Weapon Focus is better for a fight against a big dragon -- or something where ACs are high for your level.

The most difficult fights, IMO, are "party-on-party" with the bad guys led by a fighter in plate-armor with an AC buff from a caster ally. I.e., 8th- or 10th-level tank with a crapton of hitpoints, and you're flailing with your weak iterative while he's spanking you in the corner of the tavern-room where he's bullrushed you.

Weapon Focus really, really shines on Improved Critical crit-confirm iteratives. Everybody with a better-than 19/20 range should have it.

I meant to respond to this statement earlier...good time to bring it up now.

The other way to see it is whether you want something that'll help you out against most enemies, since you'll face a lot more low CR monsters than high CR ones, or against a few really hard to hit ones?

I view the two statements to be two sides of the same coin, but I'd be willing to be persuaded otherwise. Especially since I'm not 100% certain on my assertion that a PC will face more lower CR monsters than higher CR monsters (relative to whatever level they are).

I'd actually prefer it to be easy all the time. If WF scaled it would basically be removing the power attack penalty and thus keep up with enhanced damage.

And yeah, I'd want to be one-shoting as much as possible at every level. I prefer a cinematic emulation, so I'd want to plow through lots of minions as the default, then have a "normal" exchange with the BBEG, though presumably the killing blow will spectacularly pass it's negative Con score.

Yeah it's basically like a coin. On one side you have lots of low CR monsters that Power Attack is better at. On another side, you have a few hard monsters that push the limits of your character and require every advantage you have. I think both sides make the feats pretty much equal.

I understand your perspective, but having a different view on how the game should be played shouldn't change how the feat should be balanced in relation to other feats.

It's hard to say a feat is crappy because it doesn't work with a version of the game that is completely different from what is intended.

I always plan on Weapon Focus on my melee-focused medium BAB martial characters (monks, eldritch knights, etc). It's almost mandatory if I want to stay competitive with the fighters and rangers.
