Cleric Optimization Help!

Hey Fellas,

I've been having some issues when attempting to craft a Cleric for an upcoming game. I should say I've been having issues when attempting to craft an interesting Cleric that would be fun to play, and fit a concept I have thought of.

I was imagining a Human(azlanti) who was adopted into a Varisian family after orphaned when his family died under suspicious circumstances. He comes of age and learns of the fate of his family, he becomes obsessed with researching his family history and the history of Azlant. His ancestors begin to haunt him and spur him on to recover the secrets of his people and his family, as well as the fallen deity Aroden.

I imagine a caster focused Cleric with control/debuffing as a focus, but if someone else knows of a better build using more of the up to date books I would love to hear them.

I considered heavily, Oracle, but couldn't decide on a mystery nor the first level spells to take.

Oh, and if it helps we're playing Rise of the Runelords with a 25 points buy.

Well for fluff purposes the oracle is more suted with the haunt or w/e its called curse.

For optimization purposes though a neutral cleric serving a neutral god would be best because then u get access to Versatile Channeler feat which allows u to channel both positive and negative energy. Combine that with Guided Hand, Channel Smite, the Vital Strike feats, and a weapon with Spell Storing Harm or any of the inflict spells and u got beast damage. Guided hand allows u to use wis instead of dex or str with ur god's favored weapon. Channel Smite is the prerequisite of Guided Hand and it allows u to, as a swift action, channel ur energy in2 a single strike doing ur channel positive / negative energy against a target. Also if u toss in a few levels of rogue and get Improved Feint and Greater Feint then as a move action u can make a single target flat - footed to ur attack and be able to apply sneak attack damage as well. I have done it before and the single target damage is insane and gives u something to do when ur not healing.


A haunted oracle with the ancertor mystery sounds like what you are going for. Aroden was known as the LAST Azlant, and with the +2 to every stat, you should talk to your DM before making a pureblood Azlant. Other humans can have Azlant blood, but only the basic human traits.


You want to build a cleric but do not mention a deity. Nothing in the background you stated mentions religion in any way shape or form. This does not suggest a cleric. An Oracle works better for what you want. They do not have to worry about a deity. Nawtyit is right this sounds more like an oracle of ancestors.

The first thing anyone playing a cleric should have in mind is the deity. You may start to build and find there is a deity that fits your cleric better than the one you thought, but you should at least have an idea of the deity you want to serve.

Someone posted a concept where he thought he was a deity and wanted to fake it. I suggested he play an oracle so he did not have to fake it. I also suggested that he may be a reincarnation of Aroden so was not crazy. Maybe something like this would work for you. If you want to be a healer the life oracle is about the best healer in the game. For something more combat worthy an oracle of battle. The ancestor mystery seems to fit better than either of those for what you are looking at.

Silver Crusade

In terms of pure power, Desna is probably your best bet for a deity. Travel, Liberation and Luck domains are the three most powerful cleric domains in the game.

Travel Domain gives you a extra 10ft of movement, the ability to ignore difficult terrain, and a short range teleport. You also get access to non-cleric spells like Longstrider, Fly, Dimension Door, Teleport and Greater Teleport

Liberation Domain gives you Freedom of Movement on yourself and later, a 30-ft AURA of Freedom of Movement. Since Freedom of Movement is one of the best spells in the game...this is powerful.

Luck Domain gives you the ability to touch and ally and grant them the ability to re-roll all d20s for the next round. That's correct. ALL d20s. That's every skill check, save, and attack, they get 2 shots at each for one round. Later on, you can re-roll d20s as well.


As an interesting idea you could reflavor a Razmiran Priest Sorcerer as a "Prophet of Aroden" as a powerful controller/debuffer.

For a cleric a separatist worshiper of Iomedae with the domains of glory or law and protection or knowledge would fit a worshiper of Aroden as would any of the one domain archetypes with glory or law as the domain.

Get Faimlier any you want Get +3 Skill to a skill you want ,and Alertness
The rest of the chain for more spells. Wizard Spell of you list know+1 kool
Then take Adetp channel ORC Race Book 2 channel 2 time per day and extar Channel

This give good Spell list, Blood line powers, Revelation Powers, Burts and Skills
1 main Stat CHA

OR Dark myster Oracle and Shadow/Snake/Undead/Aberrant blood line via Eldritch Heirage chain

Do not forget about extra Revelations feat

And Varisian Tatoo feat and extra Trait to do with your back ground stuff.
Take the extra Spell know as you level up instead of HP/skill point.

With School Focus 2 time and Blood line abilty of Arcane you you DC of spell could be spell level +4 +CHA mod that Nasty good.

That sounds like a great idea. I really like the eldritch heritage line with arcane to fill the theme.

I'm really struggling on the build for the first three levels though. The spell selection at first level seems very difficult to manage especially.

Liberty's Edge

Relax a bit. After level one, scrolls and wands can round out your spell list.

I'd go with command and shield of faith, myself.


Pro evil over shield of faith


Maybe, I like the anti mind control part of Pro evil a lot. But you can wand it. Shield of Faith improves with caster level.

Know anything about the campaign? If enemies are non evil, that matters too.
