Wizard, Hero... Restauranter?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

my group were doing a thought experiment at one point and i figured i'd throw it open to everyone here:
you're a 13th level wizard and a little strapped for cash. you recently learned Magnificent Mansion and picked up the focus, but now you're broke.
So you open up a luxury restaurant. cast Magnificent Mansion and format it as an open space with a lot of tables. Charge 10gp per head (listed price for a banquet) and serve up a 9 course meal per person for up to 156 people (12 per caster level) for a healthy 1540 gp profit per casting (with unseen servants seeing to your customers every need). compare to the 910 for just casting a 7th level spell (on comission). you can pull this off in several towns per day (teleport between towns, your limiting factor is the number of mansions you can cast) and you don't need to hire staff, cook the food or clean up afterwards. the thing is that your theoretical maximum profit goes up every level, while the costs become less segnificant (a 7th level slot means more at 13th level than at 20th).

advertising is easy. cast illusionary script on some burnt-out scrolls and hang them in public places. anyone who fails a will save will have the suggestion of coming to your resteraunt that evening, and bringing the family as well.

so... whatya think?

Just go kill a dragon.

but that's dangerous! ;)

it does sound a tad boring.

perhaps you should be looking into games that start with the word 'sim' :P

is there a rule somewhere that says i can't try and pad my pockets during down time?

not as far as i know.

but hey, if you are doing it maybe a bunch of other wizards take up the idea and the competition causes prices to drop.

maybe they thought of it like 50 years ago, and dinners at a magnificent mansion are now a dime a dozen.

there is a bunch of ways to 'break' the economy using magic. that doesnt mean you should :)

but if your GM is into it, then why not?

Seems fine to me.

At the end of a week of doing this, you make your Profession: Restaraunteur check and that's what you make. The rest of the profit goes to feed the invisible forces of magic who are currently backing you.

that just gave me a terrible, terrible idea. use this as a weapon to kill off an enemy nation's economy before invading. have some kind of permit required to cast high-level magic in your home kingdom, so that you can legally arrest any forein wizard who tries to retaliate...

St00ji, congratulations. you just weaponised Magnificent Mansion.

That is a great idea. It would attract thieves, rivals and the local occupy protesters but a great idea none the less. That is something to suggest the next time the campaign has down time for an extended period between adventures. Check the rules see if you can cast it several times and spread them out over several city districts. Hook up with a few bards and start a real red velvet rope experience charge a lot more money.

Sczarni

remember, not many people can afford the 10 GP per head for a family You need to be in cities where you can gfill your 156 seats. Does the Mansion include the silverware and plates? If not you need to pay for those and store them somewhere, so you most likely would need a handy haversack or bag of holding just for this side business, and still be able to make a profit.

it doesn't specify whether you get silverwear ect but it is implied by the discription and the focus components (one of which is a silver spoon). as the place is extradimentional it's resistant to eavesdropping and all but the most inovative theves (and seriously, would you want to steal from a guy who can create his own demiplane when your only exit other than powerful magic is a door he can close and lock with a thought?). as far as who can afford it... you just need to advertise in the right places. a few nobles, their favored squires, and the people they want to impress... it adds up pretty quickly. also, it lasts 26 hours per casting at 13th level so there's no rush for customers to all arrive at once.

By the implications of spells, wizards after level 9 or so participate in the games of "encounters" and "money" only out of polite consideration to the GM and other players. Finding a new way to make cartloads of gold at level 13 doesn't really change anything.

Note that pcs sell stuff for half buy value, so 770 gp if you get a full house - which is in no way guaranteed.

I have the image of a noble husband and wife discussing dinner . . .

"So dear where shall we eat tonight."

"What, why aren't we eating at home?"
"The cooks still sick."
"Oh . . . how about that Fueldrops resturant you liked so much?"
"I'm afraid its in Linnorn tonight."
"Oh well that's deuced inconvenient perhaps that Tian felllow's we went to last month its not as private but at least you know it'll be in town and not on another continent when you decide to eat out."
