Gunslinger with a Musket

Rules Questions

I'm trying to figure out what happens if you want to use a Full Attack with a Musket (or a Heavy Crossbow for that matter).

since you can only load 1 bullet at a time, and it takes a full-round action (or less with rapid reload of course), is it possible to attack more than once per round with the musket?

Thanks in advance!

Vosche

as of now no, but there is the lightning reload feat in the apg that lets you do a full attack with a crossbow.

Actually the APG feat that lets you get full attack with crossbows is called Crossbow Mastery.

For muskets, currently there is only the Lightning Reload Deed feat from playtest to load a musket as a free action, and you need to spend grit each time you use it.

Liberty's Edge

For muskets, using alchemical cartridges drops the reload action by one step. so having rapid reload and alchemical cartridges will allow you to reload as a move action instead of full-round.

Liberty's Edge

Lightning reload does not consume grit. It just needs 1 grit in your "pool" in order to use it.

Musket Master:

Rapid Reloader - At 1st level, a musket master gains Rapid Reload (muskets) as a bonus feat.

Rapid Reload - The time required for you to reload your chosen type of weapon is reduced to a free action (for a hand or light crossbow), a move action (for heavy crossbow or one-handed firearm), or a standard action (two-handed firearm). Reloading a crossbow or firearm still provokes attacks of opportunity. If you have selected this feat for a hand crossbow or light crossbow, you may fire that weapon as many times in a full-attack action as you could attack if you were using a bow.

Fast Musket - At 3rd level, as long as the musket master has 1 grit point, she can reload any two-handed firearm as if it were a one-handed firearm. This deed replaces the utility shot deed.

Reload Speed:
Musket - Full Round
Rapid Reloader - Standard action
Fast Musket - Move action
Alchemical Cartridges - Free action

Just don't roll those 1-3s on your attack rolls...

For a vanilla-flavored gunslinger, no. You're going to have to go with a pistol to get your full range of attacks. But having a one-shot musket as backup for when your pistol range just doesn't cut it, or after a misfire, will help you adapt.

Just like any other archetype, a musket master is going to be better at one thing (shooting muskets) than its base class, but not as adaptable.

Whether that adaptability is worth it to you is the real question.

Though you also did ask about a Heavy Crossbow.

You can get a Full-Round attack at Level 1, too!

Human Swashbuckler Rouge, Level 1

(Base) Point-Blank Shot - +1 Attack/Damage within 30 ft.
(Human) Rapid Shot - Another attack, All attacks at -2
(Combat Trick) Rapid Reload - Heavy Crossbow to reload is a Move Action
(Combat Trick) Crossbow Mastery - Heavy Crossbow to reload is a Free Action, do not provoke Attack of Opportunity for reloading while in combat.

The wonders of having 4 Feats at first level...

Liberty's Edge

Oh, my poor feat-starved gnome gunslinger. :(

It is worth noting that Musket Master gives you all need to full attack with muskets.

You are reading the swashbuckler wrong. He does not get Combat Trick twice at first level. At first level he gains the ability to take Combat Trick twice as a talent. This is important because:
Quote:
A rogue cannot select an individual talent more than once...

So the archetype is allowing a Swashbuckler rogue to bypass that restriction only for Combat Trick and only to select Combat Trick twice.

The earliest a Swashbuckler could select the second Rogue Talent is 4th level so that is when you could take your second Combat Trick.

It is still a nice Archetype because you can front load it.
