Japan Hit by Quake
Upgraded to 8.9. Tsunami waves are easily moving upstreet and probably moving 30-50 mph+.

Treppa |

The video footage gets more and more horrific as the tsunami sweeps across homes, fields, and roads.
The less intense 1923 earthquake killed 140,000. The Japanese have worked hard improving architecture and tsunami warning systems. I hope their efforts pay off, for they are surely tested by this. Best wishes to all.

Thoughts go out to everyone involved or effected by this.
Same.
The Philippines are expecting the wave, if it hits, within the half-hour the last I checked. Government was calling for everyone to move to at least 15 feet above sea level.
One nuclear power plant in Japan is on fire right now. No radiation leaks recorded, but it's the cooling system that's burning right now.
The footage that's been playing just seems unreal in its magnitude.

+1 to the thoughts, adding my prayers as well for those that survived and those that did not. Japan has worked for years upon years to be ready for something like this, I can't imagine what it would have been like without such preparedness. I was watching Japanese news from their broadcast station in NY this morning, the normally chipper anchor looked haggard, but grimly determined.

+1 to all of the above. Every video I've seen of people in the thick of it has awed me with how relatively calm and collected everyone is.
Yup we're on alert here in the Philippines. Settlements along the northeast to south coasts are being warned to move to higher ground.
Stay safe, man. How much longer are you expected to be on alert?
edit-An entire passenger train went missing on the Japanese coast. Good Lord.
Has there been any word on whether or not aid from the States is already on its way over? The tsunami missed Taiwan, and hopefully everyone else will either get that lucky or weather it well. Here's hoping.

Dear Lord,
I just learned of this and I am worried for my cousin and her husband (they've been living over in Japan... Kyoto I think) for nearly 10 years.
I haven't been able to tell if that area (district) has been impacted as well. Oh man.... I hope they are all right.
And my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone as well.

The earthquake was one of, if not the largest earthquake on record in Japan and is sending tsunamis out across the Pacific.
Hawaii is only expecting a 6 foot tsunami, and the west coast of the U.S. is expecting 3-6 foot waves. Not good, but everyone has had plenty of warning for this one, even given it's happening in the middle of the night.
The east coast of Japan has been screwed though. The images I'm seeing look as bad, if not worse than the Christmas tsunami from a few years ago.

I'll add my own humble +1 to all of the thoughts and prayers heading their way.
It looks like the initial waves are due to hit Oregon and California anywhere between 7:15am and 7:30am Pacific time this morning.
Hawaii has reported waves every 15 minutes or so, averaging around 6-7 feet (though there are concerns they could get to 9 feet in some places) - no major incidents there as of yet, and most people heeded the warning and got away from the shorelines.
I've been watching the footage that's gotten out. Seeing the shots from the helicopters that were on the Japanese coast as the tsunami came in. All the cars trying to race away from it...

SOme good news- just got my semi-daily e-mail from j-list.com and it reveals that the j-list office and staff members are safe, as are their families. They have a HUGE crack in their wall, but not much else damage. They(meaning japanese people in general) are using twitter and other internet based communication applications to keep in touch with friends and loved ones, people with loved ones in japan should check twitter and other such sites.

I heard on another board that this earthquake is largest earthquake on record for Japan and the 5th ranked worldwide.

I'm thinking Japan had a worse one about a century ago, if not more.

You're probably thinking of the Great Kanto Earthquake. Not as bad in magnitude (though 7.9 is not something to dismiss like that!), but it was much closer to the city, and more importantly, Japan was much less prepared to deal with it. I heard on the news last night that the main problem was the traditional construction of buildings... not only were they weak to the shock waves themselves, but they were largely made of wood, so mass havok (and death) was caused by huge outbreaks of fires.
I'm amazed at how few lives have been lost, considering the intensity of this quake. Possibly the most terrifying aspect of this earthquake is the fact that Tokyo has something like a 70% chance of getting one like this in its direct vicinity sometime within the next few decades.

Was watching The Mentalist last night at about 10:50 PM, Pacific, when they cut in with live footage of the tsunami hitting Japan.
Here in the SF Bay Area, a couple of the stations that do news at 11:00, did nothing but quake/tsunami coverage, then strangely signed off. So I switched to another station that kept coverage up all night.
Around 3:00 AM, they upgraded us from tsunami watch to tsunami warning. The USGS (which happens to be stationed in my neighborhood) did not seem too worried about a tsunami, but the news people sure went crazy. Long story short, by about 10:00 AM the supposed flood had never materialized and a lot of people had driven up the mountain and parked there for nothing.
Santa Cruz harbor got the worst of it. Just a lot of boats coming off their moorings and bumping into each other.
Local news spazzed out to scare people into watching and then kept up the self-important nonsense all the while real people were/are really suffering and struggling in Japan. Kind of makes me sick. Probably won't watch the local stations for awhile after this.
Hopefully, they'll point their cameras back to where people really need help again, now.

Here's Hoping...Aust gov is trying to locate 150+ Australians who were living in the Affected Coastal Area. A lot of folks who need to check in if they can.
The Reactor is at 1000x safe levels (internal), 8x safe levels (external). It is not having a melt down - just having trouble cooling down the core during shutdown because diesil pumps failed when the reactor was washed over by the tidal wave.

The Australian government is sending the search and rescue teams that just got back from Christchurch, to assist the Japanese in any way they need.

Analysis of the efforts to stabilise the reactors It should be noted that when I tried to access the article the server was too busy.

And from the Guardian:
Yaroslov Shtrombakh, a Russian nuclear expert, said a Chernobyl-style meltdown was unlikely.
"It's not a fast reaction like at Chernobyl," he said. "I think that everything will be contained within the grounds, and there will be no big catastrophe."
In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded and caught fire, sending a cloud of radiation over much of Europe.
Pressure has been building up in Fukushima reactor it's now twice the normal level and Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency told reporters Saturday that the plant was venting "radioactive vapors." Officials said they were measuring radiation levels in the area. Wind in the region is weak and headed northeast, out to sea, according to the Meteorological Agency.
The reactor in trouble has already leaked some radiation: Operators have detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1's control room.
Ryohei Shiomi, a nuclear official, said that each hour the plant was releasing the amount of radiation a person normal absorbs in a year.
He has said that even if there were a meltdown, it wouldn't affect people outside a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius an assertion that might need revising if the situation deteriorates. Most of the 51,000 residents living within the danger area had been evacuated, he said.

I just spoke with my Aunt, and her daughter and husband are okay.
That's such a relief knowing, and I didn't want to ask in case she didn't know anything or couldn't reach her daughter (my cousin).
My thoughts and prayers still go out to anyone with friends, family, loved ones that might be affected by this. And to the people of Japan as well.

I can't fathom the devastation Japan experienced.
Link to a truly horrifying site: before and after sattelite pictures of coastal areas hit by the tsunami in Japan: http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/japan-quake-2011/beforeafter.htm
In good news, I heard from Yumi, my best friend from Japan, and she's still living in Kagawa-ken, and is fine. She asked for prayers and well wishes for Japan. I inquired after her friends and family, but haven't heard back.

The images of such disaster are disconcerting and truly frightening.
I wish tragedies like this could do at least one good thing and remember (or teach) politicians and other "power-wielding" people all over the world the true reasons why they must do their job good, rather than always thinking of their own patethic interests.
May the dead rest in peace and may the survivors have the strength and opportunity of returning to a life as good as possible.

Geez, the news is just getting worse and worse from Japan. So many people missing (many, many of them no doubt dead), people without homes, heating, electricity, food ... and now the latest explosion and radiation threat at the nuclear power plant.
While the Japanese government is saying the radiation threat is only a danger within a 30km radius of the plant, I have heard from friends in the Philippines and Indonesia that there is minor panic in those countries as there has been some (hopefully mis-)information that they are going to be hit by dangerous radiation levels there. I’m fairly sure that’s not correct – from all I have heard through official channels even in the event of a full meltdown the dangerous levels of radiation will be fairly isolated. I hate to think of what it would mean for Tokyo if that were not the case.

The Singaporean Press has confirmed that the nuclear rumors in South East Asia are a malicious hoax.
What Nuclear Rumors? All I had heard is that the Second Reactor had blown, Hundreds in the Sendai area were exposed to Radiation - though the worst afected were being flown out for medical, and that the Ronald Regan Aircraft Carrier had detected Cesium.
Did I miss something?

There's a nasty set of rumors floating around South East Asia about mass contamination of the region.
The reactors are blown, but the damage is nowhere on the scale that scaremongers are spreading. There was apparently panic in the streets in Indonesia.

A third explosion occured earlier today and J-officials fear that it might have damaged the core. If the core blows then we have a Chernobyl scale problem.
