This is also posted in the TV section, but I thought it also fit here as well! It's always cool to see our hobby in pop culture / media ...

The TV show Community (very good show, by the way) is doing a special AD&D episode tonight (Thursday)! It looks really interesting - everyone should check it out!

It's on NBC tonight, before The Office

Here's the commercial:

Community D&D Episode

Yeah, I'm full of curiousity. Set the DVR for it last night!

Hmmm ...

I made a point of pointing out that this was already posted in the TV section, but I thought it also fit in Gamer Life as well since it involved our hobby in pop culture / media ...

Really sorry to see someone decided to move here to the TV forum anyway!

I love this show. Can't wait to see Abed as a DM.

Chances are someone simply saw the thread title and acted based on that.

This was my first time to watch Community. Funny stuff. I thought it was better than that British show where they played D&D for the businessmen they were trying to attract.

Meh. I've never seen fewer dice rolled in a game. They had one d20 for the table? Rolled maybe five times? No damage dice? And this was AD&D, not even a d20 game! It may have been an RPG, but it bore little to no resemblance to D&D.

I have just started watching Community recently. I will look out for this episode, though I imagine it will be a while before we get it here in Australia.

That episode of the IT Crowd you refer to was funny ... I wouldn’t say that the depiction of the game or gameplay was that accurate (though perhaps not far off for some groups), but I found the episode very funny – generally I can take or leave that particular show.

Not having seen the episode, I must say I would be more interested in how they depicted the game and its players and culture in general, rather than whether they got details like dice and character sheets quite right.

Mothman: I enjoyed the IT Crowd episode, just this one more. Also, I'd say that, even though it was in a humorous context, they got closer to the spirit of roleplaying. (And no, not b/c my group plays out in detail scenes with elven maids who drive hard bargains...)

Joana: Did you notice that otherwise, they went all old school? The DM made ALL the rolls! Damn!

I see what you did there...

First time I ever watched an episode of Community myself. Overall it looked like the show has some good writing and was definitely funny in parts. I take it they are all at a community college, but what is the group's association? Are they all students and/or instructors?

I thought they hit the style of the old school AD&D games I recall playing pretty well. I enjoyed Chevy Chase as the evil Pierce.

I don't believe the Draconis module they played was an actual module but they did a good job with the graphics making it look like an old TSR adventure for first edition. Most of the other books looked like the real deal.

Yeah, we weren't that old school when we were playing AD&D; we all rolled our own dice.

They're all students. It's a study group/surrogate family. I'm a huge fan of the show, I think the writing is phenomenal. The range in episode tones they do is astounding, and they manage to make it all fit together.

Same here, Joana.

The Exchange

oh my god...

D&D and Homosexuality in the same...did this just go penthouse?

Queen of the Demonweb Pits and Scud the Disposable Assassin?!?!?!?

Awesome!...oh, wait Huzzah!
Am I doing this right?

The episode is currently available to watch at Hulu.com. It was my first time seeing the show as well, I thought the game itself was hilarious, but the reason behind it was a bit dark.

"So you're all gonna just sit here and let that hate crime happen?!" LOL!

It's was great HOW the DM added Chevy Chase's character to the adventure too!

The Exchange

I just saw it on Hulu! Hilarious! Especially Pierce's little monologue with Abed in the supply closet.

Liberty's Edge

I've seen every episode of this show and they're all great. This one was especially awesome just because of the connection. Great comedy show.

Rewatched it.
Here's an update on the dice question: The scenes are not consistent. The DM does have a dice bag and a set of blue dice, not simply the d20 that he is shown rolling in most close-ups. The dice, game books, and other material move rather inexplicably throughout the scenes.

Think I better see this - haven't watched this show before...

I wanted to watch it, but apparently no one in England is allowed to...

Huzzah!

Yeah, I'm impressed! I watched the DnD episode, and then watched the other two previous episodes available on Hulu. When I fire up my TV I'll make sure I set my DVR to catch this series. :D

I'd never seen this show before, so was snickering pretty well as the introduction "parodied / paid homage" to the intro to the "Fellowship of the Ring" movie. I was hooked after that.

It's clear someone over at the show is a DnD fan (this link proves it). High point for me was the reference to the 1stEd Player's Handbook, as Pierce had his time with the DM (hi5 Zeugma!).

Mairkurion, I paused and checked a few times (mostly to see which books they were tossing around ... I'd love to spend some time snooping through that milk-crate Pierce had his flunky bring him! ). Books and dice were moving around a bit throughout the scenes, I was just pleased the Essentials book never was cracked ... but Abed only seemed to be scanning old-skool books as required!

I really enjoyed it...and liked how it flowed.

Have not watched it yet(wwill when I get the chance)....though very curious what edition was the books? Or is it not that obvious? I know the play style was very old schoolish...but did they have 4th ed books in front of them?

The books shown were basically all AD&D, although I understand there was at least one 4E book included.

Just one Essentials book, that was not on camera the whole time with the AD&D1 books and yep, it was never cracked. Given the way the game was played, if Abed used it at all in preparation, it was only for flavor, not for crunch.

On two shots, Abed seems to be using a d12 for his rolls....

Casts raise thread...

I just got into this show because of this episode, which you can still find on youtube (for the time being...)

All in all, this show is pretty hillarious, quickly becoming a favorite. Best quote "I won dungeons and dragons! And it was advanced!"

There's another nice homage at the beginning of the second to last episodes of season 2 :D

Community is EASILY one of the best, most clever and well written comedy shows on the air!

There are so many great geek references and homages - honestly, everyone should be watching!

Thanks, Anburaid: another great episode: loved the D&D reference at teh beginning. And it's been SO many years since I played paintball...made me want to play real bad!

I loved when Pierce said "I won Dungeons and Dragons! And it was advanced!"

That was funny on a few levels.
