Summon Minor Monster

Rules Questions

Would you as a DM let a person use Summon Minor Monster summon a Hydry or Skunk?

Skunk is fan made, (Hydry is 3rd party book), but both legal summoned monster as both are tiny (as the spell says animal animal that is tiny).

If not, explain why. And same for if yes.

I believe it fits spell:

Can you post the stats on the Hydry and the Skunk?

Sight unseen, I would have to say no, simply because they are sight unseen.

Even seen, I'd probably still say no, as I do not allow 3rd party content at the table and only in-house homebrewing. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis, but are very rare.

Both are in the PSRD:

Skunk: No because of this:

Quote:
The stench is highly potent, and short of magical means of cleaning, all cloth and such material continue to reek for 1d6 months. The odor is so strong that it doubles all chances for wandering monster encounters and imposes a -12 circumstance penalty on Stealth checks attempted while wearing clothing contaminated with a skunk’s musk. Flesh, leather goods, metal goods (weapons, armor, and the like) must be washed in a concentrated mixture of vinegar for a period of 1d3 days. Otherwise, the stench clings to them for at least 1 week, imposing the same modifiers to wandering monster encounters and Stealth checks.

This happens regardless of succeeding/failing on a save. Basically it's an anti-stealth critter. -12 stealth?! No, just no. On top of that, needing two saves (even at DC 10) for an ability is not good for the level. Sickened isn't too terrible, but -2 is a big deal at 1st or 2nd level (when this spell is useful). Blinded is an encounter-ender...pretty much at every level.

Hydrus: Also no, mostly because I can't imagine something the size of a housecat (tiny) crawling into the body of a halfling (small).

At-will save or paralyzed abilities, especially at low levels, is not really balanced. There is no limitation on the number of usages per day or a delay (like a dragon's breath weapon). Again, DC 11 isn't too fearsome, but getting to summon 1d3 (or more) of them and just spamming this until a save is failed (even only on a natural 1) is lame.

As I said before, I don't like 3rd party content, and this doesn't help my opinion of it.

I wouldn't allow them.

There are 2 reasons

First off, I don't allow 3rd party or fan-created content. I'm big on NOT being a playtester. I pay for books so other people playtest for me.

That of course may not apply to you.

The second reason is that spells that are open ended like summon minor monster (which is the only summon monster spell without a specific summon list) become more powerful with more versatility. In other words, the more creatures with more abilities that you allow to be summoned, the more powerful the spell becomes. This creates a balance problem that the designers never intended.

Both these creatures have unique special abilities that increase the power of the spell. The skunk has a mini stinking cloud/blindness effect, while the hydrus, well, the hydrus is WAY nastier than other tiny creatures and has pretty nasty special abilities too. Look at the CR.
