+1 to +6 Stat Tomes

Advice

Im a little confuse, the books tell me a +1 stat tome (example, manual of strength) is min lvl 17 and so are all the others up to +6. Why in the world would they make the min lvl so high on a +1 stat tome? Or am I not understanding how it works?

I'm pretty sure it's because you need to be able to cast Wish to make the Tome. But I'm not really well-read in regards to crafting rules, so that's just my hypothesis.

Thats exactly right, the caster level on magic items tends to be the lowest level you would need to be in order to cast the component spells normally, and qualify for whatever crafting feats are involved, for spell-replication items. So in this case, you've got a 9th level spell, and so the item is 17th CL.

So can some one cast a stat tome on someone of lower level, say a level 5 or 6? Or for those items do u have to craft and cast them yourself?

It's not a matter of casting the item. Once it's made, anyone can use it, so if a level 1 character has a +5 Manual of Strength, they're free to get the full benefit.

It's more a matter of where they would get the book in the first place though, since a level 1 character is unlikely to have 125K+ GP lying around. But you never know, I suppose :P

Stat tomes/books don't really have a minimum level requirement to be read by a PC. GM's usually have a "requirement" that the PC's be a certain level, such as a +3 stat book would be fine for a group of 8-10th level PC's, but a +5 book is too much, as an example.

Item's caster level determines three things:

- DC of a skill check required to make the item is equal to 5 + CL.
- Caster level of an item determines strength of its magic aura when scanned with detect magic or similar abilities.
- Level-based variables of spell effects produced by the item are calculated using the item's CL.

All the ability increasing manuals have the same caster level because they are, in a sense, one to five wish spells bound together into single item.

As noted, the various tomes have a caster level of 17 as they require either Wish or Miracle to create. However, the tomes don't actually require a specific caster level, they just require a caster level high enough to cast the prerequisite spells. If you raise the crafting DC by +5 to ignore the spell required, you could potentially create any of those tomes at a lower level. If you had the gold, you could make a +5 tome at level 3 (when you can get Craft Wondrous Item).

That would require some major buffing to do so.

What you may be missing is tabletop Pathfinder RPG is not DDO. You don't nom nom at early levels.

Traditionally speaking, manuals of gainful dexterity and their ilk are considered rare items in the milieu.

Pathfinder has them, but it is the ingredients of the wish spell that bookmark them at high levels. They are QUITE a prize.
