So we leave on Friday.
Today is member day at the zoo (the train and carousel are free, and we get to go in an hour early).
Tomorrow is WW's last day off with the kids before we go.
Wednesday I have my last responsibility at work until August.
Thursday is Val's appointment (finally), and the last Thursday night dinner at Grandma's.
And Friday, very early, we drive.
Technically, I made the entire drive last August, with the kids (or at least one of them at a time) while WW drove the Uhaul, but at least he was there in case anything went wrong. To be making the trip entirely solo feels very disconcerting. But we can't afford to fly, and after this, I'm probably not going to see my family again until next summer, so... time to be adventurous.

Just a heads up everything on that kids album is fine but anything on other albums you will definitely want to vet first and just avoid the the star wars/trek album all together.

So this is weird.
Getting ready for the big road trip to Oregon with the kids, I bought them a massive set of audiobooks on cd for the car on ebay for a ridiculously cheap price, because it's the one thing guaranteed to keep them mostly calm and happy.
But WW is having me switch cars with him because he thinks taking my old Honda there and back again is just asking for trouble, and at least his Kia is under full warranty.
The snag I didn't expect: the Kia doesn't have a cd player.
But I have the little boom box from their room that plays cds, and WW dug through the garage to find the box of random things he kept in his old van and found a 150 watt AC power inverter. So I'm going to plug the inverter into the cigarette lighter, plug the cord from the boom box into that, and hopefully it will all work out. I'm doing a test run today on our way to the zoo. Hopefully nothing catches fire.
We did the inverter thing all the time taking the kids down to Disneyland over the years to power the laptop.
Worked in a 2003 Echo and a 2006 Prius; hopefully it'll be fine in a 20xx Kia.

We wrapped up the first story arc of Dirk Gently last night, and I have to say, it grows on you.
After the first couple of episodes (that Shiro made us watch), we were wondering why he was making us watch it.
By the time we got through episode 4 or so we were hooked, and binge-watched the rest of the story arc last night.
Wonderfully low-key, quirky, and with a bunch of characters you start off despising, but somehow grow to like in spite of themselves.
I recommend giving it 3 episodes to see whether you can tolerate it. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but we're finding it rather delightful.

Grr... It's hard to describe just how frustrating it is to actually encounter an "old age" thing.
So on Wednesday I cleared the storage facility and closed it out, and when I woke up Thursday morning the right side of my back was sore. It didn't matter; there was work to do, so I ibuprofened my way through it on Thursday and Friday.
Well, I didn't do *anything* physical on Saturday or Sunday (other than fairly typical walking and stretching) and the right side of my back is still sore.
So yep, pulled/strained a muscle and it'll probably take weeks to heal, putting me as "annoyingly sore" going into the Europe trip.
Impus Major will never learn of this. He would be insufferably smug.
EDIT: According to Google, I've strained my Latissimus dorsi m., which helps my understanding not at all.

Yeah, good luck with that.
I have spent a lifetime telling the kids, "If you aren't helping, you're in the way. So either help or get the heck out of there. Nothing in between is acceptable." (Yes, I can't stand gawkers.)
And yet the kids are always still constantly in the way because something happens and they want to watch. And watching is always in the way.

At the second job, were something like this to happen, it would be an easy choice to move the electronics.
At the main job, as I am legally responsible for all physical charts that come into my possession and are not in the central storage area. There has been a (not so) funny running joke about a person's chart vs. one's own life as to which you should save in an emergency. We are VERY VERY SLOWLY moving towards an electonic format, but even when we do fully switch, the question of what to do with the physical charts that remain. Our roof is meh currently and we have had some offices get damaged due to leaks. There remains a good question as to what to do if the chart room floods or is irreparably damaged if the roof should fail.

So, I'm *sure* this one is political.
Yes, there's a housing shortage in desirable areas. But that fuels speculators looking to try to turn a quick buck. And that fuels bidding wars. And that fuels an affordable housing shortage.
It's a circle of stupidity that I just consider myself blessed to have avoided.
Thinking back on the whole, "We aren't going to pay $500,000 for a house, no matter HOW nice it is," just sounds naive these days. And that was only 17 years ago...

So... this is the bad part of living in Albany.
Impus Minor asked for (and received) a lockpick set and instructions for Christmas, and put in enough time that he could first pick a clear lock (leading to the delightful quote, "All those people living in houses with clear locks had better watch out!"), then an opaque one. But I'd guess his total practice time at 20-30 hours; nothing life-altering, just a quick hobby.
On Saturday we went to Rivoli for dinner. While we were out, Impus Minor got home. He never carries a key. He wasn't carrying his lockpick set. So he went to Red-Headed Girl Next Door's, got a pair of bobby pins, and set to work. On both the deadbolt *and* the main lock.
He was there for 45 minutes. During which a woman and her young son walked by and the boy asked, "Mommy, what is that boy doing?"
To which she replied, "I don't know, son. I don't recognize him from this neighborhood."
But she didn't call the cops.
It took him 45 minutes, but Impus Minor picked BOTH our main lock and our deadbolt with a pair of fricking bobby pins. And according to Hi (once a certified locksmith), we'd bought a very good brand. Locks just aren't made the way they used to be, and even a semi-skilled pick can get them open. (No knock on Impus Minor, but the fact that he can pick my front door with a pair of bobby pins with only a couple dozen hours practice is... worrisome.)
So yeah, locking the kids out of the house is no longer an option for us.

Walmart and I assume places like best buy have this little devise or at least used to that would let you play your music device on your car radio. You just set it to the station. It can be a bit static-y.
It's also possible they don't make them anymore because That's some retro tech by now I think.
Nope, they still make them. I use them regularly.

Locks work by preventing entrance to people who would jump at occasion of unlocked door and slow down entrance of those who are prepared. They won't really stop someone who is dedicated and prepared to enter, except by giving time for witnesses to react.

I have hit too many unexpected surprises with lawnmowers' blades. I will never wear shorts or sandals (or go nekkid) when mowing, not even on the 95°+F, 80%+ humidity days.
If you persist in nekkid lawnmowing, you aughta at least include some sort of medical expenses rider in the contract.

Locks work by preventing entrance to people who would jump at occasion of unlocked door and slow down entrance of those who are prepared. They won't really stop someone who is dedicated and prepared to enter, except by giving time for witnesses to react.
Is owning lockpicks legal in Cali? Here it is illegal to own them unless you are a locksmith by trade.
Yeah, I like to point out to people who are uber-paranoid about security that I'm 52 and can kick down any wooden back door you care to show me, which is *ALL* of them around here. A door is a minor 10-second inconvenience for me.
And yeah, you can order lockpick sets from Amazon and have them delivered, along with how-to books.
I thought they were illegal, but Impus Minor proved me wrong.

Cheap.I have hit too many unexpected surprises with a mower. I will never wear shorts or sandals (or go nekkid) when mowing, not even on the 95°+F, 80%+ humidity days.
Seconded, even if I wasn't the type to always wear jeans or other kinds of long pants any time I leave the house regardless of weather.

Zelda has a 15-yr-old who mows her lawn for the continued ability to live at home.
Occasionally he'll mow my yard for some cash. Occasionally he's also refused to do it because he just didn't feel like it. Teenagers. Can't live with them, can't lock them out of the house without the police showing up.
damn these teenagers putting me put of business before I even start!

Speaking of workplace violence and people not being helpful...
While I was evacuating equipment from the flooded areas, someone walked up to me and complained that someone else was having trouble logging into a computer. While I was holding a computer with water splashing down on the desk behind me.
Exact reply:
"Do you honestly believe that's something I'm going to care about right now?"
one of these days, Vany, I am going to figure out how to give my friends super powers that they can use only once.
I will give you two. Time travel and force choke.

So... this is the bad part of living in Albany.
I don't recognize him from this neighborhood."But she didn't call the cops.
It took him 45 minutes, but Impus Minor picked BOTH our main lock and our deadbolt with a pair of fricking bobby pins. And according to Hi (once a certified locksmith), we'd bought a very good brand. Locks...
You gotta be s##+ting me.
I don't think I have to tell you how differently that would have gone down in my neighborhood. Or outside of my neighborhood. Or if I tried to do it in Vany's neighborhood. Or Captain Yesterday's neighborhood. Clothed for that last one, as it is probably cooler there
