To Float a Building - or, Cubic Math-Fu Challenge!

Advice

Scarab Sages

So, I need to float a building. How? My cubic Math-Fu is regrettably weak. I was thinking lots of casters with Levitate and Permanency. Wands of Levitate with prepared Permanency's?

The Building:
The base is 100x100. It will have 5 stories and four, 30 ft. tall spire-towers (one on each corner). In the center will be a 50 ft. Tower. I'm thinking Hindu temple style architecture where the towers compliment each other and give the impression of a single structure instead of a base structure with separate towers.

Will be made of Granite (170lb/cu. ft.). I'm not sure how heavy this will be, which is my main problem. I have many, many spell casters at my disposal and funds as this is a group effort from several thousand beings, but this has got to weigh hundreds if not thousands of tons.

So, how would you all float something like this to a height of 150 ft. at the base?

Just cast wish. :)

The rough calculation would be along the lines of:

Levitate at 3rd level will levitate 300lb. Roughly, that is 2 cubic feet of granite per casting (1.76ish, but we are being rough).

100ft x 100 ft x 50 ft (5 stories at 10ft a story) = 500,000 cubic feet

Assuming that 10% of the volume is actual granite, that would be 50,000 cubic feet of granite.

We are at roughly 25,000 castings of Levitate at 3rd level. Towers haven't been included yet.

Seriously, just cast wish, or an appropriately researched 9th level spell (Levitate Building?)

You should have the PCs go on an epic quest for the all-mighty Hand Wave! A one-use item with which they can permanently levitate any building they chose.

If you decide on the hand wave option you might consider getting a non-magical option. To keep the GM from crashing your city with one mage's disjunction.

There was a type of rock form Monte Cook's Ptolus city setting.
The basic idea behind this stuff was a negative weight rock.
You could counter balance other materials with this stuff and it would become weight neutral.
So going off the idea of a massive deposit of this anti-rock, build a gigantic base out of the stuff and secure the entire city to the ground with anchors.
Power could be based off wind and when you want to move the city unfurl sails.

short of a GM handwave the task of floating a building of that size is daunting....

i cant think of a way that is supported in the RAW rules to do this as levitate is not viable for permenacy. (unless your GM has stated you could do this)

short of a wish spell or as stated before a specificly researched spell made specificly with this function in mind the almighty handwave is the option...

now ideas that can help with the handwaving would be large ammounts of resources poured into the researching of a spell for this or the crafting of several magic items to perform the task.

course its all up to your GM with this... sorry wish i could of helped more.

or look in the Stronghold builder's guide for a list on flying buildings by room.

Stronghold Builder's Guidebook has the details you're looking for.

Eight castings of Reverse Gravity by a 13th L caster would be enough to raise a slab 100' x 100' x 10' thick. Just float the building's foundation and assume the force of the reversed gravity plus the structural integrity of the foundation will keep the rest of the building aloft.

Alternatively, just treat the entire structure as one whopping great wondrous item, and then you don't need to worry about how many castings are needed, just list the appropriate spells in the construction requirements.

Wouldnt exactly half of the building have to be reverse gravity'd to prevent the foundation from falling up too far?

And I'm not sure I get how one would "craft" a wonderous item that large. Mechanicly or fluff-ly.

Crafting a wondrous item that large would involve lots of builders and the wizard walking around and imbuing each section of foundation as it was put down.

If you are building a wondrous item, it might as well be something small like an orb that goes into the city hall.
