I picked the Void school because i liked getting the bonuses to saves, and i like the buff/debuff aspect as well as being able to cancel out my opposition school at lvl 9

My race has the Scion of Humanity alt. racial feature which makes me listed as both an outsider and a human for things like feat prerequisites and languages

trying to decide on a direction to go with him for lvl 3+ and i am considering a few different routes:

Fast Learner- thanks to scion of humanity, i am eligible for this feat. I can take this and pick Human's alt. favored class ability and gain an extra spell in my spellbook every level as well as gaining the bonus HP (or skip out on the spell and pick a skill rank)

Spell Focus(Evocation or Conjuration)- Eventually gonna go with either one of these and their greaters, but im torn. I like blasting, but i know its bad, that said, i do have higher INT than most wizards so my DCs are higher ever so slightly, and my void school lets me debuff people without a save before i blastem, so im leaning towards evocation

Dazing Spell/ Augment Summoning- depending on my choice above im considering either one of these routes, dazing spell is nice for evoking but summoning and conjuring things is also good, maybe both? seems like it would take too long to do both

Crafting Feats- Taking Quicken Spell and later taking Craft Rod seems almost mandatory, Craft Wondrous Item is also pretty mandatory, especially since i already know (since im playing him) the other character is gonna be a jerk and want me to craft him things

Opposition Research- Getting access to those water spells so i can not have to waste such spells when i try and use

Rime Spell- picking water as my opposition kinda screwed me, since that Snowball spell is water, so im guessing that trying to Rime Spell things earlier than i get opposition research is kinda bad... also snowball is a conjuration which is another reason why i was leaning toward evocation, are all cold spells conj.?

also i need a heads up on good spells, i really, really, really, really, really, really, really, (like really) REALLY regret not getting Ear Piercing Scream, its another good blasting evocation

im also considering Additional Traits and picking up something magicky (Magical Lineage?) and possibly the race trait pyromancer if i was gonna go the blaster/evocation route

im currently lvl 1 in a homebrew campaign with no gear and i still have my 70gp starting gold
my buddy is an angelkin aasimar paladin with a handy wand of CLW in case someone was curious about infernal healing

so do i suck at being a wizard? any imput on my direction and possible choreography on the order to take things would be greatly appreciated

I'd say you've pretty much nailed a pretty good number of the power boosting effects I've seen posted on these boards. I suppose some of the more genius level power gamers might tweak your build here and there but for the most part I'd say you ran the table.

I am not the most familiar with wizards but what I did notice was a mistake with fast learner. It allows two options. Option 1: 1 hp and 1 skill point. Option 2: the alternate favored class bonus. I am not certain but I am pretty sure you cannot take the human alternate favored class bonus even with scion of humanity. A half elf or half orc would not be able to either.

You don't start with cantrips from your prohibited schools.

well, it would be rather silly imo to take it for the skill ranks, so i may skip out on fast learner

any imput on the evocation/ conjuration front?

Summoning is a wizard's most powerful tool. It allows you to control the battle field, it gives additional targets to be the focus of attention, and at higher levels, you summons can cast spells of their own. Spell focus (conjuration) followed by Augment Summoning is always a good route to go.

As an aside: how did you get +4 to Int?

GM allowed me to skip out on the Aasimar's racial SLA, and replace it with one of the those listed at the bottom of this page
the obvious choice for any SAD class is to pick your main ability score, since emberking get a bump to INT as it is, i get an extra bump to INT

as it turns out, there are aasimar variants that can be made into the ideal anything, with no negatives to stats
which imo makes up for, not having more useful racial abilities
darkvision and energy resistance are also nice

back on topic, going the conjuration route, would it be smart to ask my GM if i can switch my opposition school to something else? Just a quick glance over makes me think that water is a bad school to skip out on if i go conjuration route, especially because summoning doesnt last very long for me yet, may as well blast this low of level

Well, if the game hasn't started yet, then you should be able to tweak the character a bit.

But if you can't, realize that Summon Monster spells aren't the only summoning spells available (although they are the most versatile).

As a wizard, I focus on two types of spells: bringing more allies to the field and buffing my party (haste, etc...). I tend to rarely use direct damage spells. Magic missile and scorching ray are one time spells that have to bypass SR. Creatures that are immune to magic are immune to these. Summoning a wolf can last for several turns, gets an attack every turn, and if it hits it gets a free trip attempt. And buff spells help your BDF hit harder and/or more often.

And Mad Monkeys is still a favorite spell of mine. :)

im gonna have to look into a list of summoning spells

also, what benefits do i gain from greater spell focus, since most of the time i dont seem to care about my DCs

best feat array thus far looks like

lvl 1 Improved Initiative (already done)
lvl 3 Spell Focus(Conjuration)
lvl 5 Augmented Summoning, Superior Summoning
lvl 7 Craft Wonderous Item
lvl 9 Opposition Research
lvl10 Rime Spell, Craft Rod
lvl11 Quicken Spell

look like a good start?

Yes, wizards doing massive damage with AoE's is awesome and iconic, but that's what your Paladin and other BSF's are for. Best role for a wizard is battlefield control, which is conjurer... though extended Pathfinder evoker stuff gets pretty solid too. I guess the deciding factor would be what the rest of your party is. Got a bard and a witch in the party? Then go evoker. Nobody else offering battlefield control? Go conjurer.

And yeah, sounds like you read the guides pretty well or the books, either way solid build it looks like to me (and thanks to your GM for the +4 INT!)

Massive damage with AoEs works well if you have lots of opponents to hit with your AoEs. If you have mostly single opponents, it doesn't work nearly so well.

That said, you don't have to rule the universe to have fun as a wizard. Do what you enjoy doing; there are many ways to be effective. A wizard's most important assets are flexibility and forethought, allowing him to prepare for various situations and do what needs to be done.

Just so you know Drench, Breeze, Penumbra, Scoop, Jolt, and Root are all cantrips from the Blog, and designates them as "rare cantrips" meaning

These cantrips were left out of the book Ultimate Magic for various reasons. These are not "official" and are not supported by Paizo. Consult with your GM to see if he or she will allow any of these in his or her campaign.

The following spells are different from standard cantrips. They are rare cantrips. Spellcasters that gain access to all 0-level spells at 1st level do not gain access to rare cantrips. A spellcaster gains access to rare cantrips only by uncovering their secrets in some other way. Some are guarded by jealous mages, while others are lost in missing libraries or molder on forgotten scrolls. Emphasis mine

So even if your GM does approve them in their campaign, you don't get to start out with them automatically.

If you go specialist wizard, you get spell focus for free at 1st.

And, at 5th you get a free metamagic or item creation feat, or spell mastery.

Might want Spell Penetration in there, too.

Grand Lodge

Woah, wait, all specialists get focus?

Getting Spell Focus for free at level 1 is only for PFS (it replaces Scribe Scroll.)

i can't find where it gives me spell focus for free at 1st anywhere....
and i'm pretty much locked into void school/water opposition anyway

as of right now the party is wizard + pally + some NPC i havent met yet

Alright. I was about to have a happy fit and go rushing off to fix my feats.

At 5th, you could take an arcane discovery instead of spell mastery, item creation, or metamagic.

Keep in mind that your current plan for feats at level 5 is not legal. You took augmented summoning & superior summoning. However your wizard feat at level 5 cannot be either of these. It has to be a magic crafting feat, a metamagic feat, an arcane discovery, or spell mastery. So you may need to shift some things around.

Nom nom nom void wizard...please please please tell me there is a witch in your group also and that they hug you at every opportunity.

I think the appropriate accompaniment to a Void wizard is actually a Dual-Cursed Oracle with the Misfortune revelation - one completely broken no-save no-SR debuff calls for another, right?

If you are having fun, you are doing it right.

what the-

well six of one, half of a dozen of the oth-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

(Evil Eye, Slumber Hex, AND Misfortune, all together.)

lvl 1 Improved Initiative (already done)
lvl 3 Spell Focus(Conjuration)
lvl 5 Augmented Summoning, Craft Wondrous Item
lvl 7 Superior Summoning
lvl 9
lvl10 Opposition Research
lvl11
lvl13 Quicken Spell

2 open feats, looking at a couple things, this one in particular gets my attention, but i'm considering spell focus(evocation), spell penetration, daze spell, or even greater spell focus(conjuration) though, i cannot seem to find a use for it, as most conjurations don't require a saving throw

i could try and see if my GM will let me use the PFS rules and get Spell Focus(Conjuration) at lvl 1, so i have another free feat at lvl 3, would most likely get my augmented summoning and superior summoning done by lvl 5, then could focus more on other things

not really sure how useful craft rod is without taking a bunch of metamagic feats (at least early, i imagine most builds really get into the metamagic stuff later, since lvl 13+ is where you can actually fiddle with spells that matter)

now, at this point idk what the other party members are gonna be, its a solo campaign and im up to the GMs imagination, i could try and throw some ideas at him (argue that im saving him work....) to see, im really more concerned with getting someone rogue-ish tho

1 person marked this as a favorite.

** spoiler omitted **...

I find snowball and EPS overrated later on. Fort saves are so high and the effect if saved is minor. Shocking grasp is the better way to go at that slot because familiar can do the touch for you (i use an owl for example). Intensified MM rods are cheap and makes for a nice low level blast (10d6 for a first level slot is not bad). Electric resist is going to be less common that cold as well and alot of things doesn't have ears.

While i play a conjuration specialist I think the feats for augment summoning line are a waste as the effect on the monsters at high lvl is minor and an extra summoned is not that helpful. I'd prefer to go greater spell focus in my direct attacks schools (enchantment, evo, necro or conjuration), greater spell penetration, as well as great focus ray and line up MM feats for spell perfection. Given this is more an higher level to enjoy the effect but at low to mid the melees take the load, you job is to manage the craziness later on.

Also thinking crafting is overrated. Thats what apprentices and treasure are for. ;)

Might i suggest:

• 1st level feat: Spell focus (your pick)
• 1st level wizard: Scribe scroll (free)
• 3rd level Feat: Piercing spell
• 5th level feat: Heightened spell
• 5th level wizard: Persistent spell
• 7th level feat: Spell penetration
• 9th level feat: Greater Spell penetration
• 10th level wizard: Quicken Spell
• 11th level feat: Opposition research (necromancy)
• 13th level feat: Greater spell focus (your pick)
• 15th level feat: Spell perfection
• 15th level wizard: True Name (Planetar for me)
• 17th level feat: Weapon focus ray
• 19th level feat: Great weapon focus ray

Now you've got a wizard that can Heighten old spells, make whatever persistent when ti needs to stick, Quicken for economy, get past most SR with GSP, but able to add piercing for really tough SR. On Perfection you're now doubling your GSP to +8 SR, focus to +4 to DC and +4 to hit on rays. This makes you a force to be feared by even the most stuborn bosses endgame

Just some thoughts

" my void school lets me debuff people without a save before i blastem, so im leaning towards evocation"

I don't think you can benefit from your own use of Reveal Weakness unless you use Quicken metamagic. Only lasts 1 round.

"When you activate this school power as a standard action, you select a foe within 30 feet. That creature takes a penalty to its AC and on saving throws equal to 1/2 your caster level (minimum –1) for 1 round."
