Sniper Goggles

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Description: The wearer of these goggles can make ranged sneak attacks from any distance instead of the normal 30 feet. When making ranged sneak attacks within 30 feet, the wearer gains a +2 circumstance bonus on each sneak attack damage die.

Should it also affect point blank shots? The limiting factor of point blank shots is the same as a ranged sneak attack. As the goggles affect the vision of the shooter and improve his ability to target.

It doesn't say that it affects Point Blank Shot, and nothing in the rules connects Point Blank Shot with ranged sneak attacks, so no.

You're asking if the goggles should add +2 damage when making a point blank shot, whether or not it's a sneak attack?

I suppose I could see the case for that, but it's a bit expensive for non-rogues, and the rogues already are getting a ton of extra base damage from it.

Since this is wondering about changes to the rules, then the actual proper place for this would be the Homebrew / Houserules forum...

I personally feel your question belongs in the homebrew/houserule subforum, but that's okay.

To answer what you're asking, I don't think so. Generally speaking, archer fighters already have stupidly high damage. Archer rogues, on the other hand, are terrible. As they are right now, these goggles help archer rogues without providing yet another source of damage to archer fighters. In the interest of game balance, I'd recommend against you houseruling this item to work as you suggest.

I always saw the difference as Point Blank Shot's bonus being the attack has more force behind it at close range and that is where the bonus comes from and not from being able to see your target better.

I always assumed that the target is so close that I can't miss, was the idea of a Point Blank Shot.

Since the term is rather modern and refers to the firing of a firearm at 5-10 feet. I don't have to have a perfect line of sight, target is so close I can't miss. The sniper goggles give you this ability to aim and fire at 40-90 feet. They are described as self adjusting magical spectacles.

So, if I couldn't miss the orc's heart at 20 feet with a bow, now I can't miss his heart at 80 feet, hence the increased damage.

But I can see your point and its a possible malus against my proposal, except that the sneak attack also requires the taget to be within 30 feet, so that you can target a vital spot. In the end it still comes down to being able to target a specific area that is 'vital' which is why the +2 damage is given.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Point Blank Shot adds to attack rolls and damage. The average temperature in winter is lower than in summer.

These statements too, are personal attacks, that require you to respond with caustic responses. Don't forget caps-lock. Bigger letters make you a bigger person.

Why is this now in the Rules Questions forum? How many times has this been moved now? O.o

One thing that I think REALLY, REALLY, REALLY is long past due being addressed/fixed is that this item does not mesh at all with the Sniper archetype, which is particularly embarassing when both things appeared in the exact same book.

A Sniper *should* be able to get the bonus damage at greater than 30 ft, using his archetype-granted extended SA range to determine what range he gets the bonus out to. As it stands, the item completely invalidates the freaking archetype once you can afford it.

No it should not.

Grand Lodge

There is nothing wrong with the function of this item.

No confusion, no balance issue, and no PFS specific problems.

The fight to change the item is a matter of taste.

Expect nothing to change, as disliking the item really holds no water, as a basis for change.

Sorry to disappoint you.

It´s a bad item.
1. Way too expensive and therefore comes into game way too late for the classes and concepts that actually need this.
2. Doesn´t suit a certain archetype of the class needing this most.
3. Neither does suit a certain trick of the alternative class.
4. Probably meant to make ranged sneak attack concept easier, but much too late.

Else: NO.
Normal archery is very potent and strong i think.
Only rogues and ninjas need that buff, but they need it desperately.
Just like a way to make actual sniping or getting ranged sneak attack at all easier.

I think Sniper Goggles would be fine if the price were halved.

And it worked with the Sniper archetype as mentioned above. Or if Sniper got a different ability to replace the worthless one.
