I am making a new 6th lvl PC and will want to do a Fighter. Last time I played a fighter was during the time of AD&D 2ed w/ the Fighter's Handbook.
My idea is to use weapon + light shield. My armor is agile 1/2 plate. I am considering using Aldori sword as main weapon. Now my concern is with the plethora of feats. What will be the best way to maximize his attack/dmg. BTW, the current party is composed of a rogue, summoner, ranger, and a bard. They need a tank.
So far I have chosen:
power attack
cleave
shield focus
twf
improved shield bash
greate cleace
shield bash
I have not chosen my extra feat for being human. I would like to take Vital Strike but it seems that when you get your 3rd attack at level 11 or 12 level you still loose them b/c of this feat.
Feats I have in the back of my head are (in no particular order):
lunge
vital strike
dodge
mobility
improved critical
Any help is appreciated. I envision my PC to be frontline character. Not interested in mounted nor range combat.
Help me make him a tough SoB. What flavors can I add to it? Trip or bull rush or criticial fighter? Any specific feats or feat tree? Pros/Cons?
thx

Sword and shield is a fun kind of build. High AC, not bad damage output. The real fun comes when you can bully people around.
I don't particularly recommend Vital Strike. It's a feat that works best if you are moving around often and have a huge weapon. You have two smaller, but no less excellent, weapons and will be focusing on standing in front of someone and delivering.
Cleave is a decent feat for you right now, although I advise you to be careful with how you take them. Fighters can retrain feats at every 4th level. This means that when 8th level comes around, you can trade out Cleave (which may by this point have become unuseful) for something that may suit you better (such as Improved Critical or one of the combat maneuver feats.)
This guide to the fighter by kcmorris is a very good starting point for any fighter. You'll find what you're looking for under Sword and Board.
I do recommend the Bull Rush feat chain. Hitting someone with a shield bash and pushing them away towards an ally that they can take an attack of opportunity on them is brilliant use of the battlefield.
Also, if you are set more upon the STYLE of the sword and board as opposed to the actual fighter ClASS, a Ranger can make a very effective sword and board using their combat feats. In particular, a Ranger can take the feat Shield Master without any prerequisites at SIXTH LEVEL. If your shield has any enhancements on it to improve your AC, you get to add that on your attack and damage rolls AND you don't suffer penalties on your attack roll. This can make your shield a more reliable weapon than your sword, and you'd look pretty awesome doing it.
Of course, in the Ranger case, you don't get the full armor proficiency. I you want to stay a tin can, you certainly may. And you should still take Shield Mastery when you hit 11th level, because it makes you better than awesome at what you do.
Hope I have helped!

Hi. THX!!!!!!!!!! The link you provided is VERY useful. I never thought of a Ranger being good at sword/board.

Remember that if you want to retrain a feat you can't have used it as a prerequisite for another feat (ie you can't retrain Cleave if you have taken Greater Cleave)
I'd also suggest considering if you can afford one feat for something outside of combat - fighters get a lot of feats but often only have one role in a party - you could if using the Advanced Race Guide take the human alternate racial trait that subs out three skill focus feats (at 1, 8 and I think 15th level) for the human bonus feat. This might help balance out the fighter's lack of skill points and could also open up the Eldritch Heritage chain of feats (if you have the CHA) might not fit your concept but could add flavor and unusual functionality.
Also don't forget that the aldori sword required excite weapon proficiency and has dedicated feats, archetypes and prestige classes to consider.

Very cool. Glad you like the Ranger idea.
If you're going for the Ranger, there are a few ways you could take it. One is a high strength/low dex version, the other is mid strength high dex version. DEX is a requirement for two-weapon fighting. To use the shield, you will be fighting with two weapons, obviously. It's a matter of how many hits you want and how you plan to use your shield.
My take would probably be to still use your Dexterity to qualify for the improved versions of two-weapon fighting later on. If you're cool with only having the one extra attack, put all of your gusto into strength and worry about only getting that one good hit with your shield to push someone out of the way.
Rangers don't get as many feats, but they do get other class features that more than compensate. Get an animal companion and train him well.
Possible build suggestion...
1. Power Attack, Two-Weapon Fighting (Human bonus)
2. Shield Slam (bonus)
3. Improved Shield Bash, Endurance (Bonus)
4. Spells and an Animal Friend
5. Lots to choose from! Shield Focus? You could also take Diehard, which is one of my personal favourite feats so long as you get the prerequisite for free.
6. Shield Mastery
7. Improved Two-Weapon Fighting
If you want to focus on strenth over dex, replace Improved Two Weapon fighting with Shield Slam, and put TWF in the second level slot. Take Shield Focus (or any other feat) as your human bonus.

Remember on the sword and board ranger, once you get shield master at 6th, your shield can be used as the MAIN weapon for your iteratives, and thus get to bullrush multiple enemies with that weapon, while hitting anyone who's still close with the sword as an offhand.
As a matter of fact, I have a PFS char who went 6 ranger/6 brawler fighter for that reason, taking the Spiked Destroyer feat at 7 to get a free spiked armor strike on shield slams because they provide a bullrush.
Brawler fighter gets weapon training at 3 starting at +1hit/+3 damage, shield bash and spiked armor counted in his weapon training list.
at 9 you should have shield +4 at least, +3 weapon training, +3-5 str, + any power attack you use, to damage on a shield bash, around a 1d6 + ~10-15 attack. also proc'ing a bullrush with a ~+16 to CMB and a free spiked gauntlet strike for 1d6 + ~8 (+enchants + PA).

as you want to TWF maybe you would like
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/fighter/archetypes/paizo---fig hter-archetypes/mobile-fighter
it would be god because you do not need to divide your weapon trainig between your shield and your main weapon, and at higher levels you will have a semi pounce ability.
posible 20 point buy build
Human - mobile fighter
Str 18
Dex 15
Con 12
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 7
or
Str 18
Dex 15
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 12
Cha 7
1. TWF, Improved shield bash, weapon focus
2. Power attack
3. Iron will
4. Weapon specialization
5. step up
6. Lunge

TGMaxMaxer |
Brawler Archetype to make the shield bashes effective, scizore(1d10/x2) as the off hand weapon, wearing spiked armor.
Str 18 dex 15, human to str... level 6. Cheezy Heirloom weapon(shield) for +2 to bullrushes with it. I think there's another trait that does +1 or 2 to a maneuver as well... or you can take one of the will save or perception as a class skill traits to help you out of combat.
Take PA, Cleave, Imp Shield Bash, Imp Bull rush, Shield Slam, TWF, Spiked Destroyer, Cleaving Finish. Looking good at lunge, and gr bullrush so they provoke soon.
This lets you hit twice with the shield as a bash, at +9/+4 1d6+7, and the Scizore at +9 1d10+5. gives you 2 bullrushes at + 15, and if one is successful gives you an attack at +11 for 1d6+7 on the bullrushed target as a swift action. If you kill someone with this, you get another +11 attack for 1d6+7 and another bullrush.
Great cleave in PF requires 3 enemies to line up for you such as
x x x
- o -
- - -
or
- x x
- o x
- - -
which almost never happens. Cleaving finish however lets you take an attack on anyone you can reach when you drop a foe, so you can hit the guy behind you.
Unless you're taking a dwarf with the dwarven feats goblin cleaver and orc hewer, you'll never get much mileage out of great cleave.

@Gwen Smith
No Combat Patrol would be a hindrance since u would lose out on being able to use combat expertise and defensive fighting dodge ac which also means the person next to u that ur protection also losses out on the ac u give them from Draconic Defense. In all u would be losing 8 dodge ac and ur friend will be losing 8 natural ac. Plus u only have so may AoO.
