The schedule says that voting begins when the submission deadline has been met.
will there be a conversion period between submission and voting? or will we really be able to vote at 5:01pm tomorrow?

This is that portion of the contest where I don't like anything I've been working on and want to submit nothing. Ha.
Don't worry, I will. It's just a well-known phase.
I appreciate we're looking at a shorter voting period but Round 2 is going to come on fast for the top 32... hopefully we'll get twist info sooner.

15 hours? By my calculations there is still 29 hours before the submission deadline and I'm posting this almost ten hours after your post. I'm not saying you should wait to the last minute to submit, but I think you're off a day. Submission deadline doesn't end and and voting doesn't begin until the first day of 2014 at 2pm US Pacific time. Washington state is still in 2013.
Don't panic, all you late submitters! And Happy New Year!

Now comes the hardest part of the competition: fretting about my submitted item for approximately an eternity.
Somehow this year I'm surprisingly calm. I was a wreck until I hit submit but then it was out of my hands and I calmed considerably. Even though a small blemish was pointed out after I hit submit I'm really happy.
I'm proud of what I've designed over the last couple of years especially this entry. Maybe I make the top 32 maybe I don't but I like the designer I'm becoming. This contest has opened doors and help me have conversations with successful designers I never would have imagined I could have. I've made new friends in the community and I've been inspired to follow a dream I've had for 20 years.
I know from experience that if I make the top 32 I won't be calm. I'll worry at every round but for now I'm relaxed and looking forward to seeing what everyone else has brought to the competition.
Man, that month flew by. What a difference commuting to work makes.
I should... start making my item. :p

AAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I just submitted!
Now I think I need to fire up Fallout: New Vegas and kill some legionaries to take the edge off.
Twenty seven or so hours before we can start voting. I'm hoping to get a nice confidence boost from that. Filigree and walkie talkies and SAICs to start the new year! I'm also hoping for some formatting mistakes, obvious ripoffs, gross out items, humor items, and rubbish writing.
I'll have the copy paste sidebar ready to go for the good stuff too. nothing like a holiday grab bag of actually useful items to throw my party as treasure! Superstar is a free equipment companion if nothing else...

What is the point of staying up for NYE if I can't vote until tomorrow evening. I guess I'll go to bed and rest up for the marathon voting sessions to come!

And for the love of all that's good in this world, don't wait until the last minute to submit! If something goes wrong with the website and your submission doesn't go in, then that's it. No do-overs. Better luck next year.

It's weird not being anxious for the contest this year... But I have completely different deadline anxieties!

As for Scorba's question, as far as I know, the voting period opens immediately after the submission period closes.

Actually, you should have read the contest rules before you submitted anything. Seriously.
I submitted last night just after midnight. I had four items I was contemplating submitting and had decided on one that I had been tweaking recently. When I got it in the submission box, I realized another problem with it and decided that it would take time to fix (or at least look for a precedent item) and went with my second choice. My second choice item was only such by the narrowest margin. I figure both had about the same amount of chance to break into the top 32. I don't expect to vote as much as I did last year as I took advantage of holiday time off then, and as of today, that time is over. Whether I break the top 32 this year or not, I'm not going to stress about it. I've had a pretty good attitude about it after failing the first 4 years. Each rejection was easier to take than the last. It might be a little harder this year with the fact that I made the top 32 last year, but I hope I haven't got my expectations up too high. It took me only an evening to get over my failure in the archetype round last year and there is no such round this year (though I feel like I learned what I did wrong there).
Good luck to all those who entered, especially those who have done so for the first time. Looking forward to seeing some good items this year.

Good luck to everyone entering, especially those who are having a crack for the first time. As for fretting about your item - I've found god mode on Skyrim to be remarkably therapeutic.

Ebil submitted an item and is in the contest. The fact remains that reading the rules before submitting would make someone aware that entrants may submit one and only one item. Not knowing the rules beforehand increases the chances of being disqualified for stupid things.
I'm not lacking empathy, and I'm not making light of Ebil's mistake or trying to make anyone feel bad. I'm giving an important piece of advice. I'm pointing out something that people do year after year: making mistakes based on ignorance of the rules.
I made it so far last year on my first try, so this year could end up being a disappointment for me. Now I'm shifting between nervous and somewhat confident. I wouldn't mind getting another crack at the monster round. :)

So I generated a couple dozen concepts, which were mostly names and a few sentences of the idea. I fleshed out 4 of those. 1 of those 4 is my final choice.
I'm sure I picked my best idea (for this contest). I'm completely undecided about how good it is. I worry about my mechanics.

I had a similar dilemma this year. I spent the majority of my time fussing over my original design, but it had a fairly complex mechanic and felt forced.
On a whim, I abandoned it in favor of a much simpler item - one that I feel is designed more coherently and packs a bit more mojo. I'm confident that this was the right decision for me and hopefully yours was as well.

BtW, I remember reading somewhere that they change the setup so that you wouldn't get repeats until you went through every item?

You know the first time you see your item in the voting, it's guaranteed you'll notice that typo you missed. :-)

Well, I'm submitted, for the first time. I wasn't planning on entering, but then I had a flash of inspiration last night...
I'm still fretting about my pricing, but I keep telling myself that it's not off enough to be ding-worthy...
Good job, Bobson; congrats. My impression is pricing's one of the last thing people look at in terms of what they factor into the votes. Unless you're WAY off, most people aren't going to quibble too much.

Has everybody done their stretches? It is very easy to cramp up over the keyboard if you haven't.
