Do ranged attacks always provoke attacks of opportunity?

Rules Questions

Looking at that snap shot feat, and wondering, yeah but, I don't want to be using my bow at 5' because I'd provoke attacks of opportunity.

Unless there's some way to not provoke. Some feat I'm missing?

Otherwise there's no way I'd even want to go for Improved Snap Shot that threatens 10', because chances are I'd end up at 5' or within 10' reach most of the time.

Point Blank Master (Combat)
You are adept at firing ranged weapons in close quarters.

Prerequisite: Weapon Specialization with selected ranged weapon.

Benefit: Choose one type of ranged weapon. You do not provoke attacks of opportunity when firing the selected weapon while threatened.

Normal: Using a ranged weapon while you are threatened provokes attacks of opportunity.

Special: Starting at 6th level, a ranger with the archery combat style may select Point Blank Master as a combat style feat, but he must have Weapon Focus instead of Weapon Specialization in the selected weapon.

i also thing that the zen archer and the archer(fighter archetype) have taht ability at some point.

Unless there are certain circumstances, such as a Feat or Status, they will always provoke attacks of oppurtunity

Ranged attacks always provoke. The only exception is if you have an ability that says you don't. For example, you don't provoke when making an AoO when using Snap Shot. But you will otherwise.

Point Blank Master is a fighter only feat that lets you ignore the AoOs from making ranged attacks. It could potentially save you from AoOs from all your attacks.

Point Blank Master can be taken by Fighters, Rangers with the Archery Combat Style, and is an automatic feat for Zen Archers.

Fighters with the Archer Archetype also get an ability that is similar.

a lot of nijaded people :)

thanks all, just noticed Point Blank Master in the Advanced Players feats, available as a Ranger's special feat at 6th, but unlike others requiring Weapon focus 1st (normal Weapon spec, so fighter 4th+ only)

Now it makes sense about Snap Shot feats in Ultimate Combat

All we need is a feat allowing defense with a bow, like +1 plus enhancement bonus, and I can drop the shield and weapon entirely.

Nicos=Swiftest Ninja

Zen archer gets the Point Blank Master feat free at 3rd level and the Snap Shot feat for free at 6th level.

The fighter Archer archetype gets snap shot for free at 9th level.

Snap shot says you don't provoke attacks of opportunity when you make attacks of opportunity with a ranged weapon, so you'd only provoke during your turn.

Elves can use Stabbing Shot during their turn to push an opponent back 5 feet, potentially avoiding an attack of opportunity.

Gwen Smith:

The Fighter Archer archetype does not gain snap shot for free at 9th level. It gets 'Safe Shot' which is an ability basically identical to Point Blank Master.

APG p104 Archer Archetype wrote:
Safe Shot (Ex): At 9th level, an archer does not provoke attacks of opportunity when making ranged attacks with a bow. This ability replaces weapon training 2.
