Gestalt character advice.

Advice

Our GM is running a low-level campaign where he's allowing gestalt characters (without the XP penalty).

Since I just cant stand being like the rest of the party I want to run something other than a figher or magic user or healer. I'm thinking Autolycus from Xena/Hercules tv shows. A staight-up Rogue/Bard seems okay, or Acrobat mix, but I wanted to get advice from those more experienced in the nuances of Pathfinder rules/classes. Mostly played 3.5 myself.

For those not familiar with this character, Autolycus was a braggart and self-claimed "king of thieves" whose mouth, at times, caused him more trouble than he could handle.

I plan on playing the character fairly true to this but more in the role of a thief and distraction to the bad guys. What was that old AD&D class, bladedancer? but with less suck.

Liberty's Edge

Mixing two classes that have so much over lap is generally a bad idea for gestalt. You're better off mixing two classes that complement each other.

Rogue Sneak Attack and Bardic Spells compliment each other nicely. Oh, your blind? Sneak Attack! What's that? I'm invisible? Sneak Attack! Add in the Arcane Strike feat and Bardic Performance...

Have you considered the Antagonize feat, Apostle?

I've not gotten far enough to consider feats yet. Very early in this character's dev. My other character died in our last session so this one is literally something I just thought of today.

Though Celebirty and Buccaneer are starting to get my fancy on Bard side. Still not sure on the Rogue...

Martial artist monk would fit in place of bard. If I remember the series correctly, everyone had at least one level of martial artist :x

EDIT: martial artist has no alignment restriction.

Grand Lodge

I know you're looking to avoid it but a fighter/rouge can make for an amazing character in and out of combat, gives you lots of options especially if you go with two weapon fighting.

I've also played a very fun monk/sorcerer who I ran basically like a ninja, mirror image, invisibility and illusion spells.

I would personally avoid the bard/rouge, mainly because they have too much in common skill/bab/hit point wise. This is purely from a min/max point of view however, a bard/rogue could make for a very potent character if played smart.

I would actually like to have gunslinger and bard, just to give the bard a strong option in combat, but that's going against your concept of 'no fighter and caster combo'

i do like the idea of making a 'gangsta' bard though....

anyways, to contribute to the discussion, fighter might be useful with the tactician archetype because of the extra feats being helpful (and tactician allows you to take skill focus as a bonus feat). inquisitor could be interesting, especially with the heresy inquisition and the heretic archetype. if you hit someone in melee you can use a move action and hide against the rule that you can't hide while being observed. and you get to add your wisdom bonus to some various roguish things, roll 2x and take the best for stealth and the like. the abilities would complement what you're trying to do. you can even stack it with the preacher archetype if you don't like teamwork feats.

I remember Autolycus. He was played by Bruce Campbell. Cheesy facial hair.

There wasn't much magical about him, but he could throw a punch. I would probably go with a Monk Drunken Master Sensei / Rogue Bandit Charlatan to get a similar feel.

Yeah. I'm thinking we need the guy who is a diversion and the face of the group.

As is we have an Indiana Jones Archaeologist (Rogue?/Bard); new guy-Asimar Healer/Cleric thing; Figher/Mage; Sorcerer/Monk; Monk/Something Psionic ; a new guy who's Cleric or Paladin/Barbarian; and then my dead character who was an Asimar Cleric (no gestalt).

So I really like the idea of the one guy who can actually steal things, charm and distract with skill vs fists and magic. Besides, our dm has found ways to create magical dead-zones before...hmm.

I hadn't considered Charlatan, my faulty brain-catalogue was thinking of something different. That my be the ticket for the Rogue side.

Maybe Charlatan/Buccaneer or Burglar/Celebrity.

And if you recall BC as Autolycus, then you prolly remember Briscoe County Jr. Ah that 90's action schlock...I miss thee.

I second the Fighter/Rogue idea. Your a rogue with D10 HP, Full BAB, and all the feats you can stomach...

If not that then Rogue/Ranger ... Still have D10 HP, Full BAB, and your feats come from your combat style... and you get a pet and minor casting.

Thats at least my opinion.

If you are looking at making a nuisance of yourself on the battlefield, I suggest Combat Maneuvers. The Lore Warden fighter archetype is the best at getting them done, while an oracle of battle can do the most without provoking AoO (a feat for extra revelation can get them improved "combat maeuver" feats at level 7 without having to do Combat Expertise.) Going for flavor, I would suggest the fighter for extra feats.

Yeah, the old 90's action stuff was good as long as it didn't take itself seriously, which Briscoe County Jr never did.

I think I might go with everyones suggestion and pick Fighter with Rogue and specifically Oterisk's suggestion. LIke the Lore Warden. So a Lore Warden/Charlatan for the moment.

Will keep you posted on this creation.
