Hello all about ready to leave for the night for a dresden files d20 modern game. I think I will be bored shitless, however since it has been some time since I was able to be there I have no recourse over what gets played. Hope I have a good time none the less.

Hey, taig (or anyone else into probabilities). I have what should be a simple question, but it's been so long since I have done stats that I'm not certain which formula to use.

Say that there is an 87% probability that event A will occur in 24 possible slots. For example, somebody is exhausted and sleeping. There is an 87% chance that they will wake up sometime during a 24 hour period. What is the chance of it happening each hour? Once they awaken, they can't do so again, and it's kinda confusing me.

See, that's what I am thinking, too. It seems too easy. Problem is, if this is correct, the RL numbers I'm using don't work. Arg.

This depends on whether or not the 87% chance is evenly divided between the 24 hours.

If it is evenly divided (the same possibility at any given time) then the answer would be (0.87)/(24 hours)= 0.03625 as stated above.

For a non-evenly distributed probability integration of a properly normalized function (or the answer could be normalized after being completed) is required. Please note that this approach does give the same answer using evenly distributed problems.

calculus and probabilities:

ex.

Given a constant function whose value is (0.87) of occurring in a 24 hour time frame, find the probability of occuring during any one hour period.

First, being constant, (0.87) for 24 hours, would give a constant function of (0.87)/24 hours or 0.03625/hour of occurring.

Then you would integrate the function over any one hour period...

Integrate from time a to time b, f(x)dx. This means find the antiderivative of function f(x), evaluate the antiderivative at x=a and at x-b, followed by taking the difference: value at a-value at b.

or, IOW

Integrate from time 1 to time 2 (a one hour period of time), the constant function (0.03625 chance of waking per hour). Integrating requires finding the antiderivative.

The antiderivative of a constant function is the constant, in this case (0.03625/hour) times the variable, in this case time, t:

(0.03625/hour)*t, evaluated at time a and b and the difference obtained.

So, if you wanted to find the chance someone awoke during the third hour (the time from the end of the second hour to the end of the third one, note that the first hour would be from zero to 1...) then you would evaluate the antiderivative at three and subtract the value at 2.

In this case:

(0.0.03625/hour)*(3 hours)-(0.87/hour)*(2 hours)
(0.03625/hour)(3-2)
(0.0.03625)(1)
0.03625

or, for a 24 hour period from time 0 to 24:
(0.3625/hour)*(24-0)
(0.3625/hour)*24
0.87

Note about the function: This linear function will eventually become larger than 1 when integrated over larger time periods: thirty hours gives 1.0875. Dividing 1 by 0.03625 gives an answer of 27.5862 hours (with more decimal places, not sure where it ends) to reach a probability of 1 for having awakened during that period. But, it is only defined over a 24 hour period. Is there a zero chance of happening outside that timeframe? Does it continue until the 27+ time mentioned above at which time a person wakes up for certain? Or, is it deliberately not defined for that time period? These questions are PART of what I meant when initially mentioning a properly normalized function.

Thing, that's perfect, thank you. Yes, it's evenly divided and the function 'resets' after 24 hours because of the way the probability is defined (per day). So it is just as simple as it seems? Sweet.

Sometimes what seems straightforward in math, isn't.

Awesome! Was that a later adventure or is it from the 1st/2vd ed days?

I want to run a Dungeon campaign one of these days, using strictly adventures from the mag.

Yup, not too many posts.

Uggh, coversions.

I have found that anymore I have the most fun if I just 98% freestyle the games I run. I just figure out vaguely what obstacles/people the PCs will encounter, come up with some names, and write down a few numbers. Then, I wing the rest. It seems that when I "prepare" stuff or use a module I kind of unintentionally push toward the things prepared without giving much time to those not and it feels like a boring railroad, IMO. I guess I should consider myself lucky that, for me, spending less time means a better campaign anymore.

It's from the Paizo era, I've wanted to run this one for a while. Let the heroes defend the crypt from the tomb raiders for a change!

I've run several campaigns out of the mag over the years, and it plays out pretty well. More of a "wandering adventurer" feel than the "gotta save the world", which is nice IMO.

I actually am only missing 12 Dungeon magazines, and those are the real early issues. :)

Do you generally run with pc treasure values similar to the level values in the book or different? I always use a much lower number of magic items back from the days when I played first edition...

I tend to actually add a little more, generally mundane clothing and art type objects, as well as some jewelery. I'm lucky in the fact that they will keep the vast majority of that stuff as mementos instead of selling it. And this way they can stay around the standard wealth in gear, but I'm a little stingy with major magic.
