I am surprised that everyone in this thread has taken it for granted that whether a civilization is in its ascendancy or decline is a known and fixed thing.
Wouldn't the greatest possibility be to be the hero who takes a civilization that everyone thinks is in decline and brings it to a new ascendancy?

I used to joke that it would be more fun to live during the decline of empire, so you can sit back and enjoy the decadence.
But looking at the current status of the world today, I think I would prefer having lived in civilization's ascendency.
During the ascent of a civilazation, we would all be working together to build something new, rather than fighting tooth and nail trying to hold together the status quo and squabbling over the scraps.
Of course, the fall of a civilization pretty much always means the rise of a new one...
May you live in interesting times.

Ascendancy. I have kids.
So how are you adapting?
I agree with the group who believe that the U.S. is in decline: Life expectancy is decreasing, maternal mortality is increasing, the wealth gap is staggering, and unlike previous times, the general populace seems too apathetic to do anything about it. I don't foresee anything like the labor riots of the 1800s or early 1900s coming along. Heck, we haven't even had a major strike since Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers back in 1981. When quality of life for Joe Average is on the decline, and Joe Average can't be bothered to get off the sofa to do anything about it, your country is in trouble.
So I'm setting aside funds for my kids so they will not be trapped among the masses no matter where they choose to live, and the wife and I are planning an exodus to Europe once we retire.
