A belated welcome to you mogwen!

I just thought you should all know I am making beef stew and it smells awesome.

In other news, my workplace (part of a university) has had a bunch of seminars on diversity in the workplace and encouraging and accepting diversity, and there's been a bunch of sessions on LGTB issues (per their own lettering), especially same sex marriage and supporting it. So cool.

Funfunfun.

The Exchange

I was in Alaska. Revillagigedo Island. Ketchikan for the rest of you. Enjoyed hiking Tongass National Forest. Loved it. Would go back but not in cards as yet. Saw lots of black bears, deer and eagles. Have a friend up there, ironically neither of us were "out". He is out and proud now. Me? Only to a few officially. Quite a few just assume. ;-)

Yes,important issue!

I'm french and,at last,we're in the last part of the legislative process for same-sex marriage,What french politics called "marriage for everyone" which opens at the same time the rights for adoption,it's been a harsh battle between the conservatives and the socialist party those last month but by june I think it will be done.
It's strange cause we've been one of the first countries in europe to authorize same-sex partnership, yet we're one of the last to accept marriage,as if being innovative 14 years ago had made us reluctant then(the fact that the conservatives ruled the country did'nt help, either!).
The battle has been marked by the raise of homophobics and overreligious behaviours but, hey,we knew that was going to happen like 14 years ago!
It's both strange and great to be part of this, cause we hoped it would happen for such a long time but now,it's no longer a pious dream,in a few months the law will be here, the first unions will be taking place and it will be really difficult for the conservatives to unmake,in fact almost impossible, except if the nationalist party wins the next elections(pretty unlikely, imo, but with the actual financial and social crisis you never know),but then it's not the only thing we'll have to worry about!

Here in Poland conservative attempts to prevent anything close to same-sex marriage lead to shooting down domestic partnership reforms hurting homosexual and heterosexual couples alike.

Have I said *sigh* already?

(not that I, as persistent single, am personally interested in domestic partnership, but I'd prefer progress to backwardness...)

On the same-sex marriage front, this is likely to be an interesting year in the US. Some major cases are coming before the Supreme Court that could have a huge impact when those decisions come out (probably in June).

One possibility (in the case regarding California's Proposition 8) could be a sweeping legalization of same sex marriage in the entire country. I find that outcome somewhat unlikely, but federal recognition of same sex marriages performed by the states (overturning portions of the Defense of Marriage Act) is rather likely. Stay tuned!

At least the conversation is trying to be started. That's the first step. There've been people shooting down attempts in the U.S. until only just now it's starting to pass in a number of states--but there had to be talk about it and it had to be brought into the public view a number of times--AND WILL KEEP NEEDING TO DO SO--for progress to happen.

Welcome, and good luck, good luck! A good friend of mine is visiting Paris now, and has been joining the manifestations in support. (She may also have ulterior motives, like meeting the queer women of France, but still!)

Well,thank you Judy and freehold!
I think we only needed enlightened people in charge and I tend to think that french people were prepared to that, even more so than french politics that have always been a little shy on the subject!
During the 2 weeks of discussions at the parlement,I was pleased to hear politics saying that not allowing same-sex marriage was like making an apartheid, preventing a substantial part of the population from having the same rights as the rest.It was more interesting than hearing the conservatives saying that gay marriage would open the doors to polygamy and incestuous weddings(they just forgot the part about the doors of Hell that open wide and the days of judgement, much more visual, much more blockbuster to me!).
And Judy,I hope your friend managed to meet a few girls from Paris, tthe few I know are good girls!

OT: I can at least share this:

Spoiler:

Resurrection Stew

1 lb or more of beef cubes (bison cubes would also work)
1 can Brewer's Art Resurrection (or other medium bodied ale)
oil for cooking, such as canola or olive
1 box vegetable or beef stock
1 yellow onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, diced
2 carrots, sliced
1 lg. parsnip, sliced
1 turnip sliced
1 pint to 1 quart button mushrooms, cleaned and cut into large chunks (kept whole if quite small)
1/3 to 1/2 cup barley
1 bay leaf
1-3 teaspoons herbes de provence
salt and pepper to taste
Flour
Butter

Pat beef dry and toss in a paper bag with flour, salt, and pepper. Heat oil in a pan. Brown beef in a large soup pot or dutch oven. Remove from heat and let rest.

Adding oil if needed to the poit, put all vegetables--which of course can include additional vegetables than the ones listed and/or whatever you've got on hand--except mushrooms in pot and stir occasionally as they begin to soften. Add herbs and seasonings and stir some more.

After vegetables have begun to work, re-add beef, then pour in can of ale. (I may have used slightly less than the whole can, as of course I needed to taste it just to be sure it was okay.) Stir, then add stock. If things get too thick and you want it to stay soupy, you may want to add extra stock or water as it cooks.

Bring to boil, then cover and simmer for at *least* an ultimate total of 2 hours (the longer you can simmer, the better). Taste on occasion and add/adjust spices as need be. If there's still foam after cooking awhile (there will be some from the ale at first but it will go away), skim foam off top.

About an hour before serving, add barley.

About 15-20 minutes before serving, take some soft butter (up to a tablespoon or so) and some flour (also up to a tablespoon or so) and mix together thoroughly (I didn't have enough butter so I also added some oil--this is a beurre manie' and is optional but it adds a little extra thickening to the broth.

10 minutes before serving, add the beurre manie' and the mushrooms. Stir very thoroughly to be sure the beurre manie melts properly into the stew and doesn't create lumps.

Of course, it will be even better after sitting awhile and the flavors melding.

Notes: Turned out yummy, but I have been trying to cook with less salt so my results were missing a little oomph and I should have added more herbs to make up for it, but there was still lots of flavor from the ale and the vegetables. Broth had a nice consistency. Adding something tomatoey (paste, canned tomatoes, or even ketchup) would probably add to this as well. Basically it's just bog standard stew that you can variate on as you desire.

Silver Crusade

I haven't tried a beer-based stew. I always make mine with red wine.

Wonder how it would taste if the beef was swapped out for tofu.

Ringtail wrote:

Not great. Tofu doesn't stew well. It's great in soup as a last minute add, but it loses consistency depressingly fast.

Probably better off subbing in some black beans. Or kidney beans.

Silver Crusade

The other issue with tofu in stew is that it does not release any juices when cooked, so the liquid proportions will all be off.

For those who cook with beer, have you tried using homebrew? And if so, would you pour it in dregs and all (mmm, pre-vegemite!) or chuck the dregs like if you were drinking it?

Homebrew? I prefer my stew RAW, versus RAI...no wait jk

Extra firm tofu, browned and tossed in at the last minute before serving would be tasty, methinks.

Yes. All of it. Also some for the cook.

Celestial Healer wrote:

That was my other option but I didn't want to open a whole bottle of wine to cook with when I only had myself to feed (I can't drink a bottle of wine on my own, especially red as the tannins curb my appetite). Probably would have done a bourgignon sort of thing if I did.

The beer works really well, and is also great for a pot roast. It's a different flavor but makes it nice and hearty.

Ringtail wrote:

I agree with the others the tofu probably wouldn't quite work, especially since you want it to simmer awhile. If I used beans, I would use white myself (fresh or dried and then soaked so they don't get mushy) for this but any would work. Actually black would also, and if you add a can of tomatoes that would especially be nice.

I agree with Lilith; if you really wanted to try tofu, what I'd do is probably cook it separately--bake or pan-fry with some tamari maybe--and then add at the very end.

It would also just be fine as a vegetable soup. The barley is hearty enough. Or come to think of it, you could also add some quinoa for protein as well.

I haven't tried homebrew. I would at least consider chucking it all in and see how it works, but then when you skim the fat off the top toward the end, skim off any hooch-beer-goop at the same time.

wow this thread is long..either a lot of [you] gay RPGers out there or people frequenting this thread regularly.

and I think I saw something about gay characters...if you want that just convert Kevin Sorbo's Hercules and his sidekick...quite possibly the gayest fantasy characters in the history of mankind. Like Perez Hilton in a pink speedo would be telling those two to tone it down.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Not just gay RPGers, but also bisexual, queer, genderqueer, transgendered... the spectrum goes on.

While Hercules was campy and there was some (amusing) homoerotic subtext, to my knowledge Herc and Iolaus only had romantic liaisons with women. People read into it what they like, but formally and officially the writers would not establish them as gay. To me a positive example of a LGTBQ character would have to start with the writers canonically establishing, acknowledging, and supporting the character's sexuality, such as Tara (a lesbian) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Captain Jack (pansexual) from Doctor Who.

Although talking of the Herc-Xena-verse and LGTBQ issues, I always liked the episode of Xena where the winner of the women's beauty contest was a man. It was a silly episode on the surface but beneath was a fascinating commentary both on gender issues and social gender construction.

Y'know, I can't think of a single undoubtedly homosexual hero-character in any of my fantasy books - plenty of queer ones (Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman's [those two are married to each other, incidentally] The Fall of the Kings has the highest BPP [buggerings per page] number in anything I've read, but at least one of them seems just as happy to go after women; and the hero in Jacqueline Carey's second Kushiel-trilogy may not show any real interest in other men, but that's very much a case of having had bad things happen to him as a child, not a, "Men? No way!" thing).

Hmm... may have to gender-flip the heroines of the thing I'm trying to outline myself - except I want a female d'Artagnan!

Silver Crusade

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I recommend the Last Herald Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey for some fun high fantasy stuff with an unambiguously gay hero. For something a bit grittier, there is The Cold Commands by Richard Morgan and its sequel.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Last Herald Mage is pretty good, IIRC (although the last time I read it I was a teen). It actually does get pretty dark sometimes too--"fun" isn't actually what I'd call it. Mercedes Lackey in general has a lot of homosexual and some bisexual characters in her stories.

And I suspect that unless something drastic happens to the way social norms are evolving in the west, there's going to be a lot more stories with heroes that aren't unambigiously heterosexual. Gay secondary characters are already becoming something that's not really worth remarking on, and, to most people I know, at least, a gay, lesbian, or bisexual hero is far from shocking, anymore.

My decidedly asexual hermetic mage was suspected to be closeted homosexual by his cabal members. Especially the one maga who invited him to have sex with her but he declined.

This was party which included transgendered (female-to-male) Euthanatos.
