Hi,
Wondering how much interest there is to play through the Carrion Crown. I was fascinated by the idea of running a proper horror game with the Pathfinder system and I find myself with enough time to focus on being DM. I've recently created a website and forum through which I'll be running it.
I live in Eastern Australia (UTC +10) so people in that timezone would rock (not required though) but let me know if you think a Play by Post adventure would be something you could contribute to and enjoy. There's a few rules and I'll be modifying the adventure path slightly (changes involve not using the Harrow Deck and removing an item). There's a lot more detail on the website, check it out for the detailed rules: www.luduswerks.com
Please list:
- Character Name, Class, Race, Alignment(Play style) and two possible character development subplots I could expand on
- Download the Carrion Crown Player Guide if you're unfamiliar with the setting, but it'll be a horror story and your characters have to know the professor. If you've already played the adventure this isn't for you.
I'm looking for four more players who think they've got time to post roughly once per day, you're free to use the Core Rulebook and Advanced Player Guide, and also the Tome of Secrets if you want. I won't be stepping outside of those rulebooks.
I check this board pretty much daily so feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to respond.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Regards,
Dan

Tozur Spellfang |

I'd be interested in applying with this character.
Bo Skysong, human monk. Lawful good, which for me entails the desire to do good and right, without sacrifices (and not stupidly either). As for character development, I would suggest that she struggles with not caving into the helplessness and hopelessness of not always being able to save everybody and do the right thing, and... I'm not sure what to suggest for the other one, though I am always open to my characters getting thoroughly messed up by way of diseases, losing limbs, emotional trauma, you name it. (though please don't overdo it / make it too permanent (wut))
As for knowing the professor, I went with the Chance Saviour trait from the player's guide. I haven't written a proper background yet, but am dotting this so far.

Elrithrathiel |

Also for your consideration.
Elrith is NG, she is a bit proud of her abilities to unleash death when her target has never seen her face (not that she is cowardly, she just enjoys the game), but only does so when she is convinced of the guilt and great evil of her target.
One of her character motivations/side plots is her desire to gain enough reknown and fame (difficult when you specialize in being anonymous) to return to her home. Perhaps her other development possibility could be her flirting with enjoying her abilities a bit too much (kind of cliche for a sniper type, I know, but fun nonetheless).
I went with Chance Saviour also. Perhaps she and Bo were there together, or perhaps the good professor just needed a lot of saving in his life.

Name Eingal Barringald
Race Dwarf
Class Wizard
Alignment LN
Play Style Spellcaster/archer; I'll probably take a dip into fighter at some point, and enter the eldritch knight prestige class. I'm likely to take Craft Magic Arms and Armor, in order to craft magical ammunition.
Link to the Professor Eingal never met Professor Lorrimor, only knowing of the man through his wife. Lorrimor had assisted her in courting the dwarf wizard, and told her he would call upon her to repay the debt some day. However, she died in a monster attack, and when the fated summons arrived Eingal took it upon himself to settle his late wife's burden.
Character Subplot 1 Due to the sudden and violent nature of the attack that took her life, Eingal fears his wife's soul has not traveled to Pharasma's Boneyard. He's been plagued with dreams where she is trapped, unable to escape, and believes some external force is keeping her from the afterlife. He knows that such spirits can only retain their sanity for so long, and hopes to lift her burden before she transforms into some type of undead horror. The timely arrival of Lorrimor's summons indicated that the Professor might have had somethnig to do with her current torment.
Character Subplot 2 Eingal was training to join the Blue Warders, a sect of librarians based in the dwarf city of Tar-Kazmukh, in the Five Kings Mountains. During his studies he came across some old journals, buried and forgotten in one of the order's older record halls. He was surprised to discover that one Kimgald Barringald had once served as a Warder, but for some reason had been exiled from the library. The entry lacked any details, but did indicate Kimgald had left the Five Kings for Ustalav. Intrigued to have uncovered news of a possible ancestor, unknown to him, Eingal hopes that he will be able to learn more of news of Kimgald Barringald during his journey.

Hi all,
Heaven's Agent, nice subplots - I'm looking for people who are willing to put a bit of thought and time into their characters and you seem to fit the grade! You're in if you still want to - I highly recommend taking a look at the site for all the 'details' and 'restrictions'.
To the others who posted so far, thanks and I've had a look through - I'm waiting to hear back from two friends who will probably play before I speak further about choices. There's no truer way to disaster than rocking out with a low-AC party*!
I'll probably get this started mid-week, there's a few things I want to work through in the next few days to ensure the adventure stays fun. (Treasure, XP, and Hero Points to mention a few)
I'd like to see someone with a *cough*higherAC*cough* if anyone's interested!
Regards,
Dan

Name Samson
Race Human
Class Paladin(Undead Scourge)
Alignment LG
Play Style: I will be playing him as a paladin with the undead scourge archetype and at this point in time I'm probably going to level straight paladin though I might see out the Holy Vindicator prestige class later on. I envision him wielding a long sword and then carrying a shield though only for AC bonuses, he won't be fighting with it(yet...maybe down the road...though the minuses to hit make it almost not worth doing)
Link to the Professor: Samson had once saved the Professors life in battle and after the danger had passed they talked and started working together, Samson's training against undead helping the Professor with his research. They were corresponding regularly(a couple of times a month) in letters. Samson helped the professor when ever he needed but the professor never summoned him to his side after the fateful day they met, it was more of a informative relationship.
Character Subplot 1 Samson had a pretty uneventful early childhood and when he turned 12 his father started to train him in the ways of swordsmanship and honor and he found he excelled at it rather quickly. That was until the attack on his home by the undead. They stuck so quickly and despite Samson doing everything he could to defend his family both his parents were killed in the attacks. From that day on he vowed to do what ever he could to remove the plague that is undead from the face of Galorion. He was taken from his home and moved into a church of Iomedae and started being trained as a Paladin. It was during one of his training missions in the wilderness that he crossed paths with the Professor who's wagon party had come under attack. He helped the party defeat their enemies and became fast friends with the professor.
Character Subplot 2 Samson was an orphan who never knew his birth parents. He has spent his entire life in Lepidstadt being raised by his adoptive parents, a cleric and a paladin. When he was old enough is adoptive father started training him in the ways of a paladin and it was during this part of his life that his path crossed with the professor.

I would like to submit Domiel Hydell, LN Human Alchemist (vivisectionist archetype) who was a promising student of the professor. 2 points for character development are that when he goes into a mutagen form is more of CG wrecking ball so that he would be more of a hero in that form and as a human more of a poisoner/sellsword. Second point is that he had been working for a crime lord as the poisoner and sometime assassin who when in said form as been killing of the people of the crime lord.

Greg Donaldson |

Name: Noctos Melwasúl
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Summoner
Eidolon's Name: Qulyabani
Eidolon Template: Biped
Over-Arching Theme 1: The Living Nightmare
Noctos was a happy Half-Elf who grew up in a farmhouse with both his parents. He had a younger brother and sister, and while they didn't have much, they didn't know that much was out there to be had, so they were happy. The crops they brought in was enough to feed the family through the winter, and they sold the extra for any other supplies they needed. Had the plague not happened, Noctos would have been at best, a historical footnote. Unfortunately, plague took his family and almost killed Noctos. During the fever dreams he slept/wandered deep into a local cave system, where he encountered...something. Whatever it was left took the plague from Noctos, but left him marked. Now he travels with the thing that took the plague onto itself, and protects him where-ever he goes.
(For those wondering what it was, it was an aberrant being. Haven't decided what it originally was, but for now it takes the shape of a medium-size Hook Horror. When in public, it remains heavily cloaked and hooded, though it can have a nasty, nasty temper...)
Over-Arching Theme 2: Scientific Curiosity
Noctos wandered for a while after becoming orphaned, until he finally came to Ravengro. There he was taken in for a time by a kindly old professor and his daughter. He learned and began traveling with Lorrimor. Noctos's overwhelming urge to learn and practice science and magic took hold at this point, possibly because of the Professor's influence, and he began learning at the University of Lepidstadt as soon as possible. His abilities in summoning have caused him to excel in the field of Extra-Planar studies, and he was close to graduating when he got news that the Professor had died.
(Traits Selected: Poverty-Stricken, and Teacher's Pet)
Greatest Fear: Noctos's Greatest fears, for obvious reasons, is of disease and death. Both scare the living daylights out of him, and if given the chance to run from both, he will. If cornered by either or both, he will collapse into a little ball and try to pull the earth over himself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I believe that answers all your questions, though not necessarily in a way you were expecting. If I am excepted, please let me know. Have a nice day/night. XP
Name Aishe Corsi
Race Human (Varisian)
Class Rogue (Scout/Swashbuckler)
Alignment CG
Play Style
A skirmishing quick witted woman with a sharp blade at her hip and several more around her person. She is quick to strike out at perceived enemies but also possesses a keen analytical mind.
Link to the Professor Chance Savior
Aishe had the fortunate chance to save the Professor’s life from a mugging in Magnimar when her Varisian caravan was camping nearby to resupply. Afterwards she spent some time with the Professor before he left the city and learned the value of a keen mind full of practical knowledge.
Character Subplot 1
The only daughter of a master two-weapon duelist of the Varisian tradition, growing up among the caravans of her forefathers. Her life was shaped by the expectations of her father and she learned to become a master duelist under the tutelage of her father alongside the other students. One day her father left the caravan and never came back, saying he “had business in Ustalav.”
Character Subplot 2
Though Aishe doesn’t know it, in her family scarf lays the lineage of a powerful and insane necromancer. He studied the nature of simpler undead forms and worked on improving zombies and skeletons into more powerful and efficient forms. The Corsi Necromancy book is popular among circles of necromancers who have the same desire for improved undead creatures but has not reached wider fame because of the limited number of copies.
G'day all,
An update on where things are at:
I've got the class selections back from two friends, so I've got three characters chosen - wizard, sorceror and ranger.
That leaves me with two spots left - I'd like to have mathpro18's Undead Scourge paladin but I'm not sure how they'd feel about roleplaying with a Lawful Evil sorceror who's taken the Undead bloodline. I'm no great judge of character but those two seem to be running full tilt into a collision. If you do decide to run with this and wonder how I'll treat a paladin who has to deal with Evil on a daily basis - my first Pathfinder character was a paladin who dealt with...anyway, the rule about travelling companions has my full sympathy! (once you go Holy Vindicator you don't have to stay 'Good' anyway)
I like the idea of a well-played CG rogue, so provided we get a front-liner I'd say Kiradia would be a fantastic addition to the party - like I asked Heaven's Agent, please check the website for details.
Just a quick note: I was hoping to use the 15 point buy method listed in the player guide - if you've already used another method please let me know.
Still on track for midweek, I've been writing a program to help me track everything which is taking up some time but on the whole everything is looking good so far. I'd like to finish character selection by tonight as once everything starts rolling in I've got to review characters and update profiles etc.
Thanks to everyone who's put their time into submitting a character idea though, you people are awesome! :)
Regards,
Dan
Hey there is nothing like a little party tension to bring a party together. I'm in if you sure you want me.
I've checked out the site and will register right after I post this post and then I should have a character to you by...well maybe tonight if I get everything figured out but if not then tomorrow afternoon at the latest...though I do have accounting to do sometime, oh the joys of getting a masters.
A kindred spirit, except for the whole "Masters" bit. Once I finished my accounting degree you couldn't drag me back to business school for love nor money.
So the invitation extends to:
Heaven's agent (accepted)
2 friends (accepted)
mathpro18 (accepted)
Kiradia (awaiting acceptance)
Party make-up: Wizard, Sorceror, Ranger, Paladin, Rogue. Given the lack of a heal-centric class I think that will be made up for by adding the extra character.
Once again, thanks to everyone who showed interest and gave me their time in presenting a character, I feel bad not being able to select all of you but time constraints prevent me from re-writing every encounter for more people.
I look forward to hearing back from Kiradia and to enjoying an adventure with some new people!
Dan
As I intended to launch into the character introductions tomorrow night my time I'm just checking that all parties will have submitted character sheets, and will be ready to begin. I'm missing three of you so far, although I'm well aware with timezone differences it could be argued that midweek to me is still Tuesday in your timezone.
Anyone's dog eat their homework? :P
*casts Resurrect Thread*
Hi all,
Had a slow start, then the server crashed because of a host problem for a day or two so I'm down a few players. If anyone is interested in becoming a mercenary who'll start off working for the temple in Harrowstone let me know what kind of character you'll be playing. The chaotic evil alignment is prohibited, the party has an inquisitor, a wizard and a ranger already.
Regards,
Dan
Paizo Fan |
I find myself with a bit of time in my PbP schedule so I'm intrigued. First thoughts would move to the obvious of playing a Paladin with both the temple and Undead connection. I'd understand if you don't want another 'Undead hater' in the group and could figure out something else to act as the meatshield.
Edit: Oathbound Paladin (Oath Againt Undeath) would be my first choice. I'll get the crunch and fluff up by the end of the day.
Black eyes peer from behind a darkly featured, unshaven and unkempt face. The tall, heavy-set man stands in attendance for the reading of Professor Lorrimor's last testament and will, but his mind is somewhere else. How in the nine hells did he end up here?
Stefan Christinel Luca was a gifted student, doing well in school while being raised by his mother. At his mother's wish, he left his home and started at an academy at the expense of a wealthy couple, but by that time he was sick of schooling and quickly dropped out. Despite putting in little effort in his studies at the academy, Stefan continued to learn on his own the ways of underground exploration, both by gathering reading material on the subject, and by selling himself as a mercenary for underground expeditions.
It seems so recently that the large man accompanied Professor Lorrimor on one of these underground expeditions. He had heard the call for capable, competent bodyguards for a scholar's exploration of a cavernous dungeon, and he was quick to make known his availability. During this venture, the large warrior became fascinated with the professor - the man's intelligence, and the man's neverending quest to increase his understanding of the world, despite the professor's already vast knowledge. At some point, Stefan gathered the courage to approach Petros Lorrimor and try to impress the professor with his own knowledge of spelunking, underground denizens, and the like. He was outclassed by the scholar, but Stefan didn't care, as he was eager to hear as much as he could. By the end of the expedition, he had befriended the professor, and thanks to Petros Lorrimor, Stefan was inspired to expand his own repetoire of knowledge. Perhaps that's why it was such a shock to himself when he had been told by an associate of the professor that Lorrimor was dead, and adding to that surprise, that Stefan himself was named in Professor Lorrimor's will.
OK, I have 3 active players already and they're about to enter the prison, a priest is recruiting anyone who will apply to investigate a problem he believes is originating from the prison. I recently did a summary post I can point players to - it's being run on a different forum.
Note: I forgot to mention all players will have to roll their characters up to level 2
Twigs, I'd prefer players in my region so roll him up and I'll take a look - you're in if you can make a LEVEL 2 character a normal GM would approve (nothing from the Book of Dark Magic or stuff, ya know)
Paizo Fan, Gerard de Juraine, and Gryphon Gold - I'll have a chat with my existing players about Paladins, Fighters and Them.
(Site we're playing on is luduswerks dot com - go to the forum. I'm half-tempted to move them over here but this forum lacks dedicated control even if it's feature-rich. Also, I get tempted into reading forum posts and then the trolls get me, too dangerous)
Thanks for the interest so far guys.
I'll be a bit late with a character. I'm rather bogged down with work this weekend, so it was a bad time. I'd hoped to throw something together quick, but it hasnt been quite so easy. Don't hold up on my account, by any means. Fair's fair, the others've beat me to the punch. That said, I should be able to have something done by Tuesday night, at the very latest.
Depending on the party makeup (and whether you accept any of the fighters above) I'd be interested in playing either a tough-as-nails Lastwall veteran (dwarf fighter, though this seems to tie in bettter with zombie movies than gothic horror...) or a Varisian conman taking advantage of peoples fear. (rogue, naturally, maybe with UC's charlatan variant, if it's on the table...).
Sorry about the delay, man.
Edit: You can email me at shag.grenade@live.com if it'd speed up the process any.
DanQnA |
Anyroom for 1 more? I'm deployed in afghanistan, so the time zone is fairly close. I honestly don't know which it is, though. Probably look at a good(ish) Cleric, but open to party.
I think the party would like a cleric - they have good feelings about the positive channel thing.
So I had a chat with some party, and have come to the conclusion myself that it would be better to take people in my time zone or who've got an idea about the start since they're coming in part way through. So with that, if Twigs, Gerard de Juraine, Gryphon Gold and Beckett want to put their character ideas somewhere I can access (got Gerard's) then feel free to register on the forum and I'll activate your accounts and give access to the role-playing forums.
www.luduswerks.com/forum
Sorry to those who showed interest but I couldn't take on more than four more players without causing some issues.
Regards,
Dan
:::EDIT::: Twigs, no problems - not a real rush at the moment, they're kind of cruising for a day or two
Same thing for me. I also checked. I am in the +0430 timezone. I can't tell if I am authorized yet or just able to log on as a temp account (screen name DarthBeckett).
Was also curious just what the party would prefere and what is already there. I am leaning towards a LG Cleric of Pharasma with a decent Wis and Cha, leader, social, buffer, healer type.
I am fairly open to play style, generally liking to play exceptions to the rule, or heroic types. Not a fan of too much combat any more than no combat, but prefer somewhere in the middle. I like good or evil, but really dislike N, especially when it is used as an excuse for evil when not normally allowed.
![]() |
I just wanted to reconfirm.
15 Point Buy, (nothing below 10)
2nd Level from PF Core, APG, and Carrion Crown PG, (and presumibly Carrion Crown AP).
2 Traits (one from the Carrion Crown AP)
Max wealth per level.
Anything else of note?
How is HP figured?
At approx what point might we come in?
Any house Rules?
Are you using Golarion or rather a generic setting with Ustalav?
Twigs |
I too have now registered. I'd also like to get a feel for the group. Gerard's build above features my two favored class choices, and I'd like to avoid stepping on any toes.
Also I believe the ruling was 'nothing below 7', which was reasonable. Nothing below 10 is... absolutely brutal, on that kind of point buy.
Gerard de Juraine |
I will re-register with my character name :) Twigs, I will be a strictly heavy armored, 2-handed weapon guy (with the option of single hand for defense), also pretty good social skills. So whatever you want is fine with me.
EDIT:Well, I guess I can't re-register. Unless there is a way to delete my original registration. As of now, my user name for luduswerks is "galahad0430".
DanQnA |
Hi guys,
You've all been authorized and had access upgraded -
It's a 15 point buy, nothing less than 7. Any traits you want from the core, advanced or player guide. Full HP on first level, rolled for levels beyond 1. I've had some severe misgivings about the 15 point buy but I'll stick with it for now. It seems to be underpowered for heroes.
You'll all meet in the professor's house - more info on forum. Wealth is also on forum, but it's rolled wealth for first level as per character creation - then add 400G for second level.
Gerard - we can modify the username so not a problem. Twigs, I think the party can handle whatever you roll up - if you have a character concept in mind then roll with it. I don't think you guys have a healer though, so magic item usage might be a skill to think about.
I play very close to the rules - if there are any 'house rules' it's probably more by mistake or misreading of the rules. One request would be to leave out excessive usage of non-English words. I'm not trying to be exclusive but I do need to be able to understand the characters intent. Lastly, using the Golarion setting.
Let me know if there are more questions,
Regards,
Dan
Hi guys,
You've all been authorized and had access upgraded -
Thanks you sir/ma'am.
You'll all meet in the professor's house - more info on forum. Wealth is also on forum, but it's rolled wealth for first level as per character creation - then add 400G for second level.
I have no issue having a sharred background, and tink it might help just get us going faster.
I don't think you guys have a healer though, so magic item usage might be a skill to think about.
I was looking at a Cleric, mix of healer/buffer/social mystic, so we should be good.
One request would be to leave out excessive usage of non-English words. I'm not trying to be exclusive but I do need to be able to understand the characters intent. Lastly, using the Golarion setting.
Just curious what exactly you mean? In reference to other languages, slang, or in character languages? Or all?
DanQnA |
Just curious what exactly you mean? In reference to other languages, slang, or in character languages? Or all?
Some of the hardcore roleplayers try use words from the 'language' of their fictional race - but I'm not that hardcore and literally don't understand half of what they're saying since I don't know what the word means, and mistakes happen in my assumptions.
