Sorry Taig, wish you better luck.

Hmm I seem to be getting nekked a lot.

I'm largely annoyed because I did waste a day off for a 1-hour interview (should have been 2 hours, but the entirety of the second hour's group was out of the office) with people who seemed uninterested in being there--even before they started interviewing me. :P

That sucks. Sounds like they found their candidate, but "had to" finish up the interviews they'd scheduled. I will say, at least they let you know it was a "no". That's not always so common nowadays...

Oh, yeah, I agree. At first, I thought I wasn't going to hear anything, so it is nice to know definitively what's going on.

an unfortunate truth. Companies are so churlish nowadays.

Interesting article

Just for the FAWTL parents out there. Being the "perfect" parent can screw up your kid just as much as not parenting at all. The gist I got from it is that if you're stressed that you're not perfect, but are at least trying, your probably the best type of parent.

Also adds weight to the whole "entitlement" argument going on about these kids today.

Question for those in retail/restaurant management -

To the best of my somewhat limited knowledge(I have a food handler's permit), very little. She's going to have to take her complaints to the chief of chiefs at her job, whoever that is. She'll get a reputation as a "problem"/whistleblower, but if this is one of her first days on the job, it will help to keep future problems from happening.

She's been there for months, and does a good job, which is why they've been dumping on her a lot lately to cover other shifts. During summer it wasn't a problem, but I wanted to nip this in the bud since she's back in school.

This kind of stuff is probably why that store has constant turnover of employees.

I used to work and manage at Fazoli's.

The laws vary from state to state.

For instance, in Kentucky IIRC, employees under 18 are limited to 40 hours per week (no OT) and those 15 years old are limited to something like 20 hours per week. The available hours might change between the school year and summer.

Sounds like your daughter is 15 if she needs a work permit. Is that correct? (May change state to state...)

If so, there is probably a legal limit on the number of hours she can work in a day, probably eight on weekends and maybe fewer during the week when school is in.

If there is another problem, after talking to them about it, call the department of labor. Things will happen in a hurry because with hours worked and such there is documentation of violations.

My guess is that it was not a knee-jerk reaction. They probably broke the law and do not want it to happen again.

As an example of child labor laws, here is a Kentucky Child Labor Laws

pasted from the link:

Age 14 and 15
The following applies to all minors fourteen (14) and fifteen (15) years of age enrolled in school or participating in a home school program.

*Limited exemptions are provided for apprentices and student-learners under specified standards.

After browsing that list in the spoiler, I would almost guarantee that they broke the law. Mistakes happen and as long as there is no ongoing problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

As a note, most restaurants have chronic high turnover. Some less than others, but they all pretty much have it at a much higher rate than other industries and there are a whole list of reasons that can be attributed to.

Yes, they did not release any info at first. Just man picked up kid and gave him a ride to school and showed up "15" minutes later and then was arrested several hours later for trying to "get a tire changed" at a service station. This city is still getting over BTK, so a lot of people are still jumpy about stuff.

Wow. Sounds like a nut job.

Good that you get paid overtime. Unpaid overtime is pretty much a reality in my profession unfortunately.

The last two Ravenloft games I played in (that lasted more than a session or two), one my character spent several sessions pretty much dead and carried around by the rest of the group while they looked for a cure for the poison he had in his system (I took over an NPC during that time), the other time we had so many character deaths it wasn’t funny. One guy had his character(s) die I think about 7 times in one way or another over about 4 sessions. My character was the only one to ‘survive’ a long drawn out TPK in that game, but he was captured by Azalin, so I’m not sure that his survival was measured very long after the game ended.

She's 17. In MI high school students 'have to have' a work permit, and are limited to 20 hours a week while school is in session.

Though she's bummed about less hours, I'm happy about it. Still, the mgr that made the schedule booboo is the same one that 'promised' her a raise that never showed up. Sounds like a dufus. Eventually she'll learn how to spot them and stand up for herself.

Good to see that you are on top of it and aware.

As a side note, not abiding by child labor laws makes a company look really bad. Not following through on protecting kids make those responsible in the labor department look really bad. Looking out for kids is something usually easy for those responsible to get worked up about. All in all, as long as there is documentation of what is going on, heads can be made to roll.

Best of luck with her continued work.

Later to everyone.
