Paladin -- The Man, not the Class

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 2

Disclaimer: I have not yet play-tested the gunslinger class; my GM is adamantly anti-firearms. However, I've been following the discussion of the class with some interest here on the forums, and have a suggestion for a Grit feat. I was not thinking of the game when the idea first struck me, it started when I was discussing old Western TV shows with a coworker, and realized that one particular show's title would lend itself well to a gunsliinger/grit feat.

Hence, the feat "Will Travel". I would suggest it have No Name as a prerequisite feat. It's a limited version of the Teleport spell: It can only be used a limited number of times (1/month per level, maybe less, 1/year per level?), cannot be used while in combat, applies only to the gunslinger and her mount, and the target location has to be the outskirts of a settlement, city, castle, or other built-up area of civilization.

The Exchange

While I am not sure it would work in most games very well, the idea did put a big smile on my face.

Thanks, that at least is something.

It reminds me a bit of something a friend who has been gaming even longer than I have told me about: An ability in an RPG that was a bit tongue-in-cheek; it may have been a western supplement to "It Came from the Late Late Show"... If a character left one town on horseback, and took out a guitar and began singing, by the end of the song they were at their destination, regardless of the distance.

While that is kinda neat, the only problem is that the gunslinger is meant to be all extraordinary abilities only. No supernatural, spell-like, etc.. Feel free to do that in your games though. Or, as I remember from an issue of Cracked Magazine, just do what Indiana Jones does and travel across the globe via red line on a map.

Explain, then, the "No Name" feat's description.

The feat isn't a requirement of the class. That's compairing apples to bricks.

The gunslinger by its self isn't supernatural. The feat is spell like or whatever.

I don't see the "why" of such a feat. You're talking about using a spell to handle something that's pretty much done "between frames" any way. Now that doesn't say that you can't give some kind of artifact like say the Travelstone of Destiny, or a curse to a particular gunfighter, but making it a standard class ability would violate the design theme of the class.

Would you please quote for me where I suggested "Will Travel" as a requirement of the class? I must have missed it while I was typing. I was under the impression I suggested it as a feat, just like No Name. Heck, I coulda swore I even suggested making No Name a prereq to TAKE Will Travel.

I mean, if you're going to criticize the feat, give me valid reasons that don't include saying that it doesn't match the flavor ofthe class when it is in the same flavor as something already available to the class.

The "Why is specifically for flavor, to codify the "between frames" nature of the old gunsliger stories... I have known GM's who would expect you to role play out EVERY travel between locations, and this allows the Gunslinger to occasionally skip that. It's all about the ability to add a little more of the storytelling flavor of the genre that inspired the class.

And AGAIN, please, please read what *I* wrote, not what has been assumed. I suggested it as a feat, not a standard class ability.

I'd see "Will Travel" more as a Feat that gives the Gunslinger a Mount such as a horse and a +2 to Handle Animal and Ride checks with it. That is just me though.

Yeah, I could see that as well.
