Arcane Strike

Rules Questions

How often can you use the Arcane Strike feat? I am thinking once per day or encounter, otherwise since it is a swift action, why not just buff up your weapon (any weapon) during every encounter?

Arcane Strike can be used each round, just as, for example, Power Attack can be used each round, or Weapon Focus.

as often as you have a swift action to activate it.

That.

Yep, Arcane Strike is pretty much free damage to anyone who qualifies for the feat and has a swift action to use every round.

Which is why i love it... bards ftw.

Shadow Lodge

Well, free weapon damage.

If you're the Batman-style back of the pack combat controller wizard, the feat's a lot less impressive, but that's why it's Bards FTW.

arcane strike is absolutely a good feat to have even if you are the runaway wizard sitting in the back because how often does said wizard get hit by flanking creatures or hidden enemies and if I'm not mistaken you can use it with a ranged weapon (please correct me if I'm wrong) so throwing a dagger with arcane strike is invaluable for a wizard, sorcerer, witch, bard, summoner, or any other arcane caster to have i tend to combine it with arcane blast just to make sure I do damage to whatever i set my sights on

At what levels are you thinking? By the time you get decent damage out of it, you can instead case any number of actually useful spells that significantly outdo +1to+6 damage on an attack that is unlikely to even hit.

This. Also, it's not hard for an arcane caster to have an SLA that's a ranged touch (with more range than a dagger) that deals 1d6 + half level.

Also, crossbows exist.

What does FTW stand for?

It does wonders in the hands of bards and weapon-liking arcane folk (EKs, Arcane Tricksters, etc.) -- it makes a nice damage boost in rounds they're not doing something else with their swift action (quickened spells, for instance)

For the win.

It's a (usually contextual) expression of liking or admiration. For instance, the above usage of "Bards FTW" in the context of Arcane Strike basically means, "In regard to Arcane Strike, Bards get a chance to outshine other classes". Except it's a lot easier to express exuberance in the shorter "bards FTW" than in a longer, more descriptive sentence.

What is SLA?

Spell Like Ability.

This is to distinguish it from Supernatural Abilities, Extraordinary Abilities, or Natural Abilities as the rules differ on how each type interacts with an anti-magic field, for example.

See page 221 of the core rulebook right under the heading "Special Abilities".

The feat was made into a swift action to use every round so it could not stack with the Eldrich Knight's Spell Critial class ability. Same goes for Arcane Armor training, or any other swift actions, like quicken spells. I will spare you the lengthy rant; lets just say it is not one of my popular decisions from the game designer.

Yes. Inquiring minds and all that. If it had an N in it, I'd say Danger Mouse.

Arcane Strike (Combat):

You draw upon your arcane power to enhance your weapons with magical energy.

Prerequisite : Ability to cast arcane spells.

Benefit : As a swift action, you can imbue your weapons with a fraction of your power. For 1 round, your weapons deal +1 damage and are treated as magic for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. For every five caster levels you possess, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +5 at 20th level.

it only works for weapon damage, not sla or spells. also its only damage and not 'to hit.'

its certainly not a useless feat, but not overly helpful for straight casters(see wizard).

For the new Magus this feat Rocks. Just spam it every round you don't use your swift action on something else.

At high level a bladebound magus will have +5 damage from an enhancement bonus, +5 damage from black blade strike and +5/6 damage from arcane strike. Going to be pretty nice with that keen scimitar!

Scarab Sages

Interestingly, anyone considering the Red Mantis Assassin prestige class could pick up Arcane Strike as an effective "weapon specialization" feat. Granted, you'd only ever get +3 out of it, but it's an option for boosting damage a bit more. You'd get a total of +7 per attack with it, including your bonus specialization feats, which would VERY much help with the lower damage from a lower strength.
