Ok, ghostbane dirge gives a Will save to make the creature susceptible to corporeal sources. But incorporeals already have a 50% chance to ignore effects from non-damaging corporeal sources. So, when casting ghostbane dirge, does the ghost first get to roll a 50/50 to even be affected, then get a Will save against the spell?

RAW, yes. RAI, since the spell specifically targets incorporeal creatures, I would guess no.

Sczarni

Most people recognize the intention of the spell to work fully against incorporeal targets, but as blahpers said the RAW would still require a 50% "miss chance".

Dark Archive

Sorry about the necro, but has this ever been answered?

Scarab Sages

Gostbane's threats are hard to kill, they endlessly revive... But Is there an official answer about that?
Do Incorporeals creatures get 50% chances only to be affect by Gosthbane dirge?

Sorry for the Necro, but i believes it's better to revevie than to start a new threat.

yup, 50% chance to work, have to over come SR if they have it, and then they get to make a save using their good saving throw to resist it.

It's only maybe going to work from a casting pumped cleric. Otherwise it's very VERY unreliable.

Ghostbane Dirge is a waste of a spell slot.

(in a home game, we gave it the Force descriptor... so it at least ignores the 50% part)

Scarab Sages

As a spell specifically design for incorporeal, It's effectivly a waste if only 50% + will save.

Yes, I also read Ghostbane Dirge as did Chess Pwn. 50% failure rate; SR applies; Will save must be failed. If you know you are fighting incorporeals, you could memorize and cast Ghostbane Dirge on the enemy multiple times. It doesn't come up often enough for our spontaneous casters to select it as a spell known, particularly in light of the 50% miss, SR, and Will save.

Use the ectoplasmic feat to negate the incorporeal miss chance.
