can a faerie dragon familiar use a magical staff

just seeking clarification on whether the faerie dragon familiar can cast spells from a magic staff. I saw some posts mentioning giving the faerie dragon a minor arcana staff and was wondering if that is PFS legal.

thanks

It literally has spellcasting ability and can definitively use a wand (which is also a spell trigger item), so I don't see how it couldn't use another spell trigger item like a staff.

The thing I would want to look at is the weight of the staff vs. the dragon's encumbrance.

Absolutely--carrying such a think might ground the poor dragon without liberal use of ant haul, but if it can hold it, it can make use of it.

Just strap the staff-wielding familiar to your forearm and do your best Mega Man/Samus Aran impression.

encumbrance wouldn't be an issue courtesy of the ant haul spell...and ironically the faerie dragon has a great str score than my wizard :)

Remember that endurance is factored by size. At a size of Tiny, I believe the carrying capacity is quarter than it would be for a medium creature of the same score.

BTW, if you're one of those STR 5 wizards, expect endurance auditing at my tables.

Do you mean encumbrance?

The auditing will continue until the mistake is found! No matter how long it takes!

Carrying capacity of a tiny creature its one half of a medium creature. So a 13 str will be 25/50/75 for weight loads.

Isn't there a really annoying PFS ruling that familiars can not activate magic items

The only exception being ion stones, and wands if your are on a short list.

Yes, unless you're one of a pawful of familiars... like a farie dragon.

Otherwise you're limited to the more restrictive of the animal archive chart, neck, and barding. (which usually means neck and barding)

Sorry LazarX, I know typos can happen to anyone (half the time it's the dumb auto-correct), but... That was just funny, BNW :)

My Witch achieved such a Familiar, and after learning exactly this on these forums, provided him with such a staff. What's better than a powerful Elven Time-Witch with the Evil Eye, his very own copy of The Pnakotic Manuscripts, and a magical jar of eyeballs that protect him from gaze attacks and flanking? A powerful Elven Time-Witch with all that and a sentient, shoulder-mounted plasma cannon, naturally!

Anyways, a Staff of Minor Arcana weighs 5 lbs - even with the weight capacity of a Tiny creature, a Faerie Dragon can carry that comfortably. Consider also that not all magical staves need be the equivalent of Gandalf's "walking stick" - the Staff of Minor Arcana in particular seems like it could just as soon be comparable to a marching-band baton or something - a "bastard wand," if you will. If you do this (and no edict says you must), be sure to also buy your Faerie Dragon a Page of Spell Knowledge with either shield or magic missile on it if you don't or can't know those spells yourself, so your familiar can recharge the staff.

Heh, now I picture this.

"So the faerie dragon is resting on the staff of the archmage?"

Horrified player: "He's not resting, he's using it!"
