Serpentine Bloodline Question

Rules Questions

So serpentine Bloodline says: "...as if they were humanoids who understood your language."
Does that mean, animal magical best etc understand what i´m telling them when i charmed them or do i actually need to speak their language to give them orders or communicate with them?

It means language-dependent spells work.

You still need to speak their language to give them commands with Charm Monster (since everything this works on could not be targeted by Charm Person), or just pantomime as the spell says.

So what would then be the best languages to learn for this?
Of course sorcerer skill points are rare, but with the gnome etymologist trait and the gnome language special i get 2 languages for every point and an additional language at level 1. Also gnomes speak sylvan which do animals too?
I guess speaking a language is better than having to cast another spell for better communication. I´m not sure if the pantomine thing will work out, especially with animals and magical beasts and "table variation".

Of course without that etymologist trait i could get focused mind or Qadira Eastern Mysteries to raise the DC +2 once per day.

What do you mean by this?

I get the impression there might be something i don´t know yet. Serpentine bloodline arcana lets me charm (person) animals, magical beasts and monstrous humanoids just like humanoids who understand my language, or not?

You already get speak with reptile animals at will at level 3 ;)

Animals don't speak any languages--most (but not all) magical beasts don't either. Sylvan is the language of fae for the most part.

Unfortunately, pantomime is exactly what you will have to do for the most part, because the animals and magical beasts are mostly not going to speak/understand any language.

You might get away with using Handle Animal, though

I had a brain fart. I was looking at the ability as just letting language dependent spells work and just didn't notice it also treated them as humanoid. Charm Person would work fine--well, except for the pantomiming thing.

Ah that relieves me^^ Thanks!

You wouldn't need to pantomime or speak a language in common.

The bloodline has two related abilities that come into effect when you cast [Mind Effecting] or [Language Dependant] spells.

First, it allows you to target normally ineligible targets (animals, magical beasts, and monstrous humanoids) as if they were humanoids.

Quote:

Secondly, it allows them to understand you, but only for the purposes of the spell.

I would say they don't actually understand your words, per se, but rather the intent of your commands.

So, Dominate Person just became Dominate Monster?

Turns DM from a 9th level spell to a 5th level one. That is extremely nice. Even more so if you crossblood with Fey for +2 to Compulsion DCs.
