Pronunciation Guide

Rise of the Runelords

Currently, I'm reading the entire Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition to prepare for my next campaign after Kingmaker.

I'm an actor,
I'm dyslexic,
I have other learning disabilities,
I know a little Spanish,
I know a little French,
(Just enough in each to get me into trouble)
and this leads me to mispronounce most of the extraordinary words used in Rise of the Runelords.

While my players are certainly very forgiving of my flaws, I would still rather pronounce things closer to the ballpark then I have been. Kingmaker has been *ahem* challenging.

I'm going to use this thread to ask ALL THE QUESTIONS about pronouncing things for this book and to post my findings.

No hard feeling if people like pronouncing things their own way. That's cool too, but I'm trying to get the closest pronunciation intended.

Okay, first one.

How do you pronounce Karzoug's name? Car-ZOOG or Car-ZOWG?
The first one.

I think it's 'car' like the thing you drive.

And 'ZOOG' like 'log' with a 'Z'.

or is it like 'zoo' with a 'g' at the end?

The latter. 'Zoo' with a 'g'.

It's however YOU want to pronounce them. You can change the names if you want. Honestly. Adapt things to fit your campaign. You don't need for it to be 100% identical to what Paizo put out and with precise pronunciations (I mean, you're not speaking Elvish in a Peter Jackson film!) - all you need is for your players to enjoy your game.

Exactly! I WANT to pronounce them as close as I can to how they were intended to be pronounced!

I don't need to be 100% perfect, but I WANT to be very close. That's the point of this thread.

Golarion: go-LAIR-ee-un

Karzoug: kar-ZOOG

what other names are you wondering about?

Well, I just discovered that the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting has a pronunciation guide.

So a big chunk of my work is done.

But the names

Oh, the peoples names. I wonder about all of them.

This one took me a while: Shalelu is pronounced Sha-LEE-loo.

Silver Crusade

I hadn't even considered that possible pronunciation. I keep going back and forth between Sha-leh-loo and Sha-lay-loo. Making the middle syllable a hard "e" never even occurred to me.

That is why she is known as Sheyla in my game. Easier to get my mouth around.

I was going for Sha-leh-loo for a while but had a terrible time with it. Sha-LEE-loo flows much better for me, even though it doesn't seem right linguistically.

And the web ate an edit with some more names. I'll add them later.

I freaking changed most of the names in my campaign because they just didn't sound right or roll off the tongue. Probably why I failed so hard in French classes.

Erylium became E-leer-ium
Shalelu became Shay-loo
Amieko Kaijitsu became Am-ee-ko Kai-jute-soo

Now for some reason I'm envisioning the elvish archer going around while holding a card while saying "Multipass."

I have been fracking up and tripping over my metaphorical tongue every time I try and say her name. (It doesn't help I keep thinking there's a "y" in their because of the similarity to Shayliss (Vinder)).

I was trying Shal- EL -OO todya, but Sha-LEE-loo is so much better and rolls of the metaphorical tongue easier I'm going to adopt that one!

I'm supposing that some of the names are suppose to be pronounced as if they are Japanese.

a as in fAther
i as in meatY
u as in fOOd
e as in Egg
o as in Old

Tsu sounds kind of like TSUnami

AMEIKO = AM-E-I-KO
LONJIKU = LON-JI-KU or LO-N-JI-KU
TSUTO = TSU-TO
KAIJITSU = KA-I-JI-TSU

Ronjiku?

I heart this post so much!!! All the actors I know seem like they are really struggling with some kind of impediment...

Edit: found it:

Quote:
We pronounce it to rhyme with "pie dough."

I have attempted to pronounce the Szcarni as SHAR-nee. Additionally I thought Varisia was pronounced Var-ihs-ee-uh, but I heard someone say it as VAR-ee-zhah (like asia). Which might it be?

Your pronunciation of Varisia is correct.

Sczarni is a tougher one. I've been saying "szarni", but I think the official pronunciation I heard from James Jacobs is "Scar-nee"
