Juggler's Kit Knives

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

The juggler's kit from the Adventurer's Armory states that: "A juggler's kit includes multiple sets of well-balanced objects, such as balls, knives, etc." The focus of my question is on the knives as one of my players recently purchased one for his rogue and brought the question forward to me.

How many knives are included in the juggler's kit and what are their stats? At the time, I ruled the stats to be exactly the same as the dagger and that there were three knives in the kit. Is there anywhere that has specifically addressed this? If so and/or if not, what do you all think?

Well first no there is no "real" anwser.

However I am a juggler and use knives so I can give some real world info.

First off most kits come with 3 knives.

Second they are not weighted or shaped correctly for throwing (I do that too)

Also they are not sharp, at all.

On stage we cut through a head of cabbage to show they are sharp. this is not hard, they are dull.

Even the best juggler on earth drops from time to time and would cut the &*%&^$%&^$ out of themselves if they were sharp.

Sadly they are simply a prop.

Knives that can be used for throwing are not weighted correctly for juggling AT ALL.

Hope this helps, any other Q feel free to ask.

Thanks a bunch for the answer. I realized that things would most likely remain vague full on rules-wise but thought to ask anyhow. Thanks for the response.

they might fall under the improvised weapon rules and use daggers to determine the size category and damage

It's a knife shaped hunk of steel, right? the fact that it doesn't come out of the box sharp enough to shave with is kind of irrelevant, since I would presume that anyone who uses a sharpened weapon for combat knows how to put an edge on a blade. Besides, aren't daggers piercing damage?

As an aside, maybe I should look into getting some jugglers knives for throwing practice. I suck with the appropriately balanced ones...

Well no, it is not just a hunk of steel shaped like a knife.

in order to be large enough to juggle (and get the poroper rotation) it has to be MUCH larger then a knife made to fight with or throw.

If that were all metal it would be too heavy to juggle. (yes you may have an 18 str, but its still weighted wrong)

This is what the 2 types look like

As you can see they are not even close, those made for juggling are not all metal.

An for those curious as to the history, I do period juggling as well (go me) and the shape/weight has not changed much in 100s of years.

could you sharpen the juggling knives to have an edge? sure could.

however as i said the best in the world still drop, A LOT also due to some rotations while in practice you will hit the edge.

But as you can see from the pic they would be more slashing then piercing anyway and would be like a small, breakable, self-maiming scimitar at best.

From the URL listed:
"Colors: Black or Natural

Length: 50.8 cm (20 in)

Weight: Approx. 396 gm (14 oz) "

A standard belt dagger has a blade usually between 8 and 12 inches long with a 4 to 6 inch handle, and a weight of 10 - 16 ounces.

Sure the shape is more akin to an eastern style of blade, but I'm pretty sure that if you stab someone with it, they will take damage. I was referencing the P/S/B qualities of RPG weapons. One can ALWAYS stab with a point and slash with an edge.

Besides, we're imposing an unrealistic level of reality on a fantasy game. Frankly, I think that the juggling knife is cooler looking than a standard cross-hilt dagger, and therefore MORE suited to the fantasy realm.

My players goal was to buy a jugglers kit for his thief. The reason being the knives were going to be sharpened by thief for throwing and/or melee. The balls I can only assume would be for traps or something. I've done similar things with my rogue.

I would ask him to make a Craft check to turn the juggling knives from improvised weapons to actual daggers.

Lantern Lodge

That's actually not a bad idea. I think I will do that.

Grand Lodge

The rough and ready trait will allow one to use all components of the juggler's kit as weapons, as long as they have a rank in profession(juggler).

Shadow Lodge

Let him juggle with daggers, and if he fails a perform(juggle) check give him 1d4(1d3 if small) damage as he cuts himself. Increase the DC of what it'd normally be because he is unbalanced knifes (for juggling anyway)
