There can be only One!: Dnd going down?

Other RPGs

gamers and speculators,

I was reading enworld today and they said a whole bunch of dnders were fired. I know Baker is gone. Not sure if I read it right but Monte Cooks name came up as well. What can all this mean? Is it just their usual layoffs or is dnd going down the tube? I'm thinking this because some of those names seem like big gamer names to me.

maybe the end is near,

Frog God Games

Nah. They've been laying people off for the holidays for quite a few years now.

Christmas layoffs are de rigeur over at Hasbro. Very unfortunate, no matter folks feelings in 4ed, there are some excellent designers and writers all up in there.

Monte Cook was giving condolences to those who got laid off by WotC. I know that several of the leads of D&D are leaving, but they're getting replaced by other WotC people from place like Magic the Gathering etc.

I know that Tom LaPalle (Who was the lead Developer for MTG for a while) will be leading the Charge for D&D for a while. This is the first I've heard of anual lay-offs, but honestly, WotC is known to shuffle its talent around, and only letting people go when they're given orders by Hasbro or the person wants to leave.

Silver Crusade

That is what they call Christmas Vacation.

Cook was giving condolences? I swear I saw that he got the axe to. I was really surprised to see Baker get it... I just got one of his games last year. Not that I liked it that much.

Sovereign Court

Doubt they'd fire him considering the rumor going around is that he's working on 5th edition for them.

Whew, wow. Guess there's just not that many left now. New edition or not, I'd say they're definitely re-tooling the brand.

They'll rehire I'm sure, once the holidays are over they will hopefully ask them back.

Common in a lot of industries, in my experience (I know there was celebration when it was announced enough people were retiring that we wouldn't have lay offs this year.)

My company just offered early retirement to about 1/3 the company.

Only 5 people took them up on it, so I've taken to keeping a "go box" just in case.

On the bright side, I'd have plenty of time to devote to RPG Superstar...

guys, I may be wrong about Cook getting the axe but check out the second post here:

the original 4th crew looks likes its almost gone. Releases are slowing down as well. How many people are going to be left working on that thing?

Mearls, Cook and Cordell are all that's left I think.

that's insane. You can't have that few of people working on the thing and succeed. I didn't think I'd see this day coming but maybe it's almost here.

That, and he just moved back to the Seattle area. Relocating a guy just to axe him once he gets there would be very bad form.
