Devil May Cry

I have no idea where to start on this one. It seems that besides a full BaB progression, all the hero characters have epic saves and reflexes with supernatural acrobatics. I had a 3.0 ranger build for Dante, but it seemed to be a weak injustice by and large. How would you approach these characters?

Silver Crusade

Tiefling Sythesist/Gunslinger?

Lady is a human gunslinger no problem... How would one go about performing devil triggers though? Maybe some kind of rage like power... Maybe a PrC for devil triggers and artifact weapons that modify the devil trigger.

Base classes in the mean time, PrC later?

Apply Mythic rules and work up from there.

Even in-game Dante/Vergil are well beyond what most PCs should be capable of.

Don't even get me started on when "Cutscene Power To The Max" is in full effect.

When was the last time you saw a PC ride a missile like it was a surfboard for a full 30 seconds? Or use his sword as a big projectile weapon by shooting bullets directly into the center of the hilt after throwing it?

And that's just the third game, when he was supposedly just starting out in the demon slaying business.

Shadow Lodge

Pathfinder Rulebook, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Race wise, if we're going with the current reboot, shouldn't Dante now be a half-fiend/half-celestial?

And I agree with Rynjin, Dante deserves to be Mythic.

Devil trigger possibilities: Barbarian Rage, Alchemist Mutagen... (Anti)Paladin Smite, Dragon Disciple's Dragon Form?

A bit of blasty magic in combination with regular attacks, such as with the Magus, might be good too. Quite a bit of elemental stuff going along with some of those weapons. Though, I suppose they could just be magical items with the relevant enchantments.

I think I'm leaning toward Barb/DD as the most effective baseline.

Oh, and Vergil absolutely has the Dimensional Dervish line of feats.

Silver Crusade

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Honestly, the most important thing a player is going to need to make a Dante conversion work is a complete lack of shame while roleplaying.

As long as you've got that, you're golden. :)

Yeah... Over the top is probly a conservative term to use for some of these cut scenes.

Maybe adding half fiend/ celestial is a good start. Fighter as base class (maybe lore warden) with an ability like divine grace from the paladin. Devil/ angel trigger as a PrC would work best I think though. Maybe a 5 lvl class that lets you pull the trigger = to a number of rounds/ lvl. Gain fast healing 10, and stat increases with each devil arm adding element dmg and special attack forms... (?)

What I really want to see is a statted out Yamato. I would think it would a Major Artifact.

I've been working on converting the devil may cry series to table top for some time now. I know how difficult it can be. I will say that you were on the right track with making Dante a ranger. Recent updates in the pathfinder books have helped me to further flesh him out as well. For a base class with Dante you will need the core rulebook and the advanced players guide. Try the ranger core class with the alternate changes in Skirmisher AND Urban ranger on pages 128 and 129 of the APG. Let me know if it works out for you. I'll continue adding suggestions for other characters and for special equipment.

It's a very arduous task, and with the Pathfinder system it's very difficult to emulate due to how many abilities and powers that characters in the Devil May Cry series obtain. It's one that requires a lot of homebrew and a large upscale of what the players can do as is.

I attempted to recreate Vergil as you face him in Devil May Cry 3 for the first time.

Here's a table to symbolize how his items scale in level (as it does in the game, when you defeat more demons and acquire Red Orbs to power your abilities and weapons). Of course there are items cited in there that technically don't give any benefit to Vergil, though it was made special in attempts to not make his base character extremely overpowered).

As you can tell, it took a lot of work and a lot of homebrewing to make the character accurate to his capabilities in the game; obviously, many people will note that him being a CR 11 with what his capabilities currently are seems like a complete joke, though even without the adjusted CR it's crazy ridiculous.

Overall, I did like how it turned out, since some of the mechanics that I applied to Vergil can also apply to Dante (mainly the Devil Trigger concept). In addition, it sort of sets a ground rule as to how a character concept as such can be completed.

...you know...I wonder if we could make a mythic path that is tailor made to recreate Dante/Vergil...because I'm totally stealing some of Vergil's equipment as Mythic Items. Like have Devil Trigger as a mythic path...

....Racial Mythic Paths?

....Someone get the big bows at Paizo to hear this!!! We have thier new Book idea!

If you are willing to create Vergil, you can use Dreamscarred Press' rules for psionics and path of war. My take on Vergil would be as a Soulknife with the Gifted Blade archetype invluded for free, then adding the Psychic Armory archetype for his phantom swords, and the War Soul archetype for his combat prowess. Give him the trait that allows him to swap a class discipline for one of his choice so he can access Mithral Current maneuvers and stances, and for race, go from human, then add the advanced simple archetype, and for his Devil Trigger, make it function like the True Metamorphosis psionic power.
