GM Todd's Jade Regent PbP Recruitment

Gamer Connection

I'm considering starting a PBP Jade Regent Adventure. I have two other campaigns running and life may or may not get increasingly busy over the next several weeks. But, I'm incredibly intrigued by the new AP and think there's a lot of richness in the adventure and possibilities for the caravan aspects.

Some Things You Should Know:

I am only selecting four players for this campaign. Probably. It kills me to narrow it down like that, as I know there will be some incredible applications. But I want to make the AP somewhat challenging and that's much easier with a smaller party. (I can almost guarantee I'll break this stipulation.)

To start, please download the Jade Regent Player's Guide if you haven't already. The information therein is critical in understanding the adventure and crafting an appropriate backstory for your character.

Role playing is more important to me than roll playing. I play for stories more than mechanics. That said, this is a traditional AP so completely unoptimized characters aren't really appropriate. But don't feel the need to eek out every point possible from your build.

Like other GMs, I'd like at least one post per day from the players - including weekends. And, of course, if you're going to be away, just let the group know. Depending on how long you're gone, you may need to be ok with the GM or a fellow player taking over your character until your return.

Finally, maps and other relevant documents will be uploaded to Dropbox. This is a friendly and easy way to share the files across multiple platforms.

My GM Quirks:

I place a high value on diversity in race and classes.
I have a particular soft spot for Monks.
I am a grammar snob. While improperly using a gerund isn't grounds for disqualification, proper use will earn you bonus points.

Character Creation:

1) 20-Point Buy, 1st Level
2) Core races only

3) Three traits. It is required that you pick one from the campaign traits.

4) No evil characters.

5) Max HP at first level (roll or average thereafter).
6) Max starting gold
7) Archetype stacking is allowed, assuming the bonuses don't overlap. Also, I'll be looking for some story-basis or flavor-basis for your archetype choices. If you're just looking to game the system, you're out.

How To Apply
As I'm still trying to determine whether or not I will run this game (I totally will), I don't want a lot of people to devote a lot of time to roleplaying their characters. Instead, I will post the now-traditional questions and ask that you respond to them in character.

I also ask that you have a mostly completed character profile that I can look at. It doesn't have to be completely finished at all, but I want to get an idea of what you're trying to do with your character - not just that you're a human cleric.

The Questions
1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
2. Which NPC are you connected to?
3. How would you describe your personality?
4. What will your character contribute to the group?
5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
6. What is your day job?

I will hold recruitment until I feel like I have enough players to choose from or next Tuesday - whichever comes first.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Definitely interested.

Will come up with a concept and sheet tonight.

I'll get your questions answered in character shortly, but there's a lot here already.

Interested

But I have a few counter questions:
1) Are their any Pathfinder books, that are allowed/disallowed (for classes, feats, etc)
2) "I place a high value on diversity in race and classes." and "Core races only." these are in contradiction.
So which is it?
3) If a player plays a character with low int and wisdom and has poor grammar, would you be cheesed at the poor grammar or happy at the role-play?

So which is it?

He simply wants the applicants to be varied - so you don't have 13 human applicants, 2 elves and 1 gnome, no half-orcs, no gnomes...

That's what I think he meant.

I'll answer the questions soon, But here's Jaska, an inquisitor of Desna.

My answers to your questions.

1. Not that I'm aware of.
2. I don't really want a party of all humans - I like having some racial diversity in my parties.
3. I don't think so, no. But it better be dang obvious that's what the character is doing.

EDIT: NINJA'ed. Which is appropriate for this AP.

Interested. Thinking a human or elven monk. Probably martial artist and likely another as well. Definitely getting styles. May go master of many styles. Friend of amiekos who learned to fight in her tavern. In character stuff later, I'm at work now.

EDIT: Opinion on synthesist? Allowed/disallowed? Like or hate? I'd kinda like to do an inevitable bonded synthesist halfling or gnome.

The Questions:

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
Local.
2. Which NPC are you connected to?
Ameiko, she is Harun's older sister and the only family he has left.
3. How would you describe your personality?
Curious and charming. He cares for his sister and sometimes worries about her, since she doesn't talk about her adventuring days. He's a teenage boy and thinks he's a man.
4. What will your character contribute to the group?
A bit of a party face and a team member to help deal damage.
5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
Rogue knife master and unarmed fighter. Looking to try out monk-type without the monk class. I'm thinking that the sneak attack damage will make up for the lack on monk unarmed strike damage.
6. What is your day job?
Harun helps out Bethana at the The Rusty Dragon. Ameiko also has him working with Jurt, at the smithy, when he has time away from the Inn, to keep him out of trouble.

If it's alright with you, I wish to refrain from posting with the alias right away, and will eventually post the WIP of the character in this profile. I will be submitting one character - but will apply with 2 different classes, to better fill the needs of the party: either a fighter with the two-weapon warrior archetype, or a wizard (maybe with spellslinger archetype). If the spellslinger is too restrictive (or you prefer no firearms), I can change to another arcane caster, no worries.

I haven't quite decided on a name yet.

The Questions:

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
Fighter
Sandpoint was not always my home. I was born in the Hold of Belkzen, to a tribe in the Mindspin Mountains. The chieftain, my mother, was fiercely overprotective. She defied her tribe's teachings. I was to be the successor, and was taught and instructed in the way of the orcish double axe; a style that only those of full blood were meant to wield. When I was to perform the rite of passage, the tribe rebelled. The chieftain was murdered in cold blood, and I scarcely managed to flee with my life.

I fled to Magnimar. I resolved to cast away the tainted teachings that had gotten my only... family... murdered. And I did. I learnt how to write, and how to speak. I practiced until the words would roll off my tongue, like music to your ears. I took to manners, to being polite, to distance myself from the savagery of my blood. But I kept my namesake. I kept my weapon, and my tradition.

I eventually decided to join a caravan, to satisfy my wanderlust. Magnimar is quiet and welcome, but so dreadfully boring. The caravan was run by a Sandru Vhiski. I resolved to travel with the man, and grew to... hm. Yes. I eventually decided to settle down in Sandpoint. To enjoy the ocean.

Yes. The ocean.

Spellslinger
Sandpoint was not always my home. I was born in the Hold of Belkzen, to a tribe in the Mindspin Mountains. The chieftain, my mother, was fiercely overprotective. She defied her tribe's teachings.I was to be the successor, and was taught and instructed in a rare and different style of wizardry, one which focused on the mysterious black powder; a style that only those of full blood were meant to wield. When I was to perform the rite of passage, the tribe rebelled. The chieftain was murdered in cold blood, and I scarcely managed to flee with my life.

I fled to Magnimar. I resolved to cast away the tainted teachings that had gotten my only... family... murdered. And I did. I knew how to write the arcane, and my own savage tongue to be sure, but not how to speak the common tongue. It was a simple process, yet I practiced and practiced until the words would roll off my tongue, like music to your ears. I took to manners, to being polite, to distance myself from the savagery of my blood. But I kept my namesake. I kept my spellbook, I kept this artifact, and I kept my tradition.

Yes. The ocean.

2. Which NPC are you connected to?

I must admit I have a great... affection to Sandru. There is something about the way he... hm. Yes. He is a sly man, with a gleam in his eye that you cannot help but notice. And he welcomed me to join his travels. He has always been exceptional company. It wasn't easy for me to explain to him that I wished for a slightly more ... intense lifestyle. Though I have no doubt he could... hm. Yes.

Trait: Caravan Guard

3. How would you describe your personality?

I might not be what you could consider... humble. I like to think of myself as one of sound mind, and somewhat interesting. I have little time for nonsense, though I could stand to laugh more. And smile more. I enjoy good company, and a good discussion, so long as it is productive. If I were to be less eloquent, mayhap you could consider 'determined' and 'serious' as adequate descriptive terms, for all its worth as logical positive and negative extremes.

4. What will your character contribute to the group?

As a fighter, a light front-line melee with emphasis on damage; also ranged damage through his longbow. As a wizard, utility, support and damage through spells, knowledge through skills. Personality-wise, he will be a voice of reason, and will be relentless in his determination to keep the party going.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?

As a fighter, he will be progressing into two-weapon fighting. I will likely pick up Combat Expertise so I can get the manoeuvre feats to support other melee characters (if any). The goal is to put emphasis on his ancestral fighting style, which is ... a lot of spinning. A mobile, agile, hard-hitting, hard to hit dervish of blades.

As a spellslinger, having 4 opposed schools does hamper the versatility somewhat, but in return it gives more consistent out-of-spellcasting damage. Spell selection will vary heavily on what is necessary - but likely some damage and utility. May focus on necromancy as well - the debuffing aspects of it.

I will very likely go for many roleplaying skills. Profession: Chef, Profession: Librarian, ect., for the flavour.

6. What is your day job?

I work as a librarian at Sandpoint's library. Well, it isn't quite as magnificent a library as the one in Magnimar, but I enjoy tending to its books. During the eves, I occasionally help the fishermen of Sandpoint, or Bethana at the Rusty Dragon with the cooking. I must admit to enjoying helping the residents of Sandpoint with their tasks.[/b]

Liberty's Edge

Dotting for interest. Thinking some kind of sorcerer.

Patcher:
I'm intrigued by the Spellslinger. I hadn't read that section in the book yet. I'm totally fine with your running with one. I might need your help (and honesty) keeping up with all the things that class can do and the associated penalties. If selected, I would also make sure that guns were supported through loot and merchants in the AP.

Ryuoko:
I don't love the synthetist as a GM. They seem kind of overpowered. But I'm open to seeing what kind of story you could come up with.

Harun:
Who was your father or mother?

Do you have any comments or feedback in general about my application? Would you prefer the fighter or wizard? Is it okay that I apply with 2 different classes for the sake of filling the party slot?

I'll post the sheets shortly - will need to work out the wizard first, the fighter is more or less finished (sans traits).

I like the character concept for both. I'm fine with your applying with both and seeing which fills the party the best. I'm more intrigued by the spellslinger but more comfortable with the fighter, so we'll see which way it goes!

Come to think of it, I would rather play on his very subtle crush on Sandru than being a caravan for him - could I go with the Childhood Crush (Sandru) trait rather than the Caravan guard trait to reflect this?

Liberty's Edge

I've decided I'm going to go with a Halfling Verdant Sorcerer. I'll work it up and post in couple of hours.

Patcher: That's totally fine with me.

Which would you prefer?

1) Human(Ulfen), Fighter (Phalanx)
2) Half-elf, Ninja
3) Half-elf, Monk (Martial Artist)

And a concept that ignores the core race rule, but for RP value

4) Changeling Fighter(Unarmed)

Edit: GM_Todd picks, and I build it.
Do not know if I'll get in, but hey thems the breaks.

Grand Lodge

Dude! You are going to run yourself ragged! ^_^ Best of luck!!!

I would like to present an application for Harold Wainright, a NG Half-Elven Ranger(Infiltrator).

Appearance:
Harold is tall and muscular, with short-cropped black hair. He usually has a few-days growth of beard, and typically goes around in a well-worn explorer’s outfit. His skin is quite tanned, and he is usually surrounded by a faint earthy aroma.

Background:
Harold has no memory of his parents; from what he has been able to piece together, they were part of a small clan of itinerant Varisians, who had the misfortune to fall prey to a roving band of goblins. When the Elven ranger Shalelu came upon the site of the carnage, it was too late to save his family, but Harold was safe and sound, tucked away in a well-concealed crib in one of the caravans.

Realizing the impracticality of caring for an infant herself, Shalelu handed him along to a family whom she knew she could trust, placing him in the care of a (then middle-aged) Varisian woman named Koya, who lived in the settlement of Sandpoint. Harold grew-up well-loved by his adoptive family, and formed strong-friendships with a number of the local residents; in fact, he developed a particular affinity for Ameiko, and her Half-Elven brother, unconsciously sensing that they would be more welcoming to another half-breed such as himself, despite the fact that both were a couple of years older.

However, a few years back, when Goblins attacked the town, and Ameiko's father and brother were killed (under circumstances which are still kept relatively quiet), the bonds of friendship between Ameiko and Harold were strengthened; although she went on to have a brief career as an adventurer, Harold's heart still lay with the town in which he grew-up in, and he stayed behind. He was, nonetheless, inspired and transported by the tales she wove when she returned to town, and he began to take trips of his own, short-range at first, but then further and further afield into the wilds of Varisia, exploring the wonders (and dangers) that the world held.

Harold tends to move around the countryside, doing odd-jobs at the various outlying homesteads, or undertaking scouting missions for Sherrif Hemlock. Gripped by an eternal wanderlust, he never stays in one place for long, although he always returns to Sandpoint, days, or sometimes weeks, later, to catch-up with his close friends, and to trade stories. Naturally shy, he also has a bit of a temper; slow to anger, when he does explode, the results are volcanic. This shames him a great deal, and he makes every effort to keep a lid on it, which serves to accentuate his natural shyness, something which only his close friend Ameiko, and his adoptive mother Koya, are able to penetrate with any great regularity.

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
Harold grew-up in Sandpoint, and feels a strong affinity for the town, even if his inveterate wanderlust causes him to go on roving patrols that take him away from the town for days or weeks at a time. As the AP starts, Harold has been away from Sandpoint for a bit over a week, helping a farmer at one of the outlying farmsteads to deal with a 'Goblin problem' in his barn, and is looking forward to spending some time at the Rusty Dragon, catching-up with his old friends.

2. Which NPC are you connected to?
Harold is tangentially attached to both Koya and Shaleleu, havin6 been rescued as a baby by the latter, and then raised by the former, but the NPC he feels closest to is Ameiko; he grew-up with her and her half-brother, and after her father's and brother's deaths, Harold became closer to her.

3. How would you describe your personality?
Harold is, by nature, quite shy - when amongst a group of people he does not know, he can be quite tight-lipped. However, when coaxed into relaxing by a friend, he can be quite easy-going, and pleasant, company. Harold does not make friends that easily, but is incredibly loyal to those who earn his trust.

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
Harold is a melee-focused character, who is good at getting along in the wild, and can act as a decent guide. He can also be a respectable back-up 'face' character, being trained in both Diplomacy and Intimidate (provided he can overcome his shyness).

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
Straight-class Ranger(Infiltrator).

6. What is your day job?
Harold is employed as a scout by Sheriff Hemlock, helping to keep an eye on Goblin activity in the area. He also moonlights as a hunter, trading skins and meat for supplies at the various farmsteads that he comes across when on patrol.

Let me know what you think :-)

Posted both sheets in my profile. Will work on descriptions and backgrounds next, but they are both WIPs still.

Hello, I'd like to present my character Emilah. Given her backstory she pretty much only works as human though I could see half-elf working too. Though that would make her quite the mix-breed given how I planned her out mechanically.

Emilah Story:
Background: Born to the Lyrune-Quah under auspicious omens, Emilah was the pride of her mother and father. An intelligent child with a strong body and a passion for the hunt. Emilah was always happiest after a good hunt and celebrating with her tribe. However, as she began to grow into a woman, changes were noticed that caused the tribe great concern. While before her hair was solid black streaks of red began to form in her hair and her eyes changed from a light brown to sharp blood red. The shamans of the tribe communed with the spirits of the Lyrune-Quah for a month, attempting all manner of reagents and mystical means to remove the affliction that was changing her body. Sequestered away from her tribe and her family, Emilah began to resent the shamans for her confinement but what truely hurt her was the rejection of her friends and father. She became a taboo to the tribe nearly overnight. A rage she didn't know existed inside of her welled up to the front of her mind and the only thing that kept it in check for a time was her mother, who continued to love her unconditionally and prayed daily that her daughter would be cured. Emilah didn't feel sick, she felt stronger even, quicker, more powerful. Though the shamans tried to hide it, Emilah still heard the whispers behind her back that she was possessed, a demon child who should be banished from the tribe. During the night of a dark moon, she attempted to leave her tent and was stopped by one of the shamans. A months worth of painful emotions finally broke through and in a rage she picked up the old man by his neck and flung him back with a strength she didn't know she posessed. Turning around quickly she grabbed the weapons and supplies she kept in her tent and shouldered her backpack. Stepping back out she yelled at the shaman, "If you do not want me here anymore then I will leave!"

Promptly running out of the camp she set on the road and never looked back. Eventually Emilah made her way far west into the small town of Sandpoint. There at least none of the Shoanti knew her, and she could try to make a new life for herself. Hiring out as a hunter and sometimes guardswoman when Sheriff Hemlock needed the extra help, Emilah tried to make herself fit in and hide the strange features of her hair and eyes. But as the years passed rumors and talk couldn't help but spread and Emilah began to feel the same old resentments of her time with the tribe. That was when she met Ameiko Kaijitsu after returning from a raid on a small goblin camp. Her clothes were covered in blood and her hair a wild mess but Ameiko didn't judge Emilah for her appearance and accepted her as a person. Emilah quickly began to feel a friendship with Ameiko that grew into something more quicker than she knew what to do with it. Emilah began to spend more time at the Rusty Dragon talking with Ameiko whenever she had the chance to do it. The friendship helped Emilah developed with Ameiko and the other inn patrons helped her get through the last few years of her adolesence. Though she has never shared her feelings more than being close friends, Emilah is considered her chances now that she has turned eighteen.

Personality: Emilah carries the superstitions of her people and tries to carry the bearing of fierce dignity her people instilled into her. She doesn't take things lying down if they offend her. Emilah enjoys strong drinks and feasts with friends and is always willing to help if it involves hunting some beast or the potential of a good fight. However, once a fight has begun, she has problems containing her anger, and it sometimes spills out in a blinding rage she can't control. A flicker of malice shows in her eyes when this happens, as if she is enjoying the bloodshed.

Appearance: Emilah has the deeply tanned skin of the Shoanti people with a strong hunter's body. Her hair is tied back in a pony tail currently with streaks of red running through her hair. Her eyes seem to glow a faint red at night though that is barely noticable. Her arms and legs sport a few scars from her training while her midriff has a score of claw marks along her ribcage. In full battle dress Emilah seems like a walking armory with a greatsword, longspear, and shortbow strapped and crossed on her back. A full quiver at her right hip with a mace strapped against the quiver. While on her belt is lined a row of sharp daggers. On her left and right cheek is a relief tattoo of a wolfs head with the jaw open around her own jaw line.

Jade Regent: Recently Emilah has become bored with the quiet life of Sandpoint. While she has adjusted to village life it has never sat well on her shoulders. She has begun to consider taking jobs that will take her farther away from Sandpoint and into land she has never seen before. Counterpoint to that is her feelings for Ameiko and her desire to stay near the woman, for the friendship if nothing else.

DM Questions:
1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?

I have lived in Sandpoint for a few years now, I don't know if I am considered a local yet, but it has been my home.

2. Which NPC are you connected to? Ameiko Kaijitsu is a friend of mine, and I spend many nights at her Inn. The company of the Rusty Dragon is some of the best in Sandpoint.

3. How would you describe your personality? I'm always up to help a friend and know how to swing a blade with skill. Just don't give me any reason to dislike you and we will get along fine... oh, and don't ask me about my people.

4. What will your character contribute to the group? I'm strong, fit, and able to hunt quite well. Don't expect me to be the most diplomatic person around though.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her? Mechanically I plan on staying barbarian all the way to the end, taking eldritch heritage feats for the draconic bloodline powers for flavor and roleplay purposes.

6. What is your day job? I am a hunter for Sandpoint usually, though I will work with Sheriff Hemlock on occasion if he needs someone tracked down.

Questions:

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?

"I have recently moved to Sandpoint in an effort to learn more about the world outside of the forest. i must admit I find the place a bit trying, but I see more of Shalelu here than at home. I am learning to get along with others as well."

2. Which NPC are you connected to?

"When I was younger, Shalelu saved my life during a battle near my home. I have been forever grateful to her. I wish to get to know her better in this setting otuside of Crying Leaf, and perhaps share in some of the adventures for which she is famous."

3. How would you describe your personality?

"My personality? Well, I suppose I can be a bit abrupt, but it is only due to my nature to always be vigilant. I have little time for frivolous talk. However, in my brief time in Sandpoint, I have learned this tends to provide poor reactions among the other races. I have started to learn to soften my tone a bit."

4. What will your character contribute to the group?

"I have sworn an oath to protect my companions lives and honor. I will do so with my life. I also have some skill training mounts for battle. Should the group require such training, I will gladly spend the time and effort to provide us with strong companions for our battles."

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?

"Shadow and I train every chance we have to achieve greater coordination and skills in battle. We will strive to be the best combination possible in fulfilling our oath to protect our companions"

So far, just planning Cavalier with some cool mobility feats for a powerful lance whirlwind attack later on. I'm looking at the Ultimate combat archetypes and might consider them, but nothing sticks out as must have aft the moment.

6. What is your day job?

"As I said earlier, I have a gift for training horses. I work with them where I can."

Ryuko here. I think I'd actually rather apply with this concept. Leto's a good kid and he didn't get a chance in my last campaign. I'll change the heck oughta his stats and story to fit it, but this should suffice to give you an idea.

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?

I'm just returning to visit some friends, it's been a really long time since I saw the crowd back at the Rusty Dragon in a truly long while.

2. Which NPC are you connected to?

Well I suppose I know just about all of them. Ameiko I've met several times, and she's such a fun girl. Koya practically raised me, and I borrowed one of her books to learn to summon Tabak, so I owe her for my best friend in the world. Sandru's almost like a brother, since we were both raised by Koya. I don't know much about Shalelu, but man she is a pretty one isn't she? She met with Koya sometimes, but I never really got the chance to talk to her.

3. How would you describe your personality?

I'm... well... I guess pretty curious. Sometimes to a bad degree I suppose. I talk a bit too much, I'm lucky Tabak is here to shut me up before I say stupid things sometimes.

4. What will your character contribute to the group?

Well I'm pretty good at magic. I can help other people more than the big flashy things that I've seen most mages and such do, but I'll help when I can. Tabak is a lot more... scary when he's fighting. Big guy can really tear some people up when he needs to.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?

I'm planning on exploring my bond with Tabak as much as I can and developing my arcane talents.

6. What is your day job?

I've been... travelling for a while... I uh... do magic sometimes for coin. I mean... it's not a job but... it's nice for some money sometimes.

EDIT: Changed the profile to fit a little better. Still need to add a history, but I'll get that in soon.

6. What is your day job?
Ental has been working day jobs as a courier in town.

I would like to apply a Character for this campaign. There are a few things you should know and I want to tell you up front.
Cons:
1. He's a Human Samurai, a Tian human but a human all the same.
2. I have been known to have bad grammar
3. I am already in a Jade Regent AP as a cross dressing Ninja

Pros:
1. I can post pretty regularly
2. He maybe human, but he is Tian and he has only been in Sandpoint for a couple of months
3. I take my character development really seriously.
4. I like the AP and I won't Metagame

Important Question: Given the above, what are my odds?

Collated up apps so far (apologies if I have anything wrong or misrepresented):
Haldaval Shantral - Elven Cavalier
Patcher - Half-Orc Fighter (Two-Weapon) or Half-Orc Wizard (Spellslinger)
Jaska Galahad - Varisian Inquisitor
Harun Kaijutsu - Half-Elf Rogue (Knife Master)
Ental Woodfingers - Halfling Sorceror (Verdant)
Azure Zero - Undecided
Harold Wainright - Half-Elf Ranger (Infiltrator)
Kirada (Emilah) - Shoanti Barbarian
Leto North - Half-Elf Summoner
Shanosuke - Tian Samurai

I'll chime in shortly with a Varisian Pilgrim archetype (from Inner Sea Magic) Cleric of yet to be determined race.

Everyone:
I'm worried that I've overstated my fondness for party diversity. I won't automatically disqualify humans, nor will submitting one hurt your chances to be selected, necessarily. If it comes down to choosing between two equal character ideas, I will likely use racial diversity as an alternative to a coin flip.

Here's my criteria when making my selections, in order of importance:
-Applied to one of my Previous PBPs and Weren't Selected
-Interesting character concept and background
-Mechanical diversity
-Monetary gifts (aka Bribes)
-Plays well with others (Not necessarily always liking your party mate, but not creating frustration or annoyance with your contrariness; this will be based on post history)
-Racial diversity
Don't know if that helps, but it does justify my ultimately arbitrary choice.

Azure_Zero:
I'm not sure yet. I'd rather see the character story before making a choice. As for the Changeling, where could I read more on that race as a Player Character? I'm willing to consider it if there really is some nice RP value and it's not too overpowered compared to everyone else.

Shanosuke:
Well, I'm torn. I know that you take development seriously as I'm playing with you in another game. But I think I'd rather give someone who isn't playing in the AP already a chance to experience it. So, I'd say they're not good - but not because of you or your character. Thanks for asking.

Mark:
Thanks for the list!

Let me know if I missed anyone's questions.

Could I ask what my odds are?

Patcher:
I'm torn. I'm afraid if I don't take you, Yenrry will die. And if I do, and then kill your character, Yenrry will die.

In all seriousness, I like your concepts and GM'ing is different than playing. But you're still getting to experience the story and you know some of the major "plot twists" that are coming.

I'd say, to be fair and honest, for the above-mentioned reasons, they aren't good.

For both you and Shanosuke, I recommend that you still apply, as your characters may rise above.

Bwahaha.

Please don't worry about Yenrry. I won't resent you for the choices you make, so long as you are honest about the choice you make.

Changeling found in Carrion Crown: Haunting of Harrowstone, page 84.

But From Memory:
Stats: -2CON, +2WIS,+2CHA
racials:
Hag trait(variable)
Claws(1d4)
Natural Armour +1
Darkvision 60ft.

And I'll compile stories after work for each of the 4 choices

This AP is everything I like about adventuring. I'll try to come up with an application.

Dreaming Warforged's application: Elven Diviner.

I'm still working on a few things (Q&A in particular).

If I get a chance, I'll also present a ranger.

I am pleased to present Tobar Pannell, a Dwarven Cleric of the Walker of Worlds (with the Varisian Pilgrim archetype).

The god is Sinashakte an Empyreal Lord from Faiths of Purity (p21), and Varisian Pilgrim is from Inner Sea Magic (p42). Let me know if you don't have the books and need more detail on them.

Although he is a dwarf, he has lived among the Varisians for all his living memory - so is more like them in mannerism and dress than he is a Dwarf.

Basic Crunch:
Str: 10, Dex: 12, Con: 12, Int: 13, Wis: 18, Cha: 12
Alignment: CG
Alternate Racial Traits: Stubborn
Traits: Rescued (by Koya), 2 x TBC
Feat: TBC
Skills: Heal, Knowledge (History), Perform (Oratory)
Cleric Domains: Travel and Luck

Questions:
1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
”Visiting, I have been a friend to the Mvashti family for a long time. I’ve recently returned to town on a caravan and decided to stay a while”

2. Which NPC are you connected to?
”Koya Mvashti, though I first met her when she was just a lass. I was found amidst a broken caravan bearing copper from Kopparberget, the only survivor but almost dead. Koya saved me from the boneyard by calling upon Desna for salvation. Though it healed my body, my mind was still broken and I had no memory of my life before that day.”

”Madame Niska took me and got me back on my feet, and I’ve been serving on caravans since. You might say that the Varisian life has agreed with me.”

3. How would you describe your personality?
”Don’t let the beard fool you, my heart is Varisian. I hold steadfast to those that I can call kin, and my feet get itchy if I’m forced to stand still for too long. I’m never more at home than seated around a campfire, embers burning low and spinning tales of the times that have passed before us.”

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
”The Walker of Worlds sees fit to look over those I travel with and grants me some small measure of curative powers. I’ve always felt lucky, and that seems to rub off on those around me as well.”
Will be a support divine caster. Mainly healing and using Caravan Bond to grant re-rolls and travel abilities to the party. Outside of combat he will be a healer and provide knowledge (history)

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
Cleric all the way. Spell choices will revolve around pretty much a pure support / healing role.

6. What is your day job?
”I work with caravans, serving as their healer. Though I gain more through hearing the stories of my fellow travellers. Would you care for a Harrow reading? See what fate the cards hold for you today?”

Let me know if you'd like to see any more or have me flesh out any portions good sir.

Dotting with GREAT interest with this brand new character.

A Gnome Cleric of Sarenrae who will have the childhood friend trait with one of the girls.

I haven't read a single page of this AP (excepting the PG) yet, in hopes of getting a chance to run it as a PC.

Until I get back later tonight and update the toon, feel free to check out Kythas in DM Patcher's Serpent Skull AP threads if you want to get a feeling of how I post. (Currently the ONLY game I am a part of)

I'm VERY committed to posting every day. (in fact I don't think I've missed a day yet in the IC in SS) I often post a lot more.

DM_Todd: I too am in another Jade Regent game, and I have no idea if that or this will be faster, so I don't know if I'll "know plot twists" or not. My character in that and this character are so different, though, It feels like it would be two different APs :). But if that's high in your considerations, I thought you should know.

Dark Archive

Appearance / Backstory Garand was mockingly named ‘Stone of the Moon,’ in his youth, as his mother was of the Shunder-Quah, and his father of the Lyrune-Quah. Their joining was not approved by the Quahs (or their parents), and his father died trying to prove himself before his son was born. His mother in turn died giving birth to him, on a night when the moon hung low and bloated in the night sky, the color of blood, agreed upon by all to be a terrible omen. The child was left with no father, no mother, and considered by others his age to only be ‘half a man,’ as his blood was not pure. Shoanti tradition has it that the moon is made of light, not stone, and so ‘stone of the moon’ could be seen as a Shoanti term meaning ‘no such thing.’ And so he was named, for something that should not exist, as he was generally regarded to be.

Feeling that his people had abandoned him, he flouted their ways, embracing the civilized god Erastil’s teachings, seeking in them a sense of community that had been denied him by the circumstances of his birth, and ignoring the ways and traditions of his people, save as they served him, so that his stubbornness led to those who had scorned him eventually having valid reason to do so.

When he approached the shaman, as his body approached adulthood, and told her that he sought to learn the ways of the bear-shaman, she spat on the ground and told him to forge his own understanding with the bear-spirit, directing him towards a cave where such a spirit might be found, but offering him no other counsel. (While he does not know this, she treated him no differently than any other who would ask to follow in her footsteps. It is never an easy path to walk…)

He approached the cave, his heart hammering in his heart, having already seen the signs of the bear’s residence in the tracks and spoor outside, wondering if the old woman had sent him here merely to feed her totem’s hunger. The smell of blood filled his nostrils, and he stepped into the cave to see the bear within, rising from having just delivered herself of a single cub. In a rage, she surged forward and he barely had time to set his spear to receive her charge before she was upon him. The spear sank deep, and then was torn from his hands as it failed to slow her advance, and he was hurled to the ground by what felt like an avalanche, her fangs sinking into his hand and forearm, thrust up to ward her away from his throat, as he fumbled for a knife and stabbed and stabbed and stabbed again into her unresisting bulk. Long minutes passed, a blur of blood and fire and pain, before he realized that she had not killed him, but was lying dead atop him, having given too much of her strength to bring her cub into the world, and only surviving his initial spear thrust by a thread.

He lost consciousness for a time, awakened only by the sound of the squalling cub, trying to suckle from the rapidly cooling body of its mother, and he was struck by the similarity between this cub’s life and his own, to never know his mother, or his father.

His hand seemed to hang by shreds of flesh from his forearm, nearly torn free by the single bite the she-bear had managed to deliver, and he had to labor to turn her body so that the cub might suckle one last time from his mother’s milk. He bound his hand as best he could, and gathered up the cub when it had drunk its fill, and returned to the old woman, to take his place as her apprentice, earning the new name, ‘Blood-Hand,’ from the gruesome sight of his mangled hand.

Two winters have passed since that day, and with the medicine and magic he learned from his teacher, his hand is healed enough to be usable, although it still is somewhat malformed, and covered with scar tissue. The orphaned cub has grown slowly, denied proper feeding from much of its own youth, but Garand also recognizes that the bears growth is somehow being magically slowed, as his life-patterns become entwined with his own, so that he grows in time with the development of Garand’s spirit.

Despite the begrudging acceptance he has found since he became a bear-shaman in truth, Garand still bears no great love for his people or their ways, and has chosen to walk forth into the world of the civilized men, from which he learned the words of the great horned hunter they name Erastil, god of community and of the hunt. He still seeks the family that he feels was denied him, and has chosen to make it from those like himself and his bear companion, who have no close family of their own, or who reject the ways of their family and choose to walk alone.

In Sandpoint, he has found several such people, such as Ameiko, exotic woman from an exotic land, not only without kin, but separated from her own people and their ways by uncounted miles, and wise Koya, who seems to have blossomed at an age where most would wither, excited by the prospect of no longer living the life that had been set down for her, and travelling far, to see instead the wonders of the world. Bold Sandru increasingly turns away from the plans his family have for the future, wishing to chart his own path, and Shalelu has turned away not only from a different culture, but a different people entirely, to live among a race that must, at times, seem alien to her.

.

Campaign Trait – either Childhood Crush (Sandru) or Rescued (Koya).
Other Traits
Rich Parents (spent to purchase his bow, which represents a gift from Shalelu, who will eventually teach him to craft his own bows and arrows)
One other TBA

Reactionary (+2 Init)
Sacred Touch (stabilize by touch)

The 'iffy' part would be him using the Rich Parents trait the way he has, substituting the fluff for a different source of the expensive item he carries.

The questions;

Quote:

1. Garand is trying to find a place in the world, preferably with other people who aren't 'fitting in' and lack a sense of community. He's originally from the Storval Plateau, but was drawn by the lure of an endless expanse of water, which, to him, seemed like a fantasy told by travellers.

2. To be decided. I see him most strongly connected to Koya (if he takes the Rescued trait), who might represent the mother he never knew, or Sandru (if he takes the Childhood Crush trait), who might represent a part of himself that he doesn't yet understand that *also* prompted him to feel out of place among his tribesmen.

3. Approval-seeker, but prickly and prone to being his own worst enemy, making enemies where he could have made friends, by being overproud and too full of a headstrong rejection of tradition, even if it's an otherwise sensible tradition. Like all Shoanti, he holds grudges with both hands.

4. Healing, survival skills, animal handling / teamster training, knowledge of nature and (eventually) geography, allowing for some guide / scout roles. Also? A bear.

5. He's a druid. No intention to ever deviate from that path. I wanted to go Pack Lord and have multiple bears (which, mechanically, would have been a disaster, but I liked the visual), but that Archetype doesn't stack with Bear Shaman, so, heck with it, I'll just summon more bears as the situation calls for them. Less bears also means less dice to roll. That's always good for me.

6. Whatever Sandpoint and, later, the Caravan, calls for. Scout (and Guard) seems the most expensive one that would need to be hired, so it would end up keeping the overhead/expenses down if Garand covered that role. He can also fill in for Driver, Fortune-Teller, Healer, Spellcaster, if need be. Eventually, he'll also have Knowledge-geography, and be able to take on Guide, as well, but I ran out of skill points. :)

Does your questions equate to the their back story or do you want it written out?

I'll assume written out,

1) Human(Ulfen), Fighter (Phalanx)

Titania Evangeline Snow-fell:

Backstory:
Titania was born to a family of bigger than normal Ulfen, near Sand Point When she was 5 their was an attack on her house hold from a whole tribe of goblins. In the aftermath of the attack, Shalelu found her parents dead, but it looked like in her eyes that they were defending a spot of the house. Shalelu saw an old bear rug on the floor, but the front right paw was flipped under itself, their under the rug in a hidden compartment in the floor, Shalelu found Titania, curled up in a tight ball, with tears flowing from her eyes. Shalelu decided to Adopted her into her family. As Titania grew up she seemed to follow her parents weapon and shield style of fighting.

2) Half-elf, Ninja

Mai Sagara:

Mai was a born a bastard of Shalelu's father, whom had a quick affair with a local Ulfen woman, though their is speculation that mislabeled potion(s) were the cause. While her mom worked was looked after by a Tian family whom were training their own children in ninja arts using games to hide the training, and Mai was excelling at them. She is also a very good friend of Ameiko during their childhood and even today. Mai was so good at the ninja games that the Tian family let her join the ninja clan at the age of 16.

3) Half-elf, Monk (Martial Artist)

Pai Silverfall:

Pai was a born a bastard of Shalelu's father, whom had a quick affair with a local Ulfen woman, though their is speculation that mislabeled potion(s) were the cause. While her mom worked was looked after by a Tian family whom were training their own children in Martial Arts using games and exercises, and Mai was excelling at them. She is also a very good friend of Ameiko during their childhood and also and even today. Pai still sees Shalelu as a big sister, and even join Shalelu on a few outings into the local woods to hunter for food.

4) Changeling Fighter(Unarmed)

Ayla Dante:

Ayla Dante was found on the door step of the Dante family near sand point. But When she was 5 their was an attack on her house hold from a whole tribe of goblins. In the aftermath of the attack, Shalelu found her adoptive parents dead, but it looked like in her eyes that they were defending a spot of the house. Shalelu saw an old bear rug on the floor, but the front right paw was flipped under itself, their under the rug in a hidden compartment in the floor, Shalelu found Ayla, curled up in a tight ball, with tears flowing from her eyes. Shalelu decided to Adopted her into her family, even though the family though of Ayla's eyes as the fairy eye. As Ayla grew up she seemed to follow her old adoptive parents style of fighting as she herself gained a slight fear of weapons and did not like to hold them.

And done, Make your pick?

Here is my application:

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?
A. I am here to help Shalelu in her mission to this area. Originally I am from the Mierani Forest, and when Shalelu travels to her next assignment, I will go as well.

2. Which NPC are you connected to?
A. I am connected to Shalelu. She rescued me from torture and death at the hands of Treerazor's minions, and I owe her everything.

3. How would you describe your personality?
I am dedicated and focused. Loyal to Shalelu. I am painfully shy around strangers, and tends to keep my scarf over my scars.

4. What will your character contribute to the group?
I can act as a scout, pathfinder and hunter.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?
Ranger all the way.

6. What is your day job?
I am a scout for Shalelu (or anything else she asks) and a guide or hunter for private hire.

Haldaval:
Thanks for your honesty. It will have an effect on my decision.

Everyone:
Already playing in a JR PbP will be negatively rated. It won't be impossible to get in at all, but it will hurt your chances.

Azure:
I think I like the Ninja or Monk best. Proceed with one of those - whichever is more interesting mechanically to you.

Set:
We can run with rich parents and change the fluff. No problem.

Mark:
I have the books and I'm fine with the choices - I've never played with a minor deity before.

Updated Character sheet, will move on to the Questions ASAP...

Liberty's Edge

I forgot to mention this in my post but if you have any questions for me please feel free to ask. I am also open to changing aspects of my character if they don't fit the theme or tone you plan on going for with this campaign.

Thanks GM_Todd, I'll get to work on it.

Out of curiousity;
What did you like and dislike about their back stories?
What is your opinion of the four race-class combos I gave?

Hey there Todd, I also would like to apply for this game. All information can be found in the profile (I've kept the sheet real simple to accomodate DM specifics), including the GM questions. I'm still trying to hunt down a more appropriate avatar picture, so it may change.

YAY GMT! I'm already in one of your games I hope that doesn't disqualify more for this one because you are an INCREDIBLE GM does shameless flattery count as a bribe? lol I am going to put forward a Half-Orc Monk named Fu'lao Shen. Born in an orphanage, a wandering sensei saw him exercise great restraint with some bullies that were attacking him. Though he was obviously stronger than them, he did not attack them back. When the sensei stepped in and stopped the boys he asked Fu'lao why he did not fight back. Fu'lao simply replied that he had seen water flowing over rocks when it rained and that the stone remained after the sun dried it all up. He said he was trying to be like the stone. The sensei smiled and took him back to the monastery to teach him and become his master in the ways of the monk. Teaching him to protect those that cannot protect themselves.

Questions:

1. Why are you in Sandpoint? Are you visiting or a local?

Fu'lao is originally from Sandpoint and when his master told him to travel the world and gain the experience that only the world can provide. He figured Sandpoint would be an excellent place to return to in order to start his journey.

2. Which NPC are you connected to?

During on of Fu'lao's many times attempting to run away from the orphanage before he was found by his sensei, Shalelu saved his life when he attempted to cross a fallen log across a fast moving river. He slipped and would have fallen to his death had Shalelu not arrived at just the right time to pull him to safety.

3. How would you describe your personality?

Fu'lao is someone who likes to talk. He enjoys the company of others which he craved as a youth. He is a fierce friend and extremely loyal to those who earn his respect and trust. He has picked up some of his masters cryptic proverbs and tends to pull them out at opportune times.

4. What will your character contribute to the group?

As a monk, Fu'lao will be excellent at defending his companions and his skills in battle are where he shines but he also can act as a tempering influence in times of strife.

5. What are your plans for your character mechanically? I don't need to know a level-by-level progression, but where are you taking him/her?

Probably straight monk, maybe monk of the sacred mountain but I'm not sure

Cool - I personally find that the minor deities are a bit more interesting. FYI - I am not currently running or a part of any Jade Regent APs.

Everyone:
Thanks to Mark, we have a pretty good (I think - let me know if something's not correct) list of who's applied. I've taken his list and organized it by class and style below.

Some of you already have this in your background, but I'd like to ask one more RP and one more general question. This will help give me some more character flavor and see if any applicants have moved on. To be considered, you MUST answer the two questions below.

1. Why would character consider leaving Sandpoint to travel to the other side of the world?
2. Are you already participating in a JR PbP game?

-----
Azure: I thought their stories were a little more original than the fighters'. I'm cool with your race choices.

imimrtl: I'll count flattery as a bribe. Thank you.
