How would you build a Wayang Rogue? At first I was thinking spring attack and vital strike with the scout archetype, but the BAB progression is prohibitive. Then I thought maybe Alchemist/Barbarian/Rogue. What are your thoughts?

Spring Attack and Vital Strike don't work together. Sneak Attack and Vital Strike don't synergize well.

but the scout's skirmisher ability works with spring attack

i'd take a half orc with a Falchion or a half elf with a fuachard via alternate racial

invest in a decent strength

take power attack

move 10 feet forward and 10 feet back, as a minimum, 15 if possible

if you are a half orc:

take the skilled and acute darkvision alternate racials

skilled replaces darkvision to give an extra skill point

take acute darkvision, which replaces ferocity with darkvision 90, effectively trading ferocity for both an additional skill point per level, and an extra 30 feet of darkvision

pick up a falchion

if you are a half elf:

take the ancestral arms alternate trait, replacing skill focus with proficiency in the fauchard

take the drow blooded alternate racial assuming it's allowed

If you are an elf:

take the darkvision and silent hunter alternate traits

focus on archery

take shot on the run

combine skirmisher with ranged sneak attacks on the run using a composite longbow alongside deadly aim

take a melee weapon like a cestus for low levels

Thanks for the quick pointers and ideas!
Two things to remember: (1) The Race is Wayang and (2) The primary class is Rogue

and i mentioned racial proficiencies for strength rogues, a Dex rogue doesn't work too well with spring attack, till you get dervish dance or an agile weapon. and this is an 8th level ability that will be rather late in your career, i wouldn't recommend building around it.

i was mentioning alternatives

Wayangs do lousy damage, not as lousy as halflings, but they lack a strength bonus, and dexterity will never match the benefit of strength based 2handing.

I agree, Dex-based damage will never exceed Strength based damage. That doesn't change the restrictions. :)

I'm looking for new ideas on how to get the most out of a one-strike wayang rogue. I didn't get much out of vitality strike on its own (the BAB limitations make it too restrictive) and spring attack has its own flaws. Those were my first two ideas. Dipping Barbarian for extra movement and rage, and then Alchemist for mutagen (and enlarge) to get +8 strength from buffs seemed pretty good, but I was hoping for some alternatives or fine tuning adjustments.

Offensive Defense.

Fun:]

If you do not mind losing trapfinding the best combo in my opinon is Scout + Thug archtype.

1. Power Attack + Furious Focus
2. Cornugon Smash (to demoralize as a free action on a hit)
3. A Weapon with high base damage greate axe/greatsword
4. Some equipment to boost the damage Rhino Hide (2d6 on a charge), Belt of thunderous charging (Weapon on size larger on a charge attack), Baldric, Bane ...
5. Some ways to increase Intimidate checks Intimidating Prowess,Skill Focus (Intimidate)

That all adds up to some nice damage and free debuffs on each charge/sneak attack: I. You can sicken on a hit (-1d6 sneak, no save), II. You can demoralize as a free action giving you a chance to render you opponent shaken or frightened.

S: 13 D: 18 C: 12 I: 14 W: 10 Ch: 11 (20 pt wayang)

Level 1: Bard 1 - Dawnflower Dervish
Level 2: Rogue 1
Level 3: Rogue 2
Level 4: Barbarian 1 - DEX rage archetype
Level 5: Rogue 3
Level 6: Rogue 4
Level 7: Alchemist 1 - DEX mutagen
Level 8: Rogue 5
Level 9: Rogue 6
...

Feats:
- Dervish Dance (Bard 1)
- Dodge (1st)
- Arcane Strike(3rd)
- Mobility (5th)
- Spring Attack (Rogue 4 - Combat Talent)
- Power Attack(7th)

Level 1: +5 to hit for 1d4+4 damage
Level 3: +6 to hit for 1d4+5 damage + 1d6 sneak attack
Level 5: +10 to hit for 1d4+8 damage + 2d6 sneak attack
Level 7: +10 to hit for 1d4+12 damage + 3d6 sneak attack + spring attack

This is not counting item upgrades of your scimitar and DEX belt.

You'll be a super sneak and have a really good AC. You won't hit as hard as a strength build, but you'll have some fairly nice utilities available.

Well. I always wanted to play one of the 2 :
2 level dip as Viking , than scout/thug
At level 8 you have shatter defence and can always sneak:
You charge you get sneak
Opponent reach you - you move action to intimidate than sneak
All weapons, medium armors .

What about Improved Feint so you don't have to wait until you get Spring Attack to consistently get sneak attacks without a flank? That will let you use Vital Strike (though Vital Strike on a small character isn't particularly useful.) Dip a level or two into fighter for the bonus feats and weapon proficiencies.

That's an idea I've been tinkering with a little bit lately. The downside is that the dip puts off your sneak attack progression, but the two feat requirement for Improved Feint takes up time as well. And a martial two handed weapon probably much better than a long spear.
