Harrower / Varisian Fortune Teller Build Advice

Sovereign Court

Hey Pathfinders,

Within the next few weeks, I am going to be playing in a Carrion Crown Adventure Path and I am looking for the best way to play a Varisian Fortune that would take the Harrower prestige class.

My three options are:

Bard
Sorcerer
Wizard

But here is where it gets interesting. I also want to have proficiency with bladed scarves and to take the Deadly Dealer feat so that I can throw Harrow cards as if they were darts. But to also become a Harrower at a decent level.

Here are my problems:

Bard, perfect for stats and skills and feats that I need, but they can't be a Harrower until level 8

Sorcerer, starved for skills and feats, and stats are hard to balance unless I take the Sage bloodline, but still feat starved, Able to be Harrower at level 7

Wizard, lots of skills, can he a harrower at the earliest of level 6. But the wizard doesn't seem to have the feel of a Fortune Teller, and I prefer spontaneous casting over prepared spells.

Anyone want to help me with my boondoggle of a problem?

Oracle? Better BAB progression, skills, etc. Eligible by 7th level, just like a sorcerer. But this route implies divine caster rather than arcane.

If you still want to remain an arcane caster, maybe a witch? It's about the same as going the wizard track, but might be a bit more thematically appropriate for you.

Keep in mind that none of the "quick" gateway classes into the Harrower prestige class are going to be particularly effective as a melee combatant (with the bladed scarf) or even a ranged comabatant (with the Deadly Dealer feat). The BABs of the wizard, sorcerer, and witch are just going to progress too slowly to make for an effective combatant by the time you qualify as a Harrower.

The bard and oracle classes are the next best options if you want a meaningful combat contributor, as they progress at a quicker BAB. Even so, the bard will take much longer because of his slower spell progression. Consequently, an oracle is the fastest route with the strongest combat ability when you get there.

Sovereign Court

Good point, I keep forgetting about the Witch, will have to examine that along with the oracle and see what other people are playing.

Any other ideas I missed

It's possible to pull it off with the inquisitor, summoner, or magus classes, as well, but they all face the same uphill problem as the bard in terms of spell progression. So, you won't qualify until 8th level. That said, they're probably the most potent combat options remaining.

You might also want to consult the new Player's Companion book for Varisia: Birthplace of Legends as it's got some advice on what kinds of feats, skills, etc. to select to build a thematically-appropriate Harrower/fortune teller from that country. Since Varisians travel to and from Ustalav, the info there would fit the Carrion Crown AP just as easily as the Curse of the Crimson Throne AP.

Sovereign Court

Yeah the Varisia book is where I got the idea from

Have you seen the awesome Deadly Dealer feat in there that allows you to use Harrow cards a magic infused weapons?

Mrs. Bell recently played a harrower in CoCT. She started off as an urban druid with the Knowledge domain. Conceptually worked very well. Ignore what some posters say about urban druids sucking--I can tell you from actual play experience over levels 1-15 that was not the case. As a druid you can take your 1st level of harrower at level 6.

Sovereign Court

Druids are the last class I will play, just a personal preference, but thanks for the advise.

And yes I am aware of the deadly dealer feat, I put it in my original post

Dark Archive

I recommend the Witch Archetype Cartomancer as it gives a Harrow deck at level one instead of a familiar, and it gives you the deadly dealer feat at level 2 granted you loose your second level Hex for it but that is ok because if it is that important the extra hex feat can be taken to replace it! :D

I also recommend the Harrows Chosen trait as it gives you a family harrow deck that gives you some really nice bonuses.

Was it really necessary to necro a 2 year old thread? The OPs campaign is likely well beyond the point where such advice would be relevant.

I guess him putting in a helpful post to assist future searches along the same idea was as necessary as you being a sarcastic idiot. Only I would rather have his helpful posts then your pointless ones.

Scarab Sages

This thread actually helped me out. I'm going the bard route right now, but I might be able to snag a re-build. Does anyone have any additional insights to offer?

I just stepped down as DM in a lv 7 campaign. PC is taking over. I'm going the Witch cartomancer route.

Thanks for NECRO advise!!!!

Check out the Elfstar the Dancing Queen build, for a kapenia dancer magus with bladed scarf.

Shadow Lodge

We're starting up Carrion Crown soon and I'm going to play a Varisian Fortune Teller styled character. I'm waffling between Shaman or Witch and if I go to Witch, considering Cartomancer.

Liberty's Edge

I hadn't even considered a witch as a base for a harrower thanks for the tip!

Shadow Lodge

A witch loses out on hexes, etc. but other than that, it's a good base for the Harrower. Use some of your early feats for Extra Hex!
