Now, the real trick is going to be to convince Gary to change the scripts so your avatar changes to the Official RPG Superstar 2012 Jacob avatar every time your post contains the name Jacob.

Nah, he's being generous and often says things for free. But most of the things I've seen him write about RPG design are worth a lot for us aspiring designers.

But what would happen if we referred to both Jacob and smurfs In the same post?

Will I get my first smurf? Not in the preview window, so let's post...

What do people think the twist for round three will be? Your monster must be:

A) small and blue with a white hat?
B) small and green with scales?
C) something that likes eating one of the above?

A redo of the Jacob avatar. Change the color of the dragon to blue and add a white hat.

It seems smurf trumps Jacob...sigh, some things are just hardcoded into the fabric of reality.

the homebrew stuff that we do is world-building. we both stick to published races and classes, but design our own settings (though i've been learning about golarion for this contest, and it seems pretty solid- i may use it next time i run). we'll both throw in a couple of extra feats and some non-standard magic items, but most of what we do is geography, history, religion, politics- and of course designing adventures :)

oh, and
TEST: Jacob

EDIT: lol, sorry jacobs- no avatar switch code yet...

I actually feel surprisingly calm. All my nervous energy was used up in a last minute dash to the line last night. I thought I'd be obsessing about what could have improved my entry but I feel like a line has been drawn under it. Life is all about monsters now.

The difference this round is, you know your name is going to be up there come Tuesday. We're all still in there for another week at least. I'm going to try not to stress and just enjoy it.

We'll see how I feel when the first critiques come in...

I'm way too busy practicing monster-building to have jitters and worries. I've never made a custom monster in my life, so I need all the practice I can get.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 8 aka nate lange

does anyone know if we're going to get a bestiary 3 if we make next round? i know they said they'd give you an ISWG for this round if you didn't have it- i did have it so that didn't effect me, but i don't have bestiary 3 and can't help but worry that i may come up with a monster too similar to something in there... (of course, i guess that's kind of a can of worms if some people don't have the first two either)

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 aka Stormfriend

The only thing that worries me is that I went Gonzo for round 1, when minor formatting issues matter as much as the idea, then safe and sound for the public votng round when the idea matters more than the formatting. Oh well, if I get to round 3 I can turn up the gonzo.

Does any-smurf know how much we can talk about our first round item?

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8

My understanding is that you can talk about your round 1 item till you are blue in the face (pun intended). But from round 2 and onward, you have to wait till voting is over before talking about your item. And better stick to the pre-approved blupr - last year, Leif Clenneon was eliminated for talking too much about his round 2 submission, if I recall correctly.

Indeed stick to the blurb. Talk round 1 til you're a nice smurfy blue if you want but leave off the round 2 talk until voting closes.

I let all of my gaming friends look over my organization for review and last night at our game one of my friends, who GMs, informed that he liked it so much it might be showing up in the near future and that if I wanted to stat out the major players so that they could kill us, I could.

We also had a great quote: "In all the D&D games I have ever been in, I have never been railroaded so literally,"

Chris -- I've been sleeping for crap. Honestly, though, I think it's more excitement. I'm waking up two or three hours early to rush in and look for (non-existant) comments on my item. : /

You know now I'm tempted to dig into spellblights for my Planescape game. I haven't yet read much on them but now my interest is piqued. Your item may see its way into my game too.

**edit** Actually there are a number of items this year that I will add to my available for use lists.

They sat in the night monarch vardo smoking a mixture of sunblossom, bottled time, liquid sunlight, and dustings of darkness while drinking resurgent flame (out of Cayden's cup) and watching a silhouette of the phantasmagoria duke it out with a shadow box. They said something like that when a rules question came up.

Yet I had to argue with the Drow about how it was a terrible idea for him to cast darkness on the guy I (one of the few humans) was going to attack. Seriously, my claim to fame right now is knowing how that spell works and how it screws me over.

Anyway, I'd love to comment on everything but I keep debating on whether I will. It just feels like once I get through half I'll have to do the other half, otherwise it would just be rude (but it reality it would just be lazy).

Hey, now that we're out of the items phase, I want to ask y'all a question: I almost made the spellbreaker gauntlet's per-day function based upon the wearer's Strength modifier ("a number of times per day equal to your Strength modifier"), rather than a flat 3/day. An item I self-rejected before polishing it even had a more complex version: "a number of times per day equal to your highest ability modifier".

The question is: what are your guys' thoughts on having variable uses-per-day like that? I personally feel like it allows the item to "grow" with the character more organically and allows the item to retain some usefulness at higher levels.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9 aka motteditor

James, I don't mind the idea if it's something homebrewed, but I think the judges have rightly called out such design ideas for making pricing a lot more difficult. It's a far more valuable item in the hands of a stronger character.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 8 aka nate lange

i think that's one of those ideas that always sounds good in theory but in reality it makes the item almost impossible to price. it also makes items work better for characters who are already benefitting from having a higher stat (which i've seen the judges criticize). imho- the item creation rules include guidlines for pricing based on charges per day, it wouldn't be too difficult to calculate the cost to commission a friendly crafter to upgrade it for more uses.

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

I like to play and GM about equally, but I can usually only fit one gaming night into my schedule each week. A good run of home games has meant I'm still chasing my second star as a Pathfinder Society GM.

I'm definitely feeling some anxiety over having so many people looking at my writing, but it's also encouraging to think that somewhere out there, someone is probably going to adapt my ideas for their home game. I know I already have plans for some of this year's wondrous items, and I'm especially looking forward to seeing what pops out of the monster round.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 , Dedicated Voter Season 8 aka artofcheatery

James, best way to think of it is not to look at it from the point of view of the ogre fighter that would rule with it with his high Strength, but the goblin adept that benefits from it more with the 3/day. Which looks more awesome?

Of course, it would give the goblin a huge ego.
-Xander

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 , Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8 aka FaxCelestis

Good point. I think, because of that, "highest ability modifier" has better universal applicability rather than specifying a single stat. And true, it would be a pain to price correctly. One could go with "a number of times per day equal to your Strength modifier, or three times per day, whichever is more", but that's a lot of words for something that's probably simpler at just "three times per day".

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8

My first year entry was a helmet which gave you a free Dazzling Display-like effect whenever you hit with a charge. It had a number of daily uses equal to your ranks in Intimidate. That design choice did not resonate well with the judges, it was later evident from the critique thread. I think you made the right choice, James.

Yup, ditto. Times per day is the easiest to price and understand, and also makes the items more useful for a whole range of characters. :)

On a second note, I just reread my organization, and I feel relieved that it's actually pretty interesting (but really lore-heavy. It might be Greek to people not familiar with the setting. :/). I was in such a state when I submitted it that I wasn't sure until now.

Time will tell!

It occurred to me that they could make each round anonymous until voting is over. I wonder how that would affect the outcomes?

PS: I really like all you guys! It feels good to be rubbing elbows with such a cool group. :D

My dragon shaman PC has a morning star with a stunning weapon special ability from the MiC, and it is usable once per day, a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier....and the Save DC is 10 + 1/2 the wielder's level + his Charisma modifier, so it DOES grow with the character. And it only cost a +1 to the weapon's price. I think it would be really useful for a paladin or cavalier, but most other melee types use Charisma as a dump stat, it seems.

Popularity is the American Idol portion of RPG Superstar. They want to find someone that can resonate with the community. The person may become a closer part of the Paizo family and they may not want a person that is generally unliked or just a meanie. I think anonymity may lead to a better subjective community review of the submission, but personality can sell goods.
