stuff. Definitely will be worth mining for S&S ideas (or Razor Coast, for that matter).

I liked that there are lesbians.

Silver Crusade

I saw the first episode and I really enjoyed it! I think it will be a series worth watching!

Watched it last night. Its good but at the same time it feels fake. For a pirate show i expected to feel the atmosphere like i did for shows like Boardwalk, Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, etc but its not there yet. For pirates the tavern seemed to clean and even friendly compared to say the tavern in Hell on wheels. Hopefully it gets better as the show goes along. The lesbian thing seemed forced and would have been a better fit for another character.

You had me at.

It is written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island.

I dont have starz though so ill either have to buy it on dvd or download it or somthing later.

spoiler:
Man did the Walrus and the Ranger get their ass shredded or what?

Spoiler:

I'm thinking with that last episodes end, they are going to end up taking one of the Man at Wars (I believe that's what those ship are?).

The crashed ship was the Urca the anchored ship I beleive was the man o' war. So your theory might be correct about them taking the ship. They might just take the loot though and bury it on the island and then steal a skiff. X marks the spot and treasure island and all.

But what an epic final 10-15 mins!

Silver Crusade

Remember this is a prequel to Treasure Island. So, take that for what it is.

Shadowborn's weird conspiracy theory:

Spoiler:
John Silver is quite accurate in his assessment of Randall. The guy is crazy like a fox. At some point in the future he'll do away with Silver and assume his identity. He is, after all, the one-legged ship's cook aboard the Walrus, not Silver.

That would be cool. That character is probably the person I want dead most on the crew. He's so far been too slippery to die, but eventually his gift of gab has to fail...

Not me I love an opportunist!

Sovereign Court

So anybody else watching season 2? Episode 2 was great!

I didn't know it was back on yet.

Is it on Hulu?

Sovereign Court

Returned on 1-24 on Starz. I don't have Hulu.

2nd episode was more dramatic, but not as fun as the first... They did build up some interesting conflicts, though.

I wish there were a couple more action scenes, though... Or that the ones that the episode did have were went a bit longer. There is bit too much exposition in this series.

Sovereign Court

You know Lem, I was thinking at the time of your post that the exposition is the heart and soul of the show. I still believe that now, but you have a point about long droughts of action on this show. After just catching the season finale though I am glad I stuck it out. My advice for folks is to let episodes pile up vs. watching it week to week like I do.

Yeah, I just picked up this show with this season. So far, I've been very happy with it. The mixture of fictional and historical characters has been really cool, and the interpretation of events leading up to Treasure Island has been very interesting.

And that season finale was brutally awesome.

This show is just amazing.

Makes me want to endure Skull and Shackles!

Yes, the Season 2 finale was six kinds of awesome. Maybe seven, it was hard to keep up.

Scarab Sages

I like to think of it as ten tons of awesomesauce in a one ton bag.

Sovereign Court

Was great but,

spoiler:
I was sort of disappointed they didnt actually show the Walrus crew meeting up with Rackhem's crew. I think that interaction would have been interesting as well as fighting the Spanish soldiers. They pretty much handwaved all that though in the finale.

Spoiler:
They didn't meet. The Walrus was left behind when they took the man-of-war. The Walrus crew was with Flint in Charleston.

Sovereign Court

spoiler:
so the original walrus was not destroyed/sunk? Are you sure they didn't rename the Spanish man-o-war "walrus"?

Ah I watched it again and I see now. Not so disappointing then.

Spoiler:
That's what Rackham was saying. They found the Walrus and repaired her because they needed the extra cargo space to haul back all the gold. There's no way Jack would have survived an encounter with Flint after he was told that the gold being gone was a lie. He had that "I'm going to tear someone apart with my bare hands" crazy look in his eye again.

Sovereign Court

Seen it, not impressed enough to keep watching, plus, pirates kinda bored me.

Good news! You can go watch Vikings instead! :)

Sovereign Court

or agents of shield... lawlz

@shadowborn:
Im curious if the walrus was repairable why the Spanish didnt fix it and send for help. Seems like they were on that island forever.

Sovereign Court

Don't like vikings either (except for that blonde). AoS I watch.

You seem to watch a lot of stuff you don't like :p

Sovereign Court

Well, I have to try something in order to know whether I like it or not.

Spoiler:
Not entirely sure, unless they just didn't know where it was, didn't have the tools and materials necessary to affect repairs (which Rackham's ship would have carried,) or just didn't have the manpower due to the disease that hit them, or some combination of those.

All very true. It makes sense when you think about it. I guess its a rare situation for me where I wanted to see how it happened instead of imagine.

The end is here in first explosive trailer for final season of Black Sails

Sovereign Court

Hell yeah!

Sovereign Court

Just finished the series. I think 4 years was the perfect amount of time for this show. The final season wraps up lose ends nicely and aligns with Treasure Island. I wont think of T.I. the same way again. Was hoping for a little more action this final season. Though the exposition of Black Sails is still some of the best to offer out there.

Scarab Sages

Finally watched the finale last night. Not bad. I think they only problem I've ever had with the show was the amount of treasure left on the island. It's been a long time since I read Treasure Island, but I thought for sure there was more than one chest.

Still, overall, I think it was well written and acted. I'd even love to see them wait a few years, then maybe do a treatment of Treasure Island itself, with the same actors playing Billy Bones, John Silver, and Israel Hands.
