I'm playing a spartacus campaign.

Advice

Its awful, all of our characters are constantly separated, so we get 2 hour monologs for characters. Since they are all in prison. We really can't do anything but let the dm rp out his evil character. Any reaction ends in instant death, and actual conversation with npcs end in a pissing contest or being attacked. A good chuck of the campaign has been to describe rape, gory scarifies, or gory scarifies rape orgies. When the novelty of rape descriptions and dick jokes wore off it has now become boring and concerning on how often these keep coming up.

Its a "low magic" campaign so we are only allowed one spell caster. Every time he does a spell its a g$@ d%%n spectacle that takes the dm at least 5 minutes to describe casting level 1 spells.

We have been level 3, 5 sessions now, we started at level 3 mind you, and our characters have never all been together in the same room for more then 5 minutes. The DM calculated level 3 being the less troublesome for his story, err campaign.

My character, and alchemist, because that doesn't count as "magic" has been killed because I was going to be arrested and the dm told me I can't use any of my alchemist abilities in prison. Basically a wizard without his spell book. I choose to die by resisting arrest. What should I reroll as since this is getting very annoying.

or better question, what should I do? Aside from stop playing, which I am considering heavily.

...find a new DM...

If you are seriously considering continuing this campaign, ask the wizard player to commit suicide and replace him with a synthesist summoner.

Other then that, I guess monk? They are the most functional as perenial prisoners (most of their abilities work without gear). You might want to grab 2 levels of ninja then go monk, I say this because vanishing trick and disable device as a trained skill would be very useful for escaping a prison.

But honestly, why on earth are you playing in this game. It sounds truly terrible.

A Spartacus campaign would be awesome with a better DM, though. Can't you all meet up in the prison yard when you get lunch or something?

Silver Crusade

Do nothing and just let the GM talk to himself?

Prisoner/slave campaigns can be a great change of pace if run properly, but your presence here suggests you need to tell the GM you're not having fun and would like a different campaign.

If this is the usual fare for your games, seek another GM as it's not going to get better or ask to play board games.

Sovereign Court

Barbarian? Rage, kill, maim, and rape more then the other rapists in the rape orgy.

Sounds like your GMs not running your game very well however.

Life is too short to play in crappy games. It is time for everyone in your group to have a very frank discussion about the campaign and the feelings towards it. I assume you are not the only person who isn't happy with the campaign.

If the DM is not open to discussion and constructive dialog about the campaign, it is time for the hard choice - stay or go. Or change DMs. Or change to another campaign, though I have misgivings the same DM would be any better running another campaign.

Simply put, DON'T put up with it. The current campaign sounds about as fun as having root canal work done.

Liberty's Edge

Wow I like the concept reminds me of Dark Sun. However you do need a new DM, unless you are into masochism, in that case enjoy

Nope, we where not even in the same city until session 3.

For some strange reason we have characters in different places. Its basically to see how his story is playing out. We are point of view characters. It is very annoying.

With the exception of extreme meta gaming, we literally didn't have a reason to do anything in this campaign a side from the "Spartacus" slave leader player. Who can't really do anything because he is in prison and is constantly having pissing contestant with "not crixus" character. Which ends with the dm and the player growling at each other giving their best gladiator slave impression.

The player himself has long since lost the desire to do this because it hurts his throat, and its no longer entertaining.

We are severely restricted on what classes we can play. No ninjas or monks since they do not exist, in the sense that in this "region" there are no holy people or Asian assassins. This guy loves flavor text to the point that we literally can't play any of the fun classes unless the classes are basically to basic you can't reason a way for them not to exist.

This basically means any full base attack classes are A OK, since they basically amount to hitting things harder. Which all the dm has to do, and has done in the past, to counter this, is increase the ecounter's hp. Its fun to have boss encounters at level 3 with well over 100 health, where the dm is basically waiting for a player to do what he wants them to do. Also, rouges steal things, so how could they not exist. A fighter is someone who hit things hard. A ranger is someone who lives in the woods, ect.

Also, he was one of those dms that gave us a 5 page document and asked us to read this before we started playing.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm going to play the Devils Advocate (what I really would suggest is stop playing with that DM but...that's less fun)and give you the following advice to make this game fun.

1-Ask tons and I mean TONS of questions about those Rape/Sacrifices and or Rape Orgy Sacrifices. Constantly need more in depth answers and revel in the details.(I find adding five cups of coffee before the game adds a little something special to the experience as well).

2-ANY combat should be described by you as a forgone action. I swat aside his pathetic attempt and ram my sword through his chest, killing him in one blow and flinging his lifeless corpse tot he ground. If you miss/the enemy lives or the DM says it was anything less than a movie 300 kill shot,Sneer at him roll your eyes and say"Pathetic" in such a way he knows you are talking about his DMing. If this happens more than once walk out, start watching TV,yawn a bunch or casually ask him if he ever read the rules.

3-Wait till its your turn then talk none stop for forty-five minutes.I mean it,its a LOT harder than you think. Throw in thoughts, background information, feelings of friends and family,Do NOT stop no matter what. Do not let one NPC get a word in edge wise and if you can speak in character,3rd person and even try and even try and get in at least once in character dream about the meaning of life.

4-Now IF you manage #3,yawn and tell the DM you are tired and leave.Stop right that second because you will never top that.Live on in all your glory. Extra points to go on facebook where the DM and players are friends and recap the game.Next time you get together recap again with them as if you had played all that with someone else.

5-At this point if you are still playing and either unable to carry out 1-4 or did so and just feel like you MUST get in more game then do the following. Show up to the game with a gamma world character and play him instead. Act like its the same character deny and argue he insists its not. Bring up last game where you used your Fireblast Eyeballs to roast his badguys and bring up the Gat you used to mow down his minions.
Even bring out the bright green miniature. If it's at all humanly possible please oh please talk to the other players before hand so they go along with it. If they each pull out bright green gamma world miniatures and agree with you.....You win at life and you will now carry the name and title of Spartamutant Champion and King of the all of the Future World!

I just have a general rule that if anyone brings up anything more than PG 13 type stuff they probably need to work out some issues in another fashion.

Leave RPG's out of it.
