Gendarmes & bonus feats

Rules Questions

It kinda bugs me, but in the "gendarmes" archetype, they dont specify wether or not you need the prerequisites for those feats. Usually (as in the case of monk/ranger) they specify wether or not you do, but not here. Is there any ruling on the question?

Since there is no specific override, bonus feats default to requiring prerequisites. No ruling necessary.

If "Bonus Feat" inherently means "Ignore prerequisites", then a 1. level Fighter can take Stunning Critical. For added absurdity, he can take Weapon Specialization (prerequisite: 4th level Fighter).

I just wasnt sure, they usually specify in BOTH cases (including fighter), so I just wanted to be sure. It's the only case I've seen where its not.

It replaces/updates the standard bonus feats selection the cavalier gets, which do specify the cavalier must meet the prereqs. So I'd say it's pretty certain you do require prereqs.

Neither the 2. printing core book or the SRD mentions prerequisites for Fighters.

"Bonus Feats ignore prerequisites" is, IIRC, a 3.5 thing, where "Bonus Feat" was a universal monster rule. I haven't actually seen support for it in PF.

However it replaces that ability, it doesn't augment it. Replacing something completely removes the wording from the original unless specificially stated. Unlike the original, this wording doesn't specifically state either or.

This has been discussed for a couple years now and I still haven't seen any official ruling or errata on this yet. Can we get some feedback from Paizo on how to rule this?

I recommend replacing Improved Bullrush and Spring Attack with Improved Overrun and Charge Through.

Both feats seem a lot more fitting for the Gendarme Archetype "Mounted Terror".

Shadow Lodge

The default requirement for a feat is that you must meet the prerequisites. If the ability doesn't say otherwise, then why would you think it might mean otherwise?

This is basic mechanics.

I think it has to do with there being a set list similiar to the monk. Then on top of that. Then you would loose a feat assuming you didnt take dodge, with spring attack.

Neither are fitting, actually, because a mounted Gendarme isn't the one making the Overrun maneuver. His mount is.

They are fitting feats for a mount, in other words. Or a Gendarme who hops off his horse and tries to trample people, I guess.

Shame you can't ride a mount smaller than you. Imagine a Shaonti jumping off of a riding dog then trampling people.

Something that always bugged me about the Gendarme:

It has language stating that if you already have all the feats in the list that you can start taking regular combat feats in place of them. What if you took all the feats you QUALIFY for but don't have the ones you can't? Most of those feats have pre-requisites, and the only tree you're forced down is Power Attack -> Improved Bull Rush.
