Can anyone pinpoint me to a page or reference to the size a mount must be to carry a rider? Or is it legal for a Medium creature to ride another Medium creature (if the carrying capacity and Strength makes it possible)?
See the description of horse on p. 162. It isn't a direct statement, it is implied that mount needs to be one size larger or bigger.
Possibly in conflict with above, the fast mount/dismount of Ride check is only possible with a mount up to 1 size larger.
I think it's a matter of inexact language.

The core rules do not give general rules for one creature being allowed to be a mount for another creature. Instead, specific creatures are listed as suitable mounts for other specific creatures.
To my recollection, every creature listed as a mount for the Medium PC races is Large, and every creature listed as a mount for the Small PC races is Medium.
There is no explicit statement that the mount must be one size larger because there is no explicit statement giving general requirements for mounts.

Generally, I believe a mount has to be at least 1 size category larger. However, I will allow my Medium sized PCs to ride donkeys. Because donkeys are cool.
And when they were shopping and unable to find any horses for sale, making them ride donkeys irritated them to no end. The amusement I take from that is reason enough to allow it.

Interesting. So far, I can find no requirement for a mount to be one size larger than the rider. I guess this is a case of assumed carry-over from 3.5. I'm sure that the developers intended this to still be the case, but no RAW.
EDIT
See the description of horse on p. 162. It isn't a direct statement, it is implied that mount needs to be one size larger or bigger.
It does say that "a horse is suitable as a mount for a human, dwarf, elf, half-elf, or half-orc. A pony is a smaller than a horse and is a suitable mount for a gnome or halfling."
This seems to be the RAI, but is not specific enough to establish that mounts must be one size larger. I guess that is just rules-lawyering, but still no RAW.| Skull |
Interistingly enough:
Under Pony in the Bestiary:
"Ponies are smaller breeds of horses better suited to half lings, gnomes, and dwarves, but they also make fond pets for humans as well."
as the first sentence, the last sentence reads:
"Like horses, ponies can be trained for combat with the Handle Animal kill, and such mounts often serve half lings, gnomes, and other small races as steeds in combat."
Also I have seen flavour text for dwarves riding boars, which are medium as well...

If the mount is the same size as you... then the strength and space needed to carry you for long distances does not exist.
That is an interpretation as RAI not RAW. So far, there appears to be no language that indicates that a mount must be one-size (or more) larger. I hope this is just an error of omission from 3.5. Personally, I would still use the 3.5 rule in the case of my home game.

So... an enlarged character can't just wear two riding dogs like roller skates?
