I just want to go above 20th level. Is that too much to ask for in Pathfinder?


Just do it. They have advice in the book for projecting base classes past 20, but my favorite way would be to just start another class or prestige class after you reach 20 in something and you want to keep going.


There are no plans for a PF ELH at the moment, and the designers aren't keen on the idea because of how badly the math starts to break down at high levels (it's already pretty bad as you approach 20, beyond 20 it just becomes ridiculous). PF does have primitive rules for epic level play (see "Advancing Beyond 20th Level" here), just no epic feats or anything of that sort.

20 levels + 10 tiers sure seems like it's "above" 20 levels to me, though.

Just use 3.X Epic rules! They're right there! They're backwards compatible!

OR You can just expand the EXP table up to 30th Level and Use the Mythic tiers as level 21 - 30.

Finally there is ALREADY 3rd party books that does expand things: Legendary Levels.

You have PLENTY of Epic options. Paizo, however, ISN'T doing Epic rules, atleast for the foreseeable future. The Devs have explained themselves on this matter several times and their misgivings about expanding the level system seem to still be there even if they do leave the possibility open. Posting on these boards, asking "why can't we just have epic rules??", however, isn't constructive to the Mythic rules which is why we really should be here.

Here is a question. What do you want from being level 21+ that Mythic rules won't give you?

If you are looking to fight high powered fights against demon lords and demigods, Mythic allows you to do that.

If you are looking to have superpowered spells, feats, and abilities, Mythic allows you to do that.

If you are looking for bigger numbers, Mythic doesn't do that completely. Mostly because it tries to simplify the math at higher levels.

If you are just looking for having a number higher than 21 for a level, then Mythic probably isn't for you.

What is it you want?


Mythic rules don't seem very epic. mythic rules at least to me, transform you in a limited power superhero sorta like popeye, who constantly needs to recharge as opposed to a truly epic warrior like hercules.

I would much rather have abilites that are always on, it should be things like the ability to be two figther archypes simultaneouly. i find the current mythic rules almost like a neutered super hero game.


Having actually played Mythic today, I can definitely say that I had some powers that were always on and that I never felt neutered in the slightest.

EDIT: Looking back on the Path Abilities for the Champion, only Aerial Assault and Perfect Strike require you using Mythic Points. Devastating Smash, Through Shot, and Wall Smasher have additional effects if you do spend points, but they have strong abilities on their own.

Yeah I GM'd my first Mythic game today, and the PCs seemed pretty damn boss. A level 1/mythic 1 party of 4 spanked an owlbear without blinking an eye. Granted, an owlbear isn't exactly earth-shattering in its power, but still. They (the PCs) seem to be pretty beastly.

Great fun overall.


16-20 needs cleaned up a bit, first...!

You could also do a search for "Little Red Goblin Games". They put out a few Pathfinder compatible products for levels 21-30 in all standard Pathfinder classes plus a few of their own classes.

Grimmy has the best way of doing it in my opinion. You can see how the feats/ability score bonus should work as well as how XP is calculated. Just cap out on one class and get forced to move into another.

The problem is, as your bonuses to rolls overwhelm the maximum randomness of the roll, the game's math breaks down. When your looking at an expert character with a +15 to a d20 roll, versus the nonfocussed character's +2, abilities turn from "I am skilled at this" to either "Nobody else should ever both to try" or "I don't even have to roll to succeed this is so laughably easy" for the skilled character. Stuff becomes almost...binary. You can or you can't.

Some fundamental changes to the game are needed to overcome this issue in "traditional" epic rules.

3e D&D begins to breaks down at levels 15+ and goes bottoms up at Epic Level Handbook. The math goes wibbly-wobbly and eventually discombobulates into a steaming pool of absurd and paradox.

The fact that some people had fun with ELH despite of that means they're just not the ones who give that much attention to math and balance. Nothing wrong with that - as long as your group doesn't mind and everybody is happy, that's not an issue.

However, a significant portion of 3.5e player base does mind the math, and 3.5 ELH just didn't work for them. Apparently, Paizo devs noticed that and are trying to burn a path that avoids the "+144/+130/+121" silliness of the ELH.

I would only add that it is easier now that everyone has a laptop at the table with dice-rollers, but that doesn't change the fact that when you are dealing with a 20 sided die as your variable.

These rules do not preclude us from doing Epic rules in the future, although currently it is not in our schedule to do so. Thats really all there is to say on the topic at the moment, and seeing as this is the Mythic Playtest forum...
