Growing up, I really hated birthdays. Still don't celebrate them for the most part.

But now on the other side of 40 years, I vastly prefer them to funerals. The balance of each certainly seems to shift as you go.

If I recall correctly, each would get so long it would start causing havoc with the messageboards. PMG would sadly have to shut it down. Then he finally figured out a way to prevent the havoc.

It's always a mixture of happiness and melancholy to see a couple of "little-known" bands you've loved for years explode into the public eye.

Babymetal and Electric Callboy (née Eskimo Callboy) were both "niche" bands -- yes, Babymetal might be one of the biggest acts in Japan, but when we saw them in San Francisco it was to a lukewarm crowd of maybe 1500 people, and there were plenty of empty seats. Electric Callboy is an amazing band just hitting its stride. (EDIT: Coincidentally both bands formed in 2010.)

Then they did the best collab I've seen since Aerosmith and Run DMC. 5 million hits and growing. Had we had foreknowledge, we would have flown to Japan just to see their concert, but we didn't.

But at the rate this thing is exploding, the days of 500-1500-person venues in the U.S. is probably over for both bands. And I only really like the smaller venues because they're so much more personal.

Ah, well. It's still an awesome song and video.

That was my understanding as well. we would basically get to a certain number of posts and the database couldn't handle it.

I vaguely recall him posting some time ago before my absence that this thread had bypassed the length of the first five combined. Which is a huge statement about how much he had improved the boards' mechanics in the time since.

We got done with a small job, the lady gave us a 20 dollar tip, I gave it to Crookshanks, she worked hard and earned it (and it's a common practice if I have someone working with me and it's a small tip (less than 40) I give them the whole thing as a morale boost).

Damn.

This is a true blow. Losing not just the PMG, but a fellow Gary.

May he rest peacefully.

It's good to see so many again though the circumstances are bad. Someone said that about funerals once.

Eh, last time I was to funeral, it was a slideshow of people being much older than they should be, aging badly.

Ah, gamers!

As I mentioned, we have a rotating group of kids between 1 and 15 living next door.

As I mentioned, the weather's turned nice so I'm opening the windows every day.

This morning I got up and to my horror learned that the kids hadn't closed the windows before running Impus Minor's game. Which, of course, devolved into an argument about vibrators as improvised weapons.

I've asked the kids to please make sure the windows are closed when they game. Because gamers be gamers, and there's no way you can possibly head off THAT conversation.

When I was a kid, I found the lyrics to the song "The Wells Fargo Wagon" from "The Music Man" deeply confusing.
It's a sloppily-crafted song, but nowhere in it does it mention the people actually ordering and/or paying for the things they receive, so I believed for years that the real-life Wells Fargo wagon was a mystical cross between Santa, UPS, and the lottery.

I mention this because WW has a bizarre relationship with Ebay wherein he will buy things and then promptly forget about them, and, incidentally, choose the cheapest and slowest possible shipping method.

So, what frequently happens is a package arrives, and I say, "What did you order?" and he answers, "I have absolutely no idea! Let's find out!"

Had a wonderful lunch with Scint and Orthos this afternoon. Even though we've never met nor even exchanged a photo, we knew who each other were on sight. Which was weird.

So I got a text this morning from a gal I used to teach with fifteen years ago, telling me that it has come to light that our former employer never paid the Social Security she deducted from our paychecks. I'm not sure for how many years. She's invited me to a private, encrypted WhatsApp group with current and former employees to discuss.

Yes. Also, considering that this is the same boss who laid me off illegally while I was on maternity leave after Hermione was born, completely unsurprising.

Yes, obsessive-compulsive speaking, but don't you get a Social Security statement every year where you can check your income from previous years?

I did a login for the web site and I can say, "Show me my reported income for xxxx" and immediately see whether I got SS or not.

Just making sure.

*sigh*

Both of my parents were screwed of some of their pension payments in the early-to-mid 90ties, by unscrupulous employers.

I was in my 30s when I worked for her school and it wasn't something I was paying attention to.

That's my point. I can sign in right now and see my 1996 pay totals. I didn't have to have been paying attention in 1996. If you know the year and that year's total is $0, you know you were cheated.

EDIT: For example, I just signed in and my 1996 earning total as reported to Social Security was $19,015, and my records go back to 1987. So the Social Security Administration keeps some good records.

Speaking of bicyclists making humanity hate them, one of our long-standing mysteries has been solved in about the most appalling way possible.

Some of you may remember that a few years ago we got a "move it or get a ticket" note from the police for parking in our driveway. We knew that someone had complained, but nobody was willing to 'fess up and many other people have parked in their driveways blocking the sidewalk since then.

This morning as GothBard and I headed to the Farmer's Market we were nearly hit by a bicyclist racing along on the sidewalk (illegal in California). He slammed on the brakes and started going off in great anger about the car behind us that was blocking the driveway. "Did you see that car blocking the driveway? Did you have to go around it?"
"No."
He got even angrier. "What did you do? Climb over it?"
"No. We live here."
"Oh."

Frustrated that we weren't going to be of any help to him, he went over and started taking pictures of the car blocking the sidewalk and obviously texting them to someone (presumably the city).

So:
(1) He doesn't live around here.
(2) He rides his bicycle on the sidewalk at a speed high enough to endanger pedestrians.
(3) He takes it upon himself to report cars blocking the sidewalk to the police, disrupting parking throughout our neighborhood.

Just met him this morning. Hate him.

Hi, I know I don't belong here at the cool kids table but I needed to show up and offer solidarity in sending waves of rage toward self-entitled bicyclists who literally break the f@+%ing law all the time but insist other people "share the road" with them (by which, in my experience, means "let bicyclists nearly kill you, a pedestrian standing where you belong and minding their own business, and then get mad at you for being in their way").

Yeah, I’ve posted here a few times, that’s gonna drop the coolness average down a few points.

All it takes is the right environment.
Considering that I was bullied and occasionally beaten up for being a nerd in Elementary, Middle and High School, it was quite a shock to discover that my colleagues at my current school consider me one of the "cool kids". But they're Montessori teachers, so all I can say is, to paraphrase Erasmus, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed nerd is king.
