Arcane Domain Spells

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

I looked and looked and nowhere did it say that a Cleric can cast an arcane domain spell as a divine spell. I think I saw an FAQ that said that if the spell is granted by a divine class it becomes a divine spell but I can't find that FAQ. I want to be ready in case somebody tells me that I have to account for arcane spell failure chance.
Thank you.

The spell does not define it's type, the class does.

Spells come in two types: arcane (cast by bards, sorcerers, and wizards) and divine (cast by clerics, druids, and experienced paladins and rangers).

Similar statements can be found on pages 218, 220, and in each classes Class Features - Spells section.

Thus, Cure Light Wounds is a Divine spell when a cleric casts it or an Arcane spell when a Bard casts it.

A Fireball cast by a Cleric is a divine spell.

What Gauss said.

The FAQ you are thinking of is about spell-like abilities.

Thanks. Do I need to present a focus item of my Deity to cast divine spells as a cleric? (last question)

Yup. The focus item is necessary to cast spells as a cleric.

So do I have to hold it with one hand and have the other hand free? Or can I hold it with one hand and have a shield in the other?

Spend 100gp and get a holy symbol tattoo, then you don't have to worry about handling it.

The thing is, if I am wearing full plate my hand would be covered by the armor, so IDK...

It doesn't have to be on your hand.

Put it on your neck, your cheek, or your forehead.

Tattoo your tongue, but then all your spells would have to be silent O:-)

well, you can always have the shield bearing the divine focus. You only need to be able to have it clearly visible. A tattooed holy symbol [100gp,Ultimate Equipment p66] can be stamped on your forehead and still count - SKR quote .

I thought that full plate covers the whole body, has a helm and everything, like those knights that all you see is armor. : )

If I can put it on my shield that would be best. Also, I don't mind having to hold it in one hand, cause I will not be using a weapon, but do I need to have a free hand and hold it with the other hand or just a free hand with the symbol in it?

Vincent The Dark,

The rules only require that you have a hand free for Somatic Components. They are silent on how many hands are required for Material and (Divine) Focus components.

You could reasonably assume that the same hand performing the Somatic component is also dealing with the Material and Focus components.

Perhaps that is on the permissive side of things but it would be the only way combat spellcasters (such as clerics) that are expected to have a shield on the other arm could reasonably be expected to perform spells.

Holding the symbol with one hand and using an weapon/shield in the other is totally fine. As for the armor, I guess it depends on how the gm views it, but a tattoo in the forehead should work already.

Edit: Someone took levels in the ninja class...

Well, the tattoo still makes a great backup in case your gear is ever out-of-pocket.

Ultimate Magic has "Create Reliquary Arms and Armor," which allows you to incorporate a divine focus into a new-made magic item.

Adventurer's Armory gives us the Channel Foci, which include Consecrated Weapons (+150gp), and Sanctified Shields (+100gp). Channel Foci function as a divine focus and often have another small kicker effect.

My tattooed sorcerer has his Azathoth tattoo right around his eye, for use with his False Focus feat. He also has a few extras on other body parts, and carries a selection of iron and wood foci of various faiths, just so folks don't pay too much attention to his face tattoo.

Extra holy symbols are good to have on hand, in any case, as they can be sundered, disarmed, and stolen. Nothing ruins a caster's day faster than being deprived of their primary casting tool.

You either lift the visor or wear an open face helm. Either way it works fine without needing a free hand.

I'm with Gauss. The same hand that does the Somatic component is also manipulating material/divine focus.

I'm a fan of false focus and tattooed holy symbol. It takes care of material/focus and you can't lose it easily. To avoid having to multiclass, a SLA can fill in for the need to cast arcane spells.
