I want to give a shutout to whoever created the Charango of Instant Celebrity ... It made me learn a new word, it would be a fun item to use, and I absolutely loved that it was made out of a carbuncle carapace! That brought a huge grin to my face, remembering fun in the Kingmaker campaign. It was actually one of the two most memorable items I saw while voting, along with Gorum's Stompers. Unfortunately, I only saw it once and immediately regretted not saving a copy when I voted for it. One item that I really liked was the relativistic boots. I’m surprised it didn’t even make the Top 89, and I think it might have fallen victim to the general wariness regarding time related items. Although I didn’t like the name and found the required spells a little off, I felt it dealt with time travel in a clean way, mechanically speaking. It allowed the wearer to disappear from reality and reappear a few rounds later. I could see some fun uses for that item – like escaping a chase, waiting for an opponent’s spell to wear out, avoiding effects that last a few rounds, or even removing yourself from battle to avoid dying. Actually, I kind of enjoy the idea of using this item in a one-on-one combat: you disappear and your adversary is left waiting and wondering where you went. I’d only suggest the addition of making your enemies flat-footed against you in the round you reappear.
Anyway, congratulations to whoever came up with that item, I upvoted it a lot of times.

I remember that item, Pedro. I agree, but I think my thought was it'd be awfully boring as a player to have that. I'd be sitting there at the table with nothing to do while everyone else continues to play for the next XX minutes. And depending on the level/complexity of the combat, XX could be half an hour.

There was an item that was some type of insignia patch (military I think) that allowed those with the item sown onto a worn garment to talk to each other in a secret language. I liked that one a lot. It envoked a special forces/military vibe that as military myself I got.
I didn't take any notes, sadly, so what I did like a don't quite remember the names. However, some mentioned sparked my memory...
Linarian's Bane
Paper Messenger
Seer's Soap
Those last two were built on interesting concepts for me that put them a step above similar items. Imagery were fantastic.

Thanks for the mixed reviews of votes for and against the Chelish Silver-Tongued Devils. Sounds like there was enough right, but it didn't hold. Ahhh... Somewhere in the middle. Story of my life. Which isn't bad wh... Nevermind.
I admit, it went through some tinkering that never jelled for me either because I was avoiding a SIAC (darn Ultimate Magic spell), but I look forward to the feedback regarding the many elements of the creative/formating process. Thanks, CHEERS. Well received!
I like the idea immensely, but I like summoners too. I would have up voted this if I had seen it.
I can think of some tweaks, but I wonder if that's a result of my biases and not a reflection from the judges point-of-view which would help the designer more. I suppose that's the joy of looking at an item from the non-creator side. I want to play a summoner in a campaign and would love this item. It will be interesting to see what people have to say on this.
I'd definitely put it on the player using it to keep up with how to apply it.

The Charango was mine. I sent it to you in a PM. Glad you liked it. You made me feel better after I had seen that I didn't even make the top 89.
It's disappointing because, although the item wasn't perfect, I feel that the judges did not take a good look at the items after 89.
I guess that's the way it goes. I had a great time entering and voting. I have to thank everyone at Pathfinder for creating a contest that get so many people involved. I'll be back next year and will plan longer than two days.

You are absolutely right, we didn't.
If we read all the submissions and picked the best from among them that would have just been the system we used each prior year. What, then, would have been the point of public voting? We had to find a way to respect the public input yet still be able to use our experience and knowledge to select the top 32. I think, frankly, that we found the right balance. Your gripe, I'm afraid, is not with the judges--it is with the fact that the public didn't like your item enough (as compared to the other really good items). Plus, one of the reasons for the public vote is because the first round sorting of items is an incredible time consuming onerous task. Reading, lets say, 1000 items takes a TON of time. It was becoming too hard on the judges, too much of a time commitment. So we discussed it and agreed that the top 89 was the right place to draw the line.
I did what I would call a spot check. I reviewed some items as they came in and then periodically I reviewed items after the deadline outside of the top 89 (because I am a glutton for punishment). I didnt find a single one that I though should bump an item in the top 89.

I was shocked that Candle of Distant Assurance did not make it into the top 32.
It was my personal favorite.
It spoke to me and seemed to have in my opinion hit the right spot in terms of flavor and usefulness.
However this is in no way a disparagement of the judges, all of them have my respect and I completely believe their choices are sound and made with good reason even if I disagree with some of their picks.
Other than the candle my other off the top of my head item was Dryad's Savior. I liked it, and it was definitively in my keep folder.
I will get more into my keep folder later after Friday.
Just to be clear, yes I did enter, and no I will not be talking about my item until the critique my item thread opens up.

I really think you found the right tone for discussion. Judging is subjective. So your thoughts and feelings on items you like are perfectly valid and worthy of discussion. Where it gets problematic is when it becomes "those idiot judges passed over this awesome item, what do they know!" That's when its no longer a discussion.
I agree with you. The candle was a really good item. It was one of the ones that by popular vote was in the top 20, but when we judges sorted them we didn't feel the same way about it. So that is certainly one that will be interesting to discuss when that thread opens up.
Please remember that when we are sorting the top 89 for the top 32, our standard is super-high. We agree all top 89 are great items, way better even than "would they make a book of magic items." We are truly picking the best of the best. So not putting the candle in the top 32 doesn't mean we thought there was something wrong with it. It was great. We just thought the other items showed us more and showed us a designer behind the item that would be a better contestant for Superstar.

I can understand that you will have different sorting criteria, and honestly expect that you would. You and the other judges have factors of magnitude more experience than the vast majority of people who are involved on the contestant side of RPG superstar. Please note the only reason I do not say "All" is that I do not claim to know the experience level of every contestant.
That is the reason why I honestly would find it both reprehensible and I admit hilarious to argue with any of you in that manner.
To use your Olympics example it would be like if I, a 31 year old engineer with a lack of athleticism tried to tell the silver medalist in Olympic hurdles
"No! You should jump hurdles this way! I know better than you! Look you only got silver so you are only second best in the world this Olympics! Obviously there is no chance that you and the gold medalist were only .05 seconds apart! Geez..."
Sorry for the divergence.
The point of this post is to agree that discussion is good, and to thank you for your kind post. As well as agreeing that yes if the Candles creator does post in the critique my item thread I will look forward to the response.

That's one reason I used gymnastics as an example. There is a subjective element to the judging, just like there is here. We don't pretend that there is some absolute criteria. So you are free to have your opinions and that is good. That's also another reason why the judges matter. For many years, I was the guy who would be publishing 3P freelancer work. Sean obviously does his thing for Paizo. Wolfgang is the man, too. So while subjective, we have a perspective that is helpful and experienced--something community members don't necessarily have.
Thank you Clark for taking the time to answer all of us. I am sure that everyone here greatly appreciates it, and the very long hours that Sean, Wolfgang, and yourself put into the judging. Heaven knows I could only handle a few hours at a time. I will say that my hubris did get to me a little (playing and DMing since first edition), but by seeing the top 89 I realized that my item simply wasn't appealing. This however does give me some time to plan for items that are more interesting and appealing.
If possible, and when time permits, could you post how you got into the gaming industry? I personally am looking for a career change, and am hoping to do something that I have a passion for.
Thank you again.

I'm not a judge (obv), but I am someone who downvoted the candle quite a few times. (I upvoted it too, but it was more of a middler for me).
The problem I had with it was it was too much of a pastiche of real-world traditions, particularly Colonial ones. It was just one step away from a magical liberty bell that when rung casts freedom of movement on someone. That pastiche element might have been more obvious to me as a European, where the candle-in-the-window doesn't have the same sentimental touch as it does to the North American readers.

Well it’s Friday where I am, so here are my shout-outs, in no particular order at all.
Candle of Distant Assurance ¬– arguably a plot-device item, but people who have seen my item will know I hold nothing against those! I just thought it was lovely to find something so unashamedly sentimental amongst all the flame and thunder of the usual adventuring magic.
Roost of Razors – I really loved this one. I wouldn’t want to be around when someone opened the cage!
Discordant Cur – A great name and things should always be struck soundly or not at all.
Mushroom Goblin – Mushroom + goblin somehow seems a good fit. I know in Warhammer lore they are closely linked, but nonetheless a fungoid goblin seemed fun and original.
Golden Monkey of Greed – Great name, great flavour, got my vote a few times.
Nautilus Pack of Tangled Tentacles – I think I’ll make my players say this five times quickly whilst inebriated for extra XP. I love the name, I love nautiluses (nautili?), and I love this item most of all.
On a similar theme the cloak with sticky tentacles (can’t remember the name) was a great cinematic item.
There was also a scarf (I believe) that independently entangled and parried enemy attacks. Or maybe that’s my idea for next year.
Honourable mentions to the Magpie Totem, Blackbriar Boots, Matryoska of the Planar Cadre (another great name), and Volcanic Helm (one of the ones that seemed to appear again and again in voting).
Never came across the Seanettle Submersible, but it certainly sounds like my kind of thing. Same for the Sling Saddle.
Finally, some credit to the Gauntlet of Reality. Perhaps something of a SIAC (albeit with some nice bells and whistles), it was exactly the SIAC my campaign needed when I came across it, and played an integral part preventing a wizard escaping magically in an encounter a few weeks back. To the creator, my thanks.

Wow, thanks guys! As the person who wrote the Candle of Distant Assurance, it was incredibly gratifying to read this. I'm frankly blown away to learn that my item was voted so high by the public.
I don't feel bad at all that the judges passed me over. I'm definitely a little disappointed, but I have no hard feelings on the subject. I hoped that a non-flashy item that was really character focused would stand out among all the whiz-bang exciting items, and it looks like it did, to the public at least. But I can certainly see how it might lack a certain "spark" of Superstar-ness.

If possible, and when time permits, could you post how you got into the gaming industry? I personally am looking for a career change, and am hoping to do something that I have a passion for.
Duskrunner, I just started a game company when Wizards announced it was going to open the content of D&D. I was one of the first to jump on and I started Necromancer Games. I subsequently got my old friend Bill Webb involved and he and I ran Necro for years. I got hooked up early on with White Wolf who were my print partner and distributor. That was a great relationship. Basically, I just did it.
As for being "in the industry," I was for a while. I have since gotten out of Necro and my buddy Bill has continued with Frog God games. But even when I was in, I was only partly in. I am and have been an attorney and I am actually a sitting judge (like, guy in robe in court). So gaming was always a passion but never a full time career for me. It remains a passion and I have many good friends in gaming, the vast majority of which all are either at Paizo or have some connection to Paizo. Another good friend of mine, who I met through gaming, is Steve Wieck (former head of White Wolf) and he had a theory that life is too short to work with people you don't like. What great advice that is. That's why I love dealing with Paizo because in addition to being a great company, they are great people.
So my advice to you is just start a game company. Write. Create. Publish. These days with pdf publishing it is even easier than when I started.
If I can do it, you can do it.
