While she saw visions early (so she claims), she began her historical march at 16, ending with her capture at 18 and death at 19. She was fiercely loyal, and actually escaped her capture by jumping out of a 70 foot tower into a moat. Brave, loyal, loved, and really, really stupid... the perfect 7 int 7 Wis pally :).
. . .who should have put one skill rank into swim apparently.

Joan of Arc was 16, ya perve :).
But yeah, intelligence and wisdom are not exactly things I would see going on in the heads of the people that led crusades. And 7 isn't mentally handicapped, just below average (70 IQ or so).
70 IQ is average?
Nope - 100 is average.
Remember the guy from Aliens 3 who was the assistant of the prison commandant. He had an IQ of 85 and the prisoners (not themselves the bright lights of humanity) used to take the piss out of him for being dumb.
Unfair, but one of the ugly little aspects of humanity.
Wiki has (from various pages) the following to be said about IQ 70.
"Borderline intellectual functioning is a categorization of intelligence wherein a person has below average cognitive ability (an IQ of 71–85), but the deficit is not as severe as mental retardation (70 or below).
Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors.
Both adults and children with mental retardation may also exhibit some or all of the following characteristics:
Delays in oral language development
Deficits in memory skills
Difficulty learning social rules
Difficulty with problem solving skills
Delays in the development of adaptive behaviors such as self-help or self-care skills
Lack of social inhibitors"
I challenge anyone to roleplay a charismatic and enjoyable Paladin character whilst grappling roleplaying within these restrictions. He'd be an ex-Paladin or fallen Paladin within a few sessions....
As for the Crusades - well let's just say the extreme fanatacism some indulged in (on both sides) is a form of madness which affects the stupid or the brilliant....
