Combat Maneuvers vs Mirror Image

Rules Questions

In game I attempted to grapple a enemy npc with mirror image on and the gm told me that I had to roll to see if I attempted to grapple one of the images. I argued that a CMB roll was not an attack roll and therefor was not affected by the mirror image spell which states to roll randomly only on attack rolls. Obviously the gm can rule what ever way he likes but I was wondering who was right by raw?

I'd say you still need to roll. You still don't know which one is real...

I think your GM called it correctly.

Isn't a combat maneuver performed with an attack roll per RAW?

By my interpretation, I would say mirror image applies.

Edit - dang, I'm even slower than a grick.

But wait, there's more!

From the very same paragraph:

Quote:
Combat maneuvers are attack rolls, so you must roll for concealment and take any other penalties that would normally apply to an attack roll.

My bad seems he was right. I have to play as a caster one of these days some of the second level spells are really epic. Would closing the characters eyes and letting blind fight kick work against mirror image? Replacing a 75% miss chance with a 50% miss chance with a re-roll?

Mostly, yeah. Be sure to clear with your GM how it's going to work, since it's not really defined in the rules. Action to close, action to open, duration of blindness, etc.

Once you've successfully grappled a target with Mirror Image up -- I'd rule that *you have him* -- for as long as you don't let go -- and that if you have some follow-up ability attendant to grapple (a choke or squeeze ability), you can trigger it without the miss chance.

I'd rule it similar to gaze attacks...you want to close your eyes, fine, but you're that way until your next turn.

It also seems to follow that anybody who sees you grappling one of the images isn't going to be fooled as to which one is real. So it's a long-shot move but one that could be really handy... if you get lucky.

Hmm, that's a good use for a swarm of weak summons: "Each of you grapple one of those guys!"
