I'm going to buy my first Adventure Path and I'd like some recommendations.
Let me set down some criteria first.
1. I like stories with strong, independent female characters involved.
2. I like stories with at least a little bit of ethnic angles, not stuff that is just plain anglo-saxon.
3. I like adventures that are easily portable to another game world (specifically, 3e Realms).
With those three (or at least the first two) in mind, what would be your first recommendation of the Adventure Paths so far published? (Including the 3e, pre-Pathfinder ones.)

I would point you to Legacy of Fire. It has some strong female NPC's has a variety of Ethnic angles {being Arabic based is a change} and would port very easily into FR. Nex could be any number of achmages{ I would go with Netheril or Mulhorand}
I would set the game in Calimshan as it is perfect for the Ap

I would have to strongly agree with others that Legacy of Fire hits all your points right on the head.
The only issue (and don't know if it is an issue with you) is that it was written for the 3.5 ruleset instead of the Pathfinder ruleset, so that might mean some conversion if you are running Pathfinder RPG (or not if you are running 3.5).
Calimshan would be a strong contender for location in FR as others have mentioned as well.

Some conversion help here.

Yup, I agree with Numerian, Jade Regent looks to be up your alley. Starts with 3 female NPCs; two very independent* the third looks to be "coming into her own" as the AP progresses. A fourth female appears about 2/3 of the way through that definitely fits #1, so does a fifth if you count non core races.
Downside is that it's just now releasing so you'll either have to wait six months for all the modules to release or play as it releases (I'm doing that, the threats leveled at me by my players, one being my wife, left no other options.)

The next adventure path, Jade Regent, sounds like it. Easily portable, travel from Luskan through the Cold Lands and the Hordelands to Kara-Tur.
I disagree. Jade Regent is probably, of all the APs published so far, the least portable to FR. By orders of magnitude. (I've converted every single AP Paizo has published to date to FR, but I dumped Jade Regent because it's not even remotely feasible... the first 3 volumes, at least, are entirely dependent on Golarion's [somewhat wonky] geography. 4-6 could be converted to FR.) Do not, I repeat, do not choose Jade Regent if you want to convert to FR.
However:
- Jade Regent will meet your 1 and 2.
- Legacy of Fire meets all 3.

Legacy of Fire works if placed down in Zahkarah, while the Jade Regent can be used for Kara-Tur. Council of Thieves (which I plan on running) I plan on placing in Athkatla.
I haven't seen Carrion Crown, so I'm no help there. As for Kingmaker, I can't see it working in the Realms.
Serpent's Skull can be incorporated in the Chult (another I plan on running). Legacy of Fire will need some major converting in terms of creatures for it to work. Still, it's a good AP.

Only the last 3 books of Jade Regent have a hope of fitting in the Realms. But overall, this AP is the only one that is not convertible. Your best interest is to skip it.
Legacy of Fire definitely works very well in Zakhara/Al-Qadim. VERY well.
Council of Thieves isn't too bad either. Athkatla sounds pretty good - I put it in Thesk (namely the fairly undetailed city of Milvarune). I deviled it up pretty good there, and got to use the city map and details unchanged.
I haven't seen Carrion Crown, so I'm no help there.
Carrion Crown works very well in Damara (and in fact can help flesh out a bunch of Damara, beyond what's in FR9 The Bloodstone Lands). The Whispering Tyrant becomes Zhengyi the Witch King. Easy-peasy.
As for Kingmaker, I can't see it working in the Realms.
It actually works very well in FR - as many people already mentioned, the Border Kingdoms is the best fit. (In fact, the Border Kingdoms were designed for exactly what Kingmaker is proposing.) You have to modify the geography a bit (but you can still keep the towns, including Pitax), but that's it. And the geography modification in this is easier than most other conversions. Do you have the towns? Check. Do you have a bunch of hexes to explore? Check. Need to add some rivers and forests here and there? Check (portions of the Border Kingdoms is simply blank land).
I put Kingmaker in the eastern Border Kingdoms, south of (and including) the High to Nether Mukshars and surrounding region. It's a little bit more compressed than Golarion's River Kingdoms, but my players and I prefer it that way.
Serpent's Skull can be incorporated in the Chult (another I plan on running).
Mhair (serpent kingdom jungles) is even better. The Lapaliiyan town of Malaxer stands in for Eleder (it even says in the Serpent Kingdoms book that Malaxer is the gateway for expeditions into Mhair). And you can use the Eleder map to boot.
And, since I'm at it:
- I placed Rise of the Runelords in Estagund and kept it a bit more reasonably compact than what is written. Turned out better there than it did for Golarion, interestingly enough.
- Curse of the Crimson Throne works pretty good in Chessenta, made up of a bunch of city states that, while not hostile to each other, are quite standoffish. In order to use the map and city unchanged, I put Korvosa into the undetailed Chessentan city of Maerduuth. The barbarians in that AP are a tribe that traveled north from Shaar. The Cinderlands can be anywhere south/southwest (near the mountain ranges there) or even Black Ash Plain to the southeast near Unther (if you want your PCs to travel that far).
- Second Darkness actually works well in Altumbel / southern Aglarond. All the elves are Star Elves from the Yuirwood (which can help explain the Golarion drow goofiness) and Riddleport becomes Spandeliyon (and can be used wholesale, including the map). The campaign is a bit more compact in area, and stays around the Yuirwood/Altumbel region. Again, works almost better than as written for Golarion.

Hello,
thank you for all your previous recommendations on this thread. I got Legacy of Fire and was very satisfied with it. I am looking for a new recommendation now.
I have a party of six around 6th-7th level, and they are entering the Moonsea region in the Forgotten Realms, from the direction of Damara. I am looking for an adventure path (or rather a sub-volume of an entire path) that would best fit with this level and cultural feel. The Moonsea is mainly (Central/Eastern?) European in feel. I'd be interested in maybe running a city-based adventure in Mulmaster, Phlan, Hillsfar or Zhentil Keep, or maybe an exploration of Ironfang Keep, or some wilderness stuff in the great gray land of Thar.
Primarily I'm looking for 3.5/PF compatible material, but if you have great 1e/2e adventures that deal with this region, I'm all ears too.

You might already have the following, but I thought that I'd point them out anyway ...
Do you have Mysteries of the Moonsea (the 3.5 FR supplement from WotC)? It contains a string of smaller adventures which are tied together. The L 1 to 7 ones are based out of Melvaunt, the L 6 to 12 ones are out of Hillsfar, the L 9 to 14 ones are out of Mulmaster, and the L 12 to 18 ones are out of Zhentil Keep.
One could also add in the Sons of Gruumsh module (using the tougher L 8 version which was offered at WotC website). It too is based out of Melvaunt.

Glad to have helped! :)
If you're feeling particularly ambitious, the original H 1-4 series of modules (nothing to do with 4e's H series) takes place in/around Bloodstone Pass between Vaasa and Damara. It's not quite the Moonsea, but it's relatively near by - and the modules are rather high-level (some Battle System rules are in one module because of warring armies, and the end-game involves an extremely high-level jaunt to the Abyss).
However, I have no idea how they will convert to 3.x/PF. I suspect that one would have to look around for some decent conversions. Also, the main action of the 4-module series takes place in the late 1350s DR (according to the Grand History of the Realms). Various 3.5 supplements offer tidbits of information on the Bloodstone Pass region and certain classes, alternate class features, etc..

Also you could of course go through Rashaemen. One of my favorite places in Faerun.

Or the Border Kingdoms.
The Geography doesn't work very well, but the political set up is basically the same as the River Kingdoms.
3e Realms actually had a Kingmaker style scenario: The Stonelands in Northern Cormyr. Replace the River Kingdoms with scheming rivals from the Zhentarim and Sembia and you're well on your way. You'd have the make the "stone"lands a bit greener to keep the maps.
King Azoun (and, presumably, his heirs) had a standing offer of a Baronial title for anyone who could tame the Stonelands. Add in the death of Azoun, and you've got the makings of an epic campaign that could put your PCs on the throne of Cormyr.
