Witch with a wolf companion?

Advice

Shadow Lodge

I am running a new group and one of the players really wants to play a gnome witch. However, she wants to have a wolf companion that she can ride later on to fit with her back story. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I would probably just make it an archetype. Drop the 1st, 4th, 8th, and 16th level hexes and give her an animal companion.

Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan)

But the Sylvan bloodline replaces the Bloodline Arcana as well as the 1st level bloodline power, and the Eldritch Heritage feat gives you the power only.

Not sure that matters. The animal companion is listed as a 1st level bloodline power (which eldritch heritage grants). I don't see why that wouldn't work.

This is a good idea. Also if she is just planning to use the animal companion to ride and not attack you could make a feat where you can get a larger non-combat familiar (or just use improved familiar to let her have a standard wolf).

Or you could allow it as an Improved Familiar at 3rd or 7th level. Maybe small (young template) at 3 increasing to medium at 7th? (5th maybe but thats probably too soon)
Familiar is alot weaker than an AC and in case of the witch a dead familiar is a serious problem, so having it as a medium animal you ride into battle is quite the danger there, so I don't see a balance issue there.

Problem with Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan) is that Sylvan is an sorcerer archetype of the Fey bloodline. Taking Eldritch Heritage (Fey) is not a problem, and grants you Laughing Touch. Applying Sylvan to it does not work since you don't have a Bloodline Arcana to replace, even though you have Laughing Touch.

GM may allow it, but I don't think so. *Maybe* (houserule though) allow it if the witch takes Eldritch Heritage twice, once for Fey and then for Sylvan or something. Twice the feat tax would probably justify an ability that replaces two abilities.
Would have to be 5th level before that's all done then, Skill Focus at 1st, Fey at 3rd, Sylvan at 5th. Not sure it's worth it honestly.

Otherwise... just take a normal wolf pet/mount and have the witch handle and train it with handle animal and so. Of course it will stay at 2 HD forever.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Does she have to be magically linked? She could just have a non-magical wolf, like people have horses. If it's thematic, I see no reason to not let her have a wolf.

The Horse is listed at the same level of Summon Nature's Ally (II) as the Wolf, so just let her buy one as a special case?

Thanks for the ideas all! I will let her read this thread.

Cheers!
