Skill points

Hey can someone explain how the " you cant have more ranks in a skill than your total HD" thing. Would that mean at level 1 you can only have 1 rank in a skill????? How does this work lol?

Correct.

So whats the problem there?

Change from 3.5 - Class skills with at least one rank in them get a +3, so the same effect, just less skill points needed.

Yes, that is correct. but it does not mean that the complete score can only be one.
If Stealth is a class skill, you get as following:
1 rank + dex modifier (lets say +2) + 3 = 6
If you have feats that gives bonus, add these as well.

On the other hand, unless you play rogue there should be enough skill you need, for you distribute the skill-points properly

It was a mechanical change from 3.5 to simplify an unnecessarily complex system. Not that it was overly complex, but always room for improvement. The numbers stay basically the same, but without the need for complexity.

Dont forget that there is no "cross-class" skills any more. So no 1/2 ranks in a skill.

Thank God yes.

I second that statement.

Wait are there any special things then that would allow a rogue to put more than 1 rank in a skill per level ?

Not that I can think of. There are feats that add more modifiers like skill focus, but they don't increase your ranks. They just add to your final skill check.

I would like to point out that you can invest more than one rank in a skill in a level-up, but that would be because you had not invested in that skill at an earlier level and are now investing to catch up. The most skill ranks a character can have is limited to their character level.

Thanks that clears things up for me. =)

Nope, but the Rogue has skillpoints like noone else. 8 + int modifier, so after a few lvls you usually have enough for quite a few fluffskills.

But forget it, you simply cannot have higher ranks than your total HD. Its quite basic ;)

Sorry I never played 3.5, so was lost on how the 1/lvl thing was unclear... now I see it was 'different'...!
