Chalk that one up to another 'positive' for Organised Religion.

Get back to me when you are prepared to vote in favor of extinction of third world backwaters.

Ugh. This sort of shit sickens me.

Pfft. This is no different than when the Red Guard in China destroyed Buddhist temples and art. Don't blame religion; fanaticism comes in many flavors, but the secret ingredient is human stupidity.

But are you prepared to determine what is acceptable for others and impose it on them? Red Robed Clerics conducting Alignment checks on every street corner to exterminate the chaotically-aligned comes to mind.

This already happens. It's called law, law enforcement, and a judicial system. It's not a perfect system, but it does keep most idiots from running around destroying that which they find offensive, all willy-nilly.

I guess it's the destruction that gets to me. Couldn't they lock it up so that those they didn't want to see it couldn't? I realise that probably means every to these guys, but at least it'll still be there when they ain't.

It's the intolerance that I can't tolerate.

Human stupidity by itself doesn't seem quite so harmful. Get a bunch of Stupids together under the leadership of someone with a big ego and there's problems. That is the sort of thing I was referring to.

That being said, I don't think much of fanaticism either, be it fanaticism of religion or 'Ultra Darwinism' or pagans or atheists or scientists or Woody Allen. I've found that those who argue loudest tend to know the least about the situation/argument/big picture.

When I say "stupidity" I'm using my own personal definition of the word: self-imposed ignorance. That tends to mold the type of people that destroy historical artifacts in fits of pique.

That's a good definition.

Honestly, that kind of communism is religious, non-critical thinking thought, so there is no weasly "atheists do it too" jab to be made here. At least the Chinese for the most part now see that the Cultural Revolution was an embarrassing period in their history.

But seriously, f@$$ those guys. If anyone deserved to be put in a rocket and shot off our planet to find their own planet its those pissant little minions and their destructive beliefs.

If I was making a jab, it was at the entire human race, not at atheists.

Lets just be happy it was a small group of religious whackos and not the organized actions of the government. Its not like every group and religion doesn't have their share of nutjobs.

Pfft.

Did you see what that fanatic in Spain did?

~sighs aat the general stupidity of humanity in general~

Tolerance and True Believers generally don't mix.

On the other hand,it's their land and their culture. Who are we to judge? It's not like we've haven't destroyed things precious and ancient for other reasons. Is doing so for capital gain any more noble?

It depends on the region and on the religion. I know plenty of very religious people who don't go around trying to destroy everything that doesn't agree with their beliefs.

Liberty's Edge

Without Religion (and True Believers), these carvings would never have existed in the first place ;-)

Fanaticism manifests in different ways. In America, religious (xtian) fanaticism comes hand in hand with denial of womens rights, historical revisionism, and scientific ignorance.

You can be "very religious" without being a fanatical zealot, however, and I'm guessing that's what you're talking about.

Its not just fanaticism...

Property developers that want protected land have in the recent past have destroyed objects of historical significance just so they could put up a mall or chain store.

In Rome they destroy things everyday - because if they didn't the whole city would grind to a halt. The difference is most of the time they will get an archaeologist to dig it and preserve what they can.

Archaeology is destruction - if you dig something you are irrevocably changing it - that is why they only dig some sections of a site and leave others for latter for people with better tools and techniques of preservation.

Pompey is a prime example - it has been safely buried mostly unchanging for roughly 2000 years - we did it up and it starts to fall apart in roughly 100-200 years.

That reminds me - saw the Ad for a Guy Pierce Scifi - Lockdown - a Supermax prison on a Space Station. The expense of fifty million per prisoner to get to space plus regular resupply to keep them alive and the prison itself...prohibitive. Perhaps an earthly Prison colony like the old days?

This was a very week and cowardly act. Art that is 2000 years older than their 'book' says it is must scare them. Is their religion to them so week like a house of cards? You can build a tower hundreds of stories tall but forbid you actually have someone climb it like its supposed to.

Yes, bad people will look for what ever reason they can to excuse and motivate their actions to make it seem just and right; however you have to still consider the religion and beliefs as we all know from history beliefs on their own can push these violent sides more. I wont point fingers or name names on this though.

I assumed it was more that they were pagan carvings. Dedicated to a false god or whatever.

Not so much that they were too old.
